Our friends at Diamond Select Toys have sent over three Star Wars Statues to check out. These statues were produced by Gentle Giant, and are currently available from the Gentle Giant Store. I’ve combined these into one big Star Wars themed gallery. Include are the following statues:
- Solo: A Star Wars Story – Chewbacca Milestones 1/6 Scale Statue
- Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back – Darth Vader Collectors Gallery 1/8 Scale Statue
- Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back – Dengar Collectors Gallery 1/8 Scale Statue
After the jump, you can see a full gallery of the statues, and some quick thoughts on each one.
Solo: A Star Wars Story – Chewbacca Milestones 1/6 Scale Statue
- Excellent sculpt, especially the flowing hair
- Very solid construction
- Great paint work
- Easy to assemble
- I do wish the goggles were removable
Chewy is a great looking statue in-hand. Standing about 14″ tall, the statue is very solid feeling, with some heavy weight to it. The Chewbacca statue includes a large mirror top base. Chewy has large pegs on his feet that fit snugly in a pair of holes on the base top. Sculpt work is excellent, with some nice looking wind blown fur. The portrait looks pretty spot on as well. Paint work is handled well, with some nice transitional paint between the darker and lighter colors of his fur. Painted details on his bandolier and weapon are clean and sharp. Details, such as the eyes have crisp lines, with no noticeable paint bleed. I would have liked to be able to remove the goggles, for a more classic Chewbacca look. But it’s a great looking piece overall.
Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back – Darth Vader Collectors Gallery 1/8 Scale Statue
- Solid looking sculpt
- Nice Dagobah themed base
- Sharp paint work with matte and reflective paint used
- Great reflective coating on the helmet
- A light up Lightsaber blade would be welcome
From Luke’s Dark Side encounter on Dagobah comes this great looking Darth Vader statue. Darth Vader stands roughly 11″ tall. The statue base is themed after the cave on Dagobah, with creatures crawling by his feet. The Lightsaber hilt has a translucent plastic blade that attaches to it. The mostly black painted figure has a mix of matte finish paint (such as the cape) and sharp reflective coated areas (like the helmet). There are some silver pieces painted on, and the lights on his chest are bright blues and reds. I was really impressed with how reflective the helmet is, and it has light paint flecks in it to break up the solid black a bit. It’s sized perfectly to fit in a tight display. If the Lightsaber had lit up, it would really have put this statue over the top. As is, it’s a good looking statue, that just needs an Empire Strikes Back Luke to go with it.
Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back – Dengar Collectors Gallery 1/8 Scale Statue
- Excellent sculpt work
- Great paint application
- The seated pose is a nice change of pace
- Magnet used for some easy assembly
Of the three statues, I was surprised that the Dengar wound up being my favorite of the three. I have no real attachment to the character, as I never followed his expanded universe stories. The statue has Dengar seated on a crate, his Valken-38 carbine rifle resting in his right hand. I appreciate that Dengar isn’t simply in the “Captain Morgan” pose that seems to dominate a lot of statue releases these days. It will add some variety to the display if you collect the additional Bounty Hunters in this scale. I was impressed with the texture work here, as Dengar features a varied costume. The sculpted fabric on the head has very natural looking folds, while the sharper bronze armor is slick and smooth. His face is heavily wrinkled and weathered, and the portrait likeness looks accurate for the short time you see him in Empire. Dengar has a lot of paint washes and dry brushing here, which add some extra depth to the sculpt work. Areas such as the eyes, and separations in the armor all have sharp paint lines as well. This is just a really nice looking Star Wars statue that will look great next to Zuckuss and IG-88, who are also available now.
