Time for another round of McFarlane Toys DC Multiverse galleries! We have a chunk here, and some more incoming this week. To kick things off let’s take a look at recent releases that all have one thing in common – being a repaint or a retool of a previous figure. McFarlane Toys has been doing that a lot lately. Instead of blasting the market with an overprint of a mold that then clogs shelves, we’ve been getting smaller runs with multiple re-uses after the fact. Aside from wave 1 stuff early on of course. All of today’s figures fall in that category:
• Batman Hellbat – Gold Variant
• Red Death Batman – Gold Label Edition
• Joker Nightwing
• Last Knight on Earth Wonder Woman – w/ Dr. Fate Helmet
• Flashpoint Thomas Wayne Batman – Unmasked
• Batman by Todd McFarlane – Blue Deco
• White Knight Batman – Red Variant
Some of these are variants to taste, others are more significant and represent the character on page. All of these are out now, or will be soon so hit your preferred retailers to pick up your copies. We will have more McFarlane DC Multiverse galleries soon (check out our previous sets here).
Read on for some additional thoughts and over 100 HD images, courtesy of McFarlane Toys!
Overall Thoughts:
Gold Hellbat – I really like this design. While the gold wasn’t on any list of “I Need That” before, now that it’s here I want them in 100 colors so I can build a Hellbat army.
Gold Red Death Batman – I get the Gold Label thing, that’s a sub-theme you could shoot for across all McFarlane brands. I think doing the Dark Knights in an all Black with maybe a wash would have been better than gold. At the end you could have a cool creepy variant nook. Update: Thanks to En Sabah Nerd on the forums, he reminded me that this was actually in the books too, when Barry kinda woke up within the body.
Joker Nightwing – Technically this is a full release based on books, he went through a thing after the Death of the Family arc. This is a wave 1 body, so it doesn’t have the refinement they’ve done over the last year or so. The head sculpt is sharp though, and should be fine standing on a shelf mixed in with others.
Last Knight on Earth Wonder Woman w/ Dr. Fate Helmet – Ok, this was a quick frame in the books. But cool, showed that some things are definitely different in that story and things got real. I’m happy with that figure overall, I think it’s a boss alt take on Wonder Woman. This helmet really should have just been packed in with the main release tho as an alt head.
Flashpoint Thomas Wayne Batman – Unmasked – Kinda the same thing. Well done figure. This alt head and sword again would have made the original release better. But we get back to – short runs, no clogs, retailers happy with exclusives. Business. Fan in me says – one release, come on. But, do what you gotta McFarlane. :)
Batman by Todd McFarlane – Blue Deco – So this is technically the mass release of this figure, even though the variant dropped first. Aside from the colors, he also gets 2 different blades and a Batarang here. It’s a unique design, done by Todd McFarlane. I dig it, but it works much better in harsh moody lighting. The head sculpt is not my favorite, a head swap with the Flashpoint masked Batman works well if you have some paint skills.
White Knight Batman – Red Variant – Target exclusive, straight repaint. The colors kinda match the tone of some covers from The White Knight stories. And it’s red, so Target liked that. The original release was one of my favorites from Year 1 of McFarlane DC Multiverse. Physically it’s the same, but I don’t need the red out on display personally.
Bottom line – all these with exception of Joker Robin are there for collectors to pick up based on their personal taste. If you focus on a character, or a story arc, or missed the first version, and these fit – can jump in. But if you are just building core looks and rosters – most collectors can skip. They are all executed well for what they are with paint, engineering and the like. Just about what you dig.

And, been waiting on this since they confirmed the team completion.

May look simpleish, but that's actual about 15 different shots each with own lighting and edits, merged together and tweaked from there. It wasn't a pure composite tho, as I did set all that up just like that (still set up like that on my shoot table actually).

At first I thought that was a painting. Lord, that’s a hell of a pic. Awesome job.
I can’t wait to finish the team. I’ve seen her a few times in target, but not the whole wave she’s in so I’ll just keep my BBTS preorder for now. I have given up on mor than one crow robin. I’ve never seen him in store, and I’m not taking the chance on getting doubles at $25 a figure.
Negative not a dash.
It's Earth Negative 11.
Not Earth 11.
Please fix.
They should hire you to take the official promo shots for all DC Multiverse figures.

If their photographer retires, and they offer enough to warrant me and my wife moving and leaving current jobs, I'll listen
Until then I'll just do them for Toyark.

Sigh. Makes me wish Todd would make a legit Mera figure.
Always such a tease, I really hope he wasn't lying about making characters
other than just batpeople...

Last Knight on Earth wave is up:

The Joker's head is very realistic and kind or gory, but its cool. I'm glad we have these guys. Some Future State stuff would be cool.
I feel like if Scarecrow and Bane were sold as a two pack I'd get it but that's not the case and then I'm not interested enough in the whole wave to get it all at full price.
Wonder if the Wonder Woman 84 head fits on that Wonder Woman body? Not a fan of that head, especially because of the stubble.
100% feel you on that one, I keep waiting on the Dr.Fate variant, but no word on that yet, so I pulled the trigger on one of these for now, the body is great. Really curious how the rumored Todd-designed WW figure will look. Hopefully not too spiky or Spawn-esque
Damn, I wish that Batman costume showed up more in the comic. It's really cool looking.
So it was technically not really lying, but thanks to this photo shoot I went ahead and actually read the book and then went over to Dorkside to pre-order the wave. The figures already looked great but after being able to give them some proper context I actually want to get them.

Same here. I guess it works. I haven’t bought a graphic novel in 15 years. Now I’m up to 5....since mcfarlane took the reins.
