The Batman is right around the corner, dropping in a little over 2 weeks from now on March 4th. McFarlane Toys are doing figures based on the movie and they are working their way out to retail now. Wave 1 consists of Batman, masked Catwoman and The Riddler. There are also two bikes – one for Bruce Wayne and a Batcycle for Batman proper. Wave 2+ consists of The Penguin, unmasked Catwoman, unmasked Batman, Drifter Bruce Wayne, and then a Target exclusive unmasked Drifter Bruce Wayne. We have some of this in hand today and are taking a look. Some come courtesy of McFarlane Toys (thanks!), and some we grabbed at retail. Read on to check out over 55 HD shots for Wave 1, the bikes, and Drifter Bruce plus our thoughts on it all!
DC Multiverse The Batman Action Figures & Vehicles
Overall Thoughts
Glad to have these in hand around the time of the movie, getting stuff a year+ later after media drops is no fun.
On the figure front, Batman wins, go figure. From early looks and promo shots, I wasn’t super excited for him. In hand, masked Batman is super sharp. Sculpt is well done, even the head. He’s rocking some strong SIDE EYE, which is now it’s own -gate level thing with McFarlane fans. In this particular case, it’s executed well, but that’s fig to fig, and then luck of the draw with whoever was on the side-eye paint machine at the factory that day. Personally, this would be a perfect SECOND head. Gotta have a straight-on one because this forces you into posing on shelf a certain way. Same with photography. Yes it can be cool, but it’s limiting. Right below not having full articulation in my opinion. Function trumps most everything else with modern, collector level figures. The hand situation – has one karate chop hand, and one open grip one. Can peg the grapple launch into the karate hand. Functional, but always need two closed fists per package, then whatever else. For photography I like different hands, for my shelf, always closed fists. This has zero of them. Good thing – the Batcycle comes with an extra grip hand, so at least there is that.
After Bats – the bikes. They both rock. Well done paint, functional handlebars, wheels spin, wheels are rubbery. Come with nice stands to make them not fall over on your shelf. Can even tuck a chunk of something like another gun or grapple launcher in the spokes and keep the Drifter bike up in the air, cool for posing. McFarlane has been doing these mid level vehicles for Multiverse and it works. Props for that, and these in particular.
Riddler – looks like he should based on the movie trailers and posters so far, but right now I don’t think many are super excited for that look. Will probably be great on screen, but as a toy just looks like a dude in a big coat and a weird mask. Also comes with a great gardening tool accessory so he can turn that soil over for the spring.
Catwoman – I appreciate the functionality here, but the diaper crotch kinda takes the slim line nature of the figure out. The torso is also a bit weird. Joints are tight, so getting the pose just right and keeping her standing is difficult without the included base.
Drifter Bruce – this is the version with the Covid gaiter up. The sculpt is extra bulky and puffy looking, but I think that’s based on the movie. Based on quick scenes in the trailer showing him like this – I think his Batsuit is on under it. So long as it’s based on reality, I’m ok with it. The bike helmet pops on as well to further remove the emo eye look if you don’t dig it. It’s a whole other head, doesn’t go over the Bruce head. Backpack is functional and goes on/off easily. Drifter Bike again is well done, and the two together are perfect. Just need to see the movie and decide if this look is worth keeping shelf space for. Right now, I lean no. The bike should work for any 7 inch scale figure (did not get to comparisons yet, sorry).
All in all I super dig Batman, more than I thought I would. Bikes kick ass. Other three I’m flat on. That may change after the movie hits, but the super real worldy stuff that works in gritty movies doesn’t excite me on shelf most times. Except for Batman, Batman always works.
Check our in hand shots below. I didn’t go nuts with full comparisons as they are out and about already. Check our sponsors or your local spots to pick these guys up if you dig em, they should be out now or soon.
