NECA is going to be unveiling, what was to be, their San Diego Comic-Con 2020 Exclusives soon. The first one leaked via Walmart today, so I have received permission to share my advanced gallery with you all! The first of their exclusives is a Gremlin inspired by a classic movie advertisement. The Unofficial Summer Games Gremlin features Stripe with an Olympic Torch and swimming gear. The swimming gear includes goggles with a snorkeling tube, swim trunks, and a pair of flippers. Like I said, this leaked out at a Walmart store a bit early. However, fans worldwide will have a shot at owning one of these figures, even if you can’t make it to a Walmart store. Here’s the official release info direct from NECA:
Release Date – July 23, 2020
Available in Walmart Stores on Thursday(7/23) – $29.96 USD
Available online (US & International) through TheNecaStore.com on Thursday(7/23) – $34.99 USD
Note: Some stores may have inventory ahead of scheduled date
Our friends at NECA were kind enough to send us an early sample of the figure. After the jump, you can see my photo gallery of the new Summer Games Gremlin.
San Diego Comic-Con 2020 Exclusive – Unofficial Summer Games Gremlin Ultimate 7″ Scale Figure by NECA
Pros
- Great reuse of the Ultimate Stripe
- Torch accessory is awesome
- Fabric swim trunks work well
- Flippers attach easily and add stability
- Solid articulation
- Excellent paint apps
Cons
- Goggles and snorkel can be tough to position correctly
Overall
The Summer Games Gremlin is packed in a flapped window box. The front features art inspired by the original newspaper advertisement for Gremlins in the theater (see the advertisement in the gallery below). The Gremlin includes goggles, a removable snorkel attachment, flippers, fabric swim trunks, and an Olympic Torch.
The Stripe figure is pretty much identical to the Ultimate Stripe Figure released back in January 2019. The sculpt is outstanding, with great paint apps. The hair is synthetic, and the figure has about 25 points of articulation. The joints were all pretty solid, with a nice range of motion. nothing felt overly loose, and the knees and ankles were tighter than on my original Stripe. Outside of being an exclusive, the draw here are the fun accessories. The swim trunks are a faux leather, that use velcro and can be easily removed. The snorkel attaches to the goggle via a peg, though I wish the hole on the snorkel was just a tad higher up. It doesn’t attach to Stripe via a peg or anything, and you have to balance it on his head. However, you can have him wear it like a regular pair of swimming goggles without much trouble. The Olyympic Torch is my favorite of the new accessories. The flame can swivel and it has a nice weight to it. The flame itself is just slightly translucent, and really pops when you have a good light source hitting it. The torch is held in Stripe’s left hand, and the grip is fairly tight.
This is a fun kick off to NECA’s Summer 2020 Exclusives. The accessories all work well, and it’s a great nod to the original Gremlins marketing campaign. Check out a selection of images below, and the full gallery after that.

NECA with partnership with Walmart is such a bad idea. Still not finding Turtles. NECA had it on their website for order but every time I tried would state incorrect shipping. NECA informed me it was for international customers only. No where did it state that and everything on there except 2 items is for international customers. Walmart must have their balls if they are unable to sell to US customers on their own site. Kiss these exclusives goodbye. Walmart has a hard time with these especially if its a specialty item. Or it comes out 6 months to a year later then on to clearance which has been their mo.
Fun and wacky and different, and the type of thing an exclusive should be. Pretty cool!
This is not going to be the case for the Gremlin. that will be available to everyone via their online store.
Good way to get Stripe if you missed him- for me it would just be $30 for some accessories you can probably find in the walmart doll aisle.
Meh.
A (cancelled) SDCC exclusive with a theme of the (cancelled) 2020 Olympics. Man NECA caught a double whammy there. Down the road this will be a perfect representation of this shitty year.
Yawn.
Shouldn’t stripe be screaming and recoiling from the bright light of the torch? Seems a bit odd. Oh well.nice accessories for accessory collectors, but not a very attractive offering, imho. With all the options available from the movies, I’m surprised Neca made something up.
Those newspaper ads are pretty cool. And from a time when movies played in theaters seemingly forever. From the looks of the ads, it looks like Gremlins was still being played into '85. Fast forward to modern times, Ragnarok came out in November and was out of the theaters by the time Last Jedi came out a month later.
