ThreeZero has ramped it up of late with new licenses, product types and themes. They’re doing 1/6th scale, large Premium and smaller DLX figures for Transformers, branching the DLX line out into high end human figures, new offerings for G.I. Joe, Power Rangers, Marvel and more. One of those sub lines is Robo-Dou which features DLX style figures based on Japanese Mecha. Small form, high quality. They are about 9-10 inches tall, die cast frame, tons of paint, and very faithful to the source material. The first two were based on Patlabor, another giant mecha anime from Japan that didn’t quite penetrate international markets but are revered by those that are into them. We took a look at those here and here.
Next up is Evangelion. Even if you have never watched an episode, if you are into big robots you’ve probably seen the main star of the show floating around over the years – EVA Unit 01. EVA mechs are human piloted robots* that are skinny and lanky, dispatched by humanity to fight randomly appearing giant monsters. After digging into the anime recently (on Netflix in full with a new dub) I realized Pacific Rim borrowed a LOT of themes from this show. EVA 01 is the purple and green mech that is most seen, and is the one we are looking at today.

Overall thoughts:
First impressions – NICE. Feels great in hand. Right out of the tray you immediately feel that cold die cast metal. It’s heavy, but still has range. Joints flow smooth with no ratcheting. They hold their position well, allowing for the heavy metal to stand firm. Paint is bright and colorful, just like the show. Sculpt is fine, down to the details in the teeth, fingers. He has multiple hands, 2 heads, back opens for the cockpit rods to slide in. The power cord is present, you can dangle it off the removable plug in the back. There is also a second removable plug which acts as the connector to the display stand, and the cord plugs into that too, well done.
The range of articulation is impressive, the lanky frame it’s known for can achieve most of those weird crouching poses you want to put him in. Arms tend to pop out when going for extreme posing, but pop right back in with no problem. The mouth opens and shuts, while a second Awakened mode head is static. Weapons are standard fare for EVA 01 – rifle and Progressive Knife. The knife has a second shoulder piece which shows it coming out, and then a stand alone Progressive knife in knife form.
All in all it’s a well executed piece. I had a blast running him through pics in all his crazy poses. And it feels quality, which is important. It’s not just another offering to the many EVA figures out there, it’s a centerpiece. If you were going to do one, but don’t have Prime 1 statue money – this is it.
Check out our shots below, and keep an eye out for the second Evangelion figure – Production Model 02 soon!
