McFarlane Toys have dropped the first wave of Dark Nights Metal figures this month with the release of Dawnbreaker, Devastator, Murder Machine and the Grim Knight. All of these are dark universe alternate Earth versions of Bruce Wayne / Batman – ones who made the evil choice at a key moment and turned his bat training and skill down a dark path. The Batman Who Laughs is a mix of Joker and Batman from one of those Earths. He has rounded them up and brought them into the main DC reality. And here we are.
McFarlane’s DC Multiverse figures have improved with each round so far in my opinion, and this wave is no different. It is again, the best yet. Every piece looks straight out of the comics, has paint head to toe, and all of them have a full range of articulation with no short cuts. They do everything you need physically, and they look fantastic. In addition, the other angle one has with sub themes being done – complete the team. Well, that’s pretty much all done because between these and the future pre-orders – almost all DNM key players are coming.
Bottom line – wave is FIRE. We’ve run all 4 through a set so read on to check out over 100 HD images of them, courtesy of McFarlane Toys. They should be hitting stores now!
Dark Nights Metal Wave 1 – Additional Thoughts
As I said above – best McFarlane DC wave yet. When I envisioned McFarlane doing DC before these came out, these are what I was hoping for. Great sculpts, paint for days, and finally we are in the modern era of articulation. Only a couple nitpicks – Devastator has single joint elbows and knees- but due to his massive size that is acceptable. Still a great range for such a dense figure. Does have good wrist and hand movement, and even some articulated feet cuts which is nice. Grim Knight – I have a feeling he’s gonna be getting a lot of play on IG. Only nitpick there – backpack guns are one piece. It does match the artwork perfectly like that – but it would be nice to get a deluxe edition with like 100 guns at some point.
Again – well done wave and excited for where this line is going. We do need to get off the Batman train though, even for a little bit. Fill the universe out with modern comic versions of other DC characters. The Batman White Knight and Dark Nights figures are exactly what I am looking for – and I’d love that modern comic style applied to non Batman universe characters.

DC Multiverse Dark Nights Metal Wave 1 In Hand – Devastator, Dawnbreaker, Grim Knight and Murder Machine

Round 1 is up!
Amazing pics, thanks!
Are these Walmart exclusives? I have them all preordered through them.
McFarlane's Instagram posted a pic of the Batcycle from this line and it looks amazing.
Great work as always Tony. Only thing to say is I didn't like some detail or design choices on some of the figures (like that Dawnbreaker) but that effect piece looked real good. I wish for future figures and for other characters there are a few more added effect pieces (2-3), just figured its a decision based on cost, but the company shows they can do detailed accessories.
I hear ya. I would bet all the extra cost went into the pure raw plastic weight of that Devastator. It's not massively taller than the rest, but it is wide and dense. You can feel it in package immediately.
The press info does state that they are at Walmart and Amazon online in September, in Walmart in October, and worldwide / national retailers in November.
From what I understand, McFarlane has been doing pre-orders that are exclusive to Walmart and Amazon, but will be general releases. So other places can list them once they have them in stock.
I've said it before and I'll say it again... That Devastator looks amazing, but very, very short. That shoulda been the BAF instead of Merciless. All of them looking great, though!
If I ever see that Grim Batman, I'll get it just to give Frank all his weapons & weapons backpack.
Nice Wave 1
These are up for preorder now on bbts.
