Spawn gallery drop today for some recent single releases before the new Spawn’s Universe themed line drops later in the year. Inside we have looks at the Mortal Kombat 11 12 inch Commando Spawn, the MK 11 7 Inch Curse of the Apocalypse Spawn (black and yellow), the retail release of Mandarin Spawn, and the Deluxe Mandarin Spawn that was exclusive to Gamestop and just shipped.
We’ve run each for a set of basic and fancy shots, so read on to check them out along with some additional thoughts. Some of these come courtesy of McFarlane Toys (thanks!) and some I picked up myself. All of these should be available now at various retailers so hit your spots to pick them up!
Overall Thoughts:
12 Inch Commando Spawn – Awesome, but basically a statue. This is my favorite look from the MK11 game, and it could really work in the comicverse as well. The sculpting is great, paint is great. But, basically no articulation. That’s fine, I’m ok with that at this scale, it’s a centerpiece or something to fill in the back of a shelf. That being said, I REALLY want this in 7 inch scale with a LOT of guns.
Curse of the Apocalypse 7 Inch Spawn – So this is the 4th drop of this mold, first in new colors. There is also a 5th coming. I was super happy when the first dropped, our first new articulated Spawn in modern times. However, it’s time to move on. Or, do the whole line up :) As you can see below in the pics, I had fun teaming him up accordingly.
7 Inch Mandarin Spawn – I dig it. Much better than the Gold Label blue release. Of course colors are better, but it also has altered sculpting to better match the original and artwork. Even though there is a deluxe version – the paint on this is really good and close to what I’d expect in the Deluxe offering. A worthy modern upgrade when you factor in articulation.
7 Inch Deluxe Mandarin Spawn – Also good, but there are molding changes again here. New head, no spike on shoulder, new waist sash, additional arm armor on one side. Overall the gold is more dominant than the red. He does come with all the weapons that were split across the other 2 releases plus the double sided sword and shield from the original. So getting this one, and putting the weapons with the retail release above will give you a pretty close modern version of the original. That being said, I like that each new one so far is slightly different in colors and sculpting and weaponry. The artwork included in box was well done – no folding on firm card stock. I wouldn’t mind more of those.
Bottom line – there is some good Spawn stuff out now, and more coming later in the year. Can’t wait!
