NECA has announced new variants of a few of their previously released Defenders of the Earth figures. They have taken Flash Gordon, Ming The Merciless, and The Phantom, and updated them to match their original comic strip appearances. Known as the Original Superheroes line, Series 1 is scheduled to hit stores in January. Each figure stands about 7″ tall, with about 30 points of articulation. Each includes interchangeable portraits, swap out hands, and character specific accessories. See additional details and pre-orders below. After the jump, you can see the new photos.

The Original Superheroes - Flash Gordon, Ming The Merciless, and The Phantom by NECA

I wonder if we will see public domain characters also? I have no idea what an Original Superheros kine would entail. Any guesses?
I'm hoping to see The Green Hornet, Dick Tracey, Doc Savage, Tarzan & Sheena, Zorro, The Lone Ranger, The Shadow, Buck Rogers, John Carter from Mars, all of the Robert E Howard characters... we should see Mandrake like Joe pointed out.
I was stoked about this line at first, but they lost me with their first wave of figure with terrible quality control and stuck joints. They never addressed this issue, never said whether or not it will be fixed. I’m not buying these things.
I would be in for a Phantom but seems like he already sold out!
Didn't know he was so popular.
Didn't know he was so popular.
I didn't get the 1st release because he wasn't wearing the diagonal striped blue/black speedos
Quality control issues on this Flash Gordon got me second guessing my preorder. The arm breakage occurs at 8:47 of this review.

NECA might as well be toothpicks for pegs. horrendous how easily these figures break.
I just heat up all my figures first and work the joints. Especially with it being Winter at the moment. You got more play during a hot summer.
It would be nice if they designed a better joint or used better plastic. But a material that can expand and contract more with temps is going be and toss up at times.
Not that it excuses a breakage like that in the video.
Only had one Neca figure break on me but it was a helluva break, the quarter scale Hulk. It was standing on a carpeted floor and fell over (which is a whole seperate issue with their 1/4 figures but anyway) and the forearm completely and cleanly broke off. So yeah, the most gentlest of falls completely destroys an almost $300 figure.
