Today we have a look at the soon to be released Toony Terrors 6″ Scale Figures Wave 4 Figures from NECA Toys. This wave introduces four new figures to the line up. Those include Victory Crowly from Hatchet, Sam from Trick ‘r Treat, Regan from The Exorcist, and Beetlejuice. The Toony Terrors line takes horror icons and re-imagines them in the style of classic cartoons from the 70’s and 80’s. This wave is scheduled to ship to retailers at the end of November, and should hit shelves by mid December. If you missed it, you can check out my galleries for Toony Terrors Wave 1, Toony Terrors Wave 2, and Toony Terrors Wave 3.
Our friends at NECA have sent over the fourth series to check out. After the jump, you can see my full photo gallery and impressions of the latest releases.
Toony Terrors Wave 4 by NECA Toys
Pros
- Four new characters with solid new sculpts
- Nice paint work
- Interchangeable portraits for Sam and Regan are a nice addition
- Packaging works perfectly for carded display
- Diorama backdrop included with each figure
Cons
- Sam is a little hard to stand without the burlap sack
Overall
Each figure is packed on a card back the features a movie theater entrance and marquee on the front, featuring well hidden movie posters for each film. The back has a simple backdrop specific to each character. These are meant to be cut out and used in your display. The packaging style is consistent with Waves 1 through 3. Victor Crowley includes an axe. Sam includes masked and unmasked portraits, a lollipop, and a burlap sack. Regan has two swap out portraits and a vomit effect. Beetlejuice doesn’t include any accessories.
I’ve been really enjoying the Toony Terrors releases so far. They’re a great way to introduce characters that they may not be able to do in other formats, as a fairly low cost alternative to the Ultimates and Retro clothed figures. The stylized cartoon aesthetic gives a nice cohesive look across the entire line. This wave brings a nice mix of classic and modern characters, and should offer something for most horror fans. Sculpts are great for what they are, and the character selection translates fairly well to the Scooby-Doo style. For all of NECA’s animated style releases, they are focusing more on sculpt than articulation. The figures feature basic shoulder articulation, and ball jointed necks, with a few having wrists that can rotate.
Beetlejuice was my most anticipated of the wave, and he looks great. He doesn’t have any accessories, but I don’t think he really needed any. His head sculpt is excellent as well. Some fans were surprised that he wasn’t in the style of his late 80’s cartoon. But I feel like that could make up a separate Toony Classics release, much like Bill and Ted, Ace Venture, and Back to the Future. Regan was a great surprise addition when the wave was announced, and is easily the creepiest of this round of figures. Her portraits may be a bit more realistic compared to the cartoonish previous releases like Ash and Freddy, but they’re both excellently done. The green vomit accessory is a fun gross out accessory that attaches to the second head sculpt. Sam is probably the best figure in the wave. The small size, and more exaggerated proportions work so well here. Both head sculpts are fantastic, and looks great displayed either way. He is a bit hard to stand without angling the burlap sack just right. Victor Crowley is the most modern character to get a Toony Terror figure. The figure looks appropriately disgusting, and NECA did a nice job of bringing the deformed killer to the Toony line. The head sculpt here, like Regan, is a little more on the realistic side, which probably can’t be helped do to the amount of detail they needed to translate.
This is another fun wave, and one that brought some great variety to the line. It’s also always great to see four unique characters in the line. If you’re a fan of the style, then it’s really easy to recommend just about any figure in the line. Wave 4 is no exception, and characters like Beetlejuice make up one of my personal biggest requests. Check out a selection of images below, and the full gallery after that.
