Spawn Remastered Kickstarter 001

McFarlane Toys has released an update ahead of their Kickstarter Campaign going live. They are looking to crowdfund a fully remastered version of the original Spawn action figure, along with a completely redrawn Spawn #1 by Todd McFarlane. The details have confirmed this will be an articulated 7″ scale action figure. They specifically mention it will be “more than double what the original toy had”. The figure will include four interchangeable portraits, a gun, and a club. There will be three versions available. Those include a Classic Costume Version, a Modern Costume Version, and an Artist Proof Black and White Version. You will also be able to back a 3-Pack featuring all three versions. The packaging will be a collector friendly resealable shell box.

The figures are priced at $50 $40 each, with a special $85 $80 version including an autographed Todd McFarlane placard. The campaign begins at some point today. Keep an eye on the official The Original SPAWN Action Figure & Comic Remastered (2020) Kickstarter Page for when the campaign goes live. If any additional info is launched with the campaign, we’ll add it to this post. Check out full details and some photos and 3D renders after the jump.

UPDATE 1:
The Kickstarter is now live! We can confirm the figure will be very articulated, with over 20 points of articulation. The campaign needs $100,000 in pledges to movie forward. As of this writing, it’s already over $40,000. Click the link above for the Kickstarter, and see new images after the jump.

UPDATE 2:
Fully funded!

UPDATE 3 (April 10th):
Todd McFarlane has updated the Kickstarter with additional details, and further clarification. Each figure will now include interchangeable hands. The 3-Pack of figures will now include all available heads. Stretch Goals will be coming in the near future as well. Check out the full update, with video, on the Spawn Kickstarter Update Page.

UPDATE 4 (April 12th):
A new update has been posted. As the campaign has exceeded $1.2 Million, each figure is being upgraded to include metal chains instead of rubber ones.

UPDATE 5 (April 14th):
A new update has been posted. As the campaign has exceeded $1.4 Million, the Three Pack level will be getting 3 different new weapons, PLUS each include the standard original weapon.

UPDATE 6 (April 16th):
A new update has been posted. As the campaign has exceeded $1.5 Million, the Three Pack level will be getting another new head – 6 in total.  In addition – each single figure will now come packed with 2 heads.  CLASSIC SPAWN – Will come with MASKED head & painted SCREAMING head. MODERN SPAWN – Comes with SHOELACE head & Al Simmons HUMAN head. ARTIST PROOF SPAWN – Comes with unpainted MASKED head & unpainted SCREAMING head.

UPDATE 7 (April 19th):
A new update has been posted. When the campaign has exceeded $1.7 Million (at 1.6+ now), 2 new sculpted items will be automatically added to Modern Spawn depending on the way you purchase him. All copies of Modern Spawn will come with the spiked boot, regardless of whether the purchase was single or in the 3 pack. As an extra bonus for the 3-pack purchasers – Modern Spawn will also come with the arm gauntlet. They have also confirmed details on purchasing more than one is coming in the next update.

UPDATE 8 (April 21st):
A new update has been posted. No new items this round, but 3d models of the weapons were shown including the Launcher, Necro Sword, and Wooden Spiked Hook.

UPDATE 9 (April 22nd): (GOOD ONE)
A new update has been posted. Prototypes from the factory are in hand. They show the figure’s articulation, heads and weapons. The awesome thing here – two articulation points fans have been asking for (including me) have been addressed. The ab crunch – no cut – but they are testing the torso being soft with a bend joint underneath. IMO that would be perfection. The second is bicep cut – not present, but he said it will be on the next test shot. So ab crunch and bicep cuts will most likely be present in final, which is great. There are also hands which go with the specific weapons in the video. Hit the link to check it out!

UPDATE 10 (April 25th):
A new update has been posted. The project has passed the 2 Million dollar mark! The team has updated with multiple new upgrades. All figures will now come with a steel chain for the NECK/CAPE area (in addition to belt area). All figures will now come with an extra pair of FIST hands. All figures will now come with one transparent NECRO-ENERGY Attachment. All Trilogy 3 Packs will come with 3 different NECRO-ENERGY Attachments. All Trilogy 3 Packs will come with a GOLD PLAQUE and GOLD SIGNATURE.

UPDATE 11 (April 27th):
A new update has been posted. No new features from hitting a milestone, but a video showing the functionality of the articulation in the cape is live. It’s working very similar to the original cape, with it flapping open and around the figure. The cape is huge, and very faithful to the original toy. However, for those looking to get some really dynamic posing going, or any pose where he isn’t at near full height, a custom solution will be needed. Hopefully our friends at CJESIM can be ready to go so they’re available in November when it ships!

