Hasbro and Disney Extend Strategic Merchandising Relationship for Marvel and Star Wars Franchises

Agreement Extends Hasbro’s Global Toy and Game Licensed Merchandise Rights

PAWTUCKET, R.I. & BURBANK, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Feb. 21, 2020– Hasbro, Inc. (NASDAQ:HAS) and The Walt Disney Company (NYSE: DIS) today announced a renewal of Hasbro’s rights under its strategic merchandising relationship for major Disney entertainment properties Marvel and Star Wars.

Under the Marvel license agreement, Hasbro will continue to develop a wide range of toys and games for Marvel’s global Universe of more than 8,000 characters, including Iron Man, Spider-Man, Captain America, Black Widow and Black Panther. The Star Wars license agreement includes the rights to toys and games based on entertainment like Star Wars: The Clone Wars and The Mandalorian, incorporating fan favorite characters such as The Child from The Mandalorian, affectionately known as Baby Yoda. The agreements are multi-year agreements.

The agreements cover entertainment released during their terms for the respective franchises, including all film and television properties as well as properties from Disney+.

“We are pleased to build on our relationship with Disney and extend our agreement for Marvel and Star Wars franchises,” said Brian Goldner, Hasbro’s Chairman and CEO. “Disney’s celebrated franchises are consistently ranked as top toy properties and provide expansive content for us to build upon for years to come.”

“Our longstanding relationship with Hasbro has provided generations of Disney fans with quality play experiences,” said Ken Potrock, president, consumer products commercialization, Disney Parks, Experiences and Products. “Continuing this successful collaboration for our Marvel and Star Wars franchises enables families and fans around the world to immerse themselves in our iconic stories and engage with our rich characters.”

A license no one else can afford. I assume Marvel and Star Wars are a packaged deal.

I assume Hasbro is hoping for a Star Wars turn around, I doubt it. It's pretty much over.

I actually think they do a great job with Star Wars toys, but not much people want beyond Lucas characters.

Probably not a packaged deal but if you already got Hasbro making all your stuff, why not keep going. On Hasbro's end, they wouldn't want to be left out of the next Star Wars outing really strikes gold.

I don't agree on there not being a potential Star Wars turn around. All it takes is one film. But if they continue as they are trying to market characters they pop in for 2 minutes and are easily forgettable, then yeah. There's this $30 figure in a big box for something I don't recognize.

Disney really did not make it easy to sell these character figures for the new trilogy. Even the desirable ones barely got a an altered look.

Now the Mandalorian? They actually created marketable characters.

Personally I wish they'd add more torso articulation and to dump those super rigid capes. Between Legends and Power Rangers, nothing exists for the Star Wars figures.

Also how is Darth Vader not just in continuous rerelease?

Not surprised by the news, but very pleased. I think Hasbro's done a fantastic job with their Marvel Legends figures. Anyone else doing them would be a step down.

I was a bit nervous. I hope its a better deal so prices can stabilize. Though it would have been interesting to see another companies take on the 3.75 scale since hasbro seems to be killing that part slowly.

Marvel is no surprise obviously but i was a bit nervous about Star Wars tbh. i guess the real concern is the vintage collection and how much news that is going to get. we'll see tomorrow.

I just hope the deal isn't the same and high end figures can get released here without a problem or a stupid price limit. Or even forcing Diamond Select to minimize their articulation.

I wonder if like... Hasbro was gonna bail on SW, but then Baby Yoda made them change their mind. I bet Disney played hardball and charged them more than last time and that is what took so long for them to make a deal.
