Mattel Creations is reviving the Street Sharks brand for three figures based on characters who never saw release. Street Sharks was an animated series that aired in the mid-90’s as well as a toy line from Mattel. On August 27th at 9:00 AM PST (Noon EST), Mattel Creations will be offering Ripster, Karkass, and Clambo. These characters are designed to fit in with the original Street sharks toy line. Check out some details below.
The Heroes That Could’ve Been
Before they became our favorite animated man-sharks from the ’90s, the Street Sharks started as sketches. Some of the sketches eventually morphed into the toothy crime fighters we know and love, and some never saw the light of day. Until now. Our designers dug through the archives to give three original concepts of Clambo, Karkass, and Ripster their time in the water. And the result is fin-tastic!Ripster
Our lead shark, originally imagined as the lead jock and named “Ripley”, wears cleats, a helmet, and sunglasses. His weapon of choice? A football missile perfect for jawesome power passes.Karkass
Long before he became “piranhoid,” Karkass had evil in his gills. Featuring a piranha’s toothy grin and removable fish fists, this nemesis is casually dressed in sneakers and a track jacket.Clambo
This half-man, half-mollusk is armed to the teeth and all villain. He features a camo shell, multiple blasters, and a biting sneer.
The figures will be priced at $75 each. You can keep an eye on the Mattel Creation Street Sharks Page to get your pre-orders in on Friday. Check out some photos after the jump.
Street Sharks - The Heroes That Could Have Been by Mattel Creations

Uhhh, I think Mattel's efforts, aesthetically speaking, are hitting a little askew of the mark on these. The anthropomorphic presentation of the originals was more satisfying in my memory. The originals were significantly more hulking with a subdued color palette that felt less pastel-ish. Not terrible, but also not what I was hoping for when announced. Go big, or go home.
...and when I say 'big', I don't mean scale. I mean proportionality; oversized heads, shoulders and arms that create the dramatically inverted visual of a triangle of teeth and muscles.
...and the price.
Apparently these are based on early concept designs hence why they look so different than we're normally used to for Street Sharks. Really odd choice though, and pricy too for what they are.
So characters no one wants at a price best described as highway robbery? I almost wonder if Mattel takes insurance policies out on their toylines and collects big when they "fail".... (Yes, I know that's ridiculous.... Right?)
Odd character choices. And that price. Ouch. Not that I was really all that invested, but now this seems like an absolute no for me.
Dumb move on Mattel's part. $75 each these will mostly only appeal to the diehard fans of a relatively lesser known 90's toy line.
Smarter move, maybe a small wave compatible with MOTU Origins.
This should be a MOTU Origins style line. They're sharks, kids love sharks.
Unless you're a big fan and somehow can afford the crazy aftermarket prices for the OGs, I can't see these doing well.
Which I guess is why Mattel is trying to rob people at $75 each.
I never had the toys but I remember them and yeah I was like what are these designs? They looked nothing like what I remember and I guess I'm not alone in that. Really weird choice.
Street Sharks toys to a cartoon series that never even completed it's run. I Liked the cartoon series. I got the dvd set. But why the come back? Is there a reboot coming?
My dream of owning fully articulated "Extreme Dinosaurs" one day is dying a little death every time something stupid like this happens. Concept chatacters for 75 bucks a pop, Jesus.
Seriously, you have MOTU Origins, don't you? Just do that with your 90's brands. I know He-Man is a much bigger name but it can't be this difficult. Just sell them under the MOTU Origins banner if you have to. I'm sure talking humanoid sharks and dinosaurs aren't that bad of a fit for the battlefields of Eternia.
I think there's a reason these concepts never saw the light of day. Sorry to anyone who worked on this. The clam guy is ok, but the other two are pretty horrendous.
I was never into these as a kid but I do like them. They are priced high, but everything is now with hyper inflation taking hold. These will sell-out in minutes, just like those damn beetlejuice dolls I tried for.
Had a few Street Sharks as a kid. Cool they’re throwing it back for the people that collect them. Don’t love the designs, but they’ll get some of the completist attention.
Things Mattel could do
What Mattel did: Gave us expensive crap nobody asked for.
I’m really gonna try for Clambo, a cool oddity you don’t see often these days.