UPDATE 12 (May 5th):
A new update has been posted. The project has passed the 2.5 million dollar mark. McFarlane Toys have decided to give everyone who ordered a Classic Spawn, via any pledge level, a PAINTED Necro Sword. Up until now, this was only going to be available in the black and white Artist Proof version.

While the stretch goals are not formal and laid out like traditional Kickstarters, the McFarlane team is listening and interacting with the fans via comments on the campaign and adding in features being suggested at key milestones in pledging. A lot of what folks asked for has been done so far. The offerings are more polished and well rounded from where it started. We suggest you sound off in the comments on what you want, even if already said by someone else, and of course, support it with a pledge if you dig it!

There are currently 2.5 ish days to go. If you are thinking about jumping in, now is the time!

SPAWN MASTERWORKS – The ORIGINAL Comic & Toy Re-Mastered

Description:

In 1992 the very first Spawn comic book hit the shelves setting a sales record for an independent. A few years later in 1995, the first Spawn action figure was released to critical acclaim and helped usher in a whole new way of giving you detail and ‘art’ to your action figures.

Now, twenty-five years later, Todd MacFarlane is joining forces with Kickstarter to help deliver an updated version of that original 1995 toy & comic release. This figure will be 7 inches tall and come with a huge folding cape and weapon. The articulation in this version will be more than double what the original toy had, and the included comic will be re-drawn by the international award-winning artist and creator of the Spawn character, Todd McFarlane.

As well, this new remastered version will come in its own box with slipcover to help preserve the condition of the figure, comic and packaging. And speaking of the actual blister packaging, it will mimic the original design from the classic toy of 1995, though upgrades will be all across the final product.

A new resealable shell will be used so that you may take out you figure and comic for display, but also be able to return them both into their packaging like you have never opened it in the first place!

Finally, if you choose, you can get an autograph by Todd McFarlane himself. Todd will be personally signing a name plate that can be used for display with your comic and toy. And each autographed item will also come with a bonus weapon: A reimagining of the wooden plank weapon from that original Spawn figure from 1995.

To simplify this offering, there will be only four levels: A CLASSIC costume version. A MODERN costume version (with new head), an ARTIST PROOF (what we’re calling the ‘black & white) and lastly the 3-PAK bundle which will include a Classic, Modern and Black & White figure. The latter two figure getting new head sculpts!)

The first three levels will be offered with or without an autograph while the 3-Pak will only be offered with an autograph. And each of the single figures will have a NEW never seen before covers drawn by Todd McFarlane himself.

This is your chance to get in on history as it repeats itself in this remastered version of the character and toy that helped changed the industry of action figures itself.

Figure Price:

$50 $40 for articulated Spawn figure, weapon, and premium box

$85 $80 for Todd McFarlane signed placard, Spawn articulated figure, weapon, and premium box

Fulfillment:

Shipping in the Continental U.S. will be FREE. *This info was removed from the website.

This Kickstarter offering is accepting international orders. Additional shipping will be added to total depending on where a customer’s international destination is located.

The comic is still running, somewhere in the 300s I think. Spawn as a character has managed to maintain a fanbase regardless of the quality of his source material, when they added him to MK11 the reaction was mostly enthusiastic and not "who is this?" so I guess that counts as some degree of evidence to his enduring popularity.

I'm interested in this for sure, I really just want an updated 1/6th scale Spawn. I have the Medicom version from way back but a new one would be awesome; on a basic level I have a problem with established companies making Kickstarters.

In this case I don't fully understand why they need to do this since he has an established company that HAS been producing Spawn/Image/Misc figures for decades. I don't mind a pre-order based fulfillment but I don't know that I could support this.

Apparently the issue is that retailers don't want to stock new Spawn toys unless they're connected to MK, so he's trying to sell these directly to fans.

One of the reasons he is doing a campaign is because big retailers are hesitant about one offs or small series. I think he is just using Spawn as a test, since it's his most well-known property. He also wants to bring back Movie Maniacs, Tortured Souls, Twisted Fairy Tales, etc., but just as smaller continuations. One or two figures at a time. Some of these have no real source material and no tie-ins, so Wal-Mart, Target, etc. wouldn't carry them.

That being said, I'm not sure why he is using the Kickstarter platform, instead of just putting up preorders on his site, like HasLab, and avoiding campaign fees. The only thing I can think of is that Kickstarter does have a pretty wide reach and quite a large customer base that is always looking for new campaigns to back.

