NECA has been releasing figures for King’s Features over the last year or so – starting with the Defenders of the Earth cartoon series versions of Flash Gordon, Ming The Merciless and The Phantom. Since then we’ve got a new set for those three in the form of Original Superheroes – which shows the character in classic looks from comics and other mediums. They’ve also released Flash and Ming in retro toy colors. Today we have yet another themed release of Flash and Ming – the 80s Movie homage set. This was announced during the summer convention season, and is set to ship to Walmart stores soon. NECA was kind enough to send through an early copy to take a look at so read on to check out our in hand shots and some quick thoughts!
Overall Thoughts:
REALLY sharp set here. These use the base molds seen in previous Defenders and Original Superheroes figures and then add on top of it. Ming gets reworked a lot with some super fancy robes, utilizing a multi cut shiny fabric over the shoulders and on the waist area making for a regal appearance. His upper crest, waist sash and neck piece are unique and really well done, inspired by the movie. While not a 100% movie accurate version – it captures the essence of the film well. Same goes with Flash – not a 100% movie accurate version but the newly painted tank top with movie themed belt sword and egg accessory stick the homage landing.
Just like the previous releases – these are fine chiseled molds which capture the “Super Hero” look well. Nothing has changed here. Coupled with NECA’s top notch paint, the figures pop on shelf. Articulation is there with ab crunches, double bows and knees, wrist swivel and rotation, and so on. All major points addressed. The paint and muscular sculpt can limit dynamic on the fly posing but you can do most of what you want to for these guys.
Accessories are purposeful and minimum – sword and egg for flash, just extra hands for Ming. One hand does have a raised ring which was a nice touch.
Bottom line – the set is a great mash up of action figure, comic, and movie vibes with a super packaging presentation. If you are a fan of the movies it’s worth a pick up for sure. Check out our shots below, and keep an eye out at Walmart in the US, they should be showing up soon!

Interested, but not holding my breath finding it for a while.
Man, Neca is really milking these Flash Gordon figures. Gotta say, though; that Ming looks pretty damn good!