I am wondering the exact same thing...
I am also hearing some people say that they will not support the kickstarter but will buy if BBTS carries them, but also unsure what this means...
Also, yeah, super bad time for doing this.

If this new Spawn figure has tons of articulation like a Marvel Legend, then I'll bite. If it's just another hyper detailed plastic statue, then I ask "what's the point?"
There's a ton of pre-posed and very detailed figures of Spawn, but hardly any of them are poseable. I really enjoy the MK11 Spawn figure due to the heaps of articulation it has. That's how I hope the Kickstarter Spawn figure ends up.

Todd displayed the prototype for this figure at Toy Fair, and in that form it was literally just a statue. No mention was made of adding articulation - or NOT adding articulation - so it's up in the air exactly what this figure will be until details are revealed on April 8 (this Wednesday). But that said, in this day and age Todd would have to be a complete dunce to try and run a Kickstarter campaign this figure as nothing more than a glorified statue. If he does this will fail, and fail hard. And the deck is already stacked against it due to the pandemic bullshit going on.

Considering the fact that he doesn't like articulation on his figures in the first place (forgot where he said that), it won't be a surprise to me if he goes that way. Part of the reason why his initial Spawn line died a decade ago was aside from the fact that he likes rehashing his past figures, he stopped adding useful articulation as well.

Yes, he's going to be the laughing stock of the toy world again if he decides to sell another Spawn statue masquerading as an action figure like what he did in recent years.

Why does he even need funding? Isn't his company doing alright? He's making plenty of action figures of other lines so I wouldn't see why he'd need funding for a single Spawn figure.

I don't think it's about the money as much as a way for the company to gauge interest in selling product directly to their customer base and bypassing retail. IMO, anyway.

The MK 11 Spawn that just came out is bad ass. If this Kickstarter figure is like that articulation wise and comes with tons of accessories and hopefully a soft goods cape with wiring, I'll get it. I've gotten tons of great figures from Kickstarter, I'm sure there are pros and cons for McFarlane to try this on Kickstarter.

BBTS has done this for several kickstarters. It lets them get supported but you don't actually pay anything until the figure is released. I have NO idea how it works, I imagine BBTS must make some deal with kickstarter or else I don't see them fronting the money for every preorder in full.

Is this a kind of bad joke from Todd ?

Lets see, we are talking of McFarlane Toys, we are talking of Todd McFarlane, a super sales with Spawn comics, HBO animated series, old school great figures from Spawn, AvP, and much , much others....I mean, I dont think that MFT has not a few grands in their account.

And now, in this world crisis, where people is passing much suffering and it seems that it comes more, do you want to start a kickstarter campaing?, why ? Because your last releases (MK scorpion, Destiny , Fornite) are pure shit and you dont sell?...

Come on, take the bussines seriously, you dont need excuses like a kickstarter campaing to remade the best and iconic 7" and 12" Spawn figures with ARTICULATION, make new ones with a decent paint job, and let us decide if we buy or not when we can see the final product. Do it well, be humble, and think twice when you have ideas like this bad one.

Im sure that Todd is a great guy, but with this , he is not acting well.

    Just my opinion...

    Stay safe bros.

What are you talking about? In that same interview he specifically says it's going to be hyper articulated despite his dislike breaking up the sculpt because that's what the market demands.

By running a kickstarter he is doing a few things. Firstly, he is circumventing toy stores. As he says in interviews at Toy Fair getting a one off into a toy store is difficult. Secondly, by running a kickstarter he is guaging interest and reducing risk. Take a wrong turn and your business goes sour.

By running a kickstarter he is publicly showing the damand his character does or doesn't have which may also help with getting the movie up and running. If the campaign is successful we will likely see the rest of the lineup and in all likelihood they'll end up in stores. Ultimately, if he puts up a good product that is as good if not better than his MK11 Spawn it should do really well.

As for existing lines; these have been hit and miss but to say his fortnite line is bad and doesn't sell is plain wrong. It's nearly 30 figures deep in less than two years. They've released vehicles and other accessories. The articulation on these is the best in their entire lineup and compares to Hasbro and NECA. The fortnite line is making bank. The MK11 line isn't that bad and each wave is better than the last. Hopefully this trend continues. The fact a third wave is coming and that Spawn figure is sold out shows that it's not even close to being a miss.

Probably worth noting that the MK11 spawn sold out while the color tops Spawn is still easy to find retail at a relatively low price. That alone should show Todd that articulation is a must.

Classic McFarlane. If he complains about the sculpt breaking up due to the articulation, then he should just do semi-statues instead like that Color Tops Spawn that's still stinking up some retail stores.
