Am not super thrilled with the design choices for the character this time around, and they missed Margot Robbie's likeness, I think she has one of those faces that's hard to get right in sculpt. This is close but something seems off.

I don't see that being the case at all...likeness is fine here, it was really good on the figuarts figure and just ok/good enough on the Mafex figure.

Hard disagree. This costume looks more interesting and less creepy/sexualised than many costumes the character has had where it's just some sad middle aged creeps sexual wish fulfillment. .Suicide Squad being one of the worst offenders.

I don't think it's a gross look per se, but it isn't Harley Quinn to me. Side note, it's gotta burn Jussie Smollett's beans to see his sister getting a major role in Birds of Prey while he's constantly the butt of jokes and is destined to languish in obscurity hahaha

Personally I wish HQ used his traditional suit colors. That doesn't mean it has to be the exact same one from BTAS or anything in the new52 but it could be a uniform/costume. Though I do appreciate the patterns.

Though the character clearly uses her maniac pixie sexuality to her advantage.

Also Harley is generally a villain. She's not meant to be a role model for kids. Like she's a case of someone with a mental disorder trying to be a better person given her life choices but still....

Figure wise. That looks like the actress to me. If it looks off, well it's still a scale figure stuck in one face due to being an inanimate object.

Agree with you guys completely. I think its a problem with the entire movie as well (and was partly there in Suicide Squad too). These characters had unique defining costumes. This design just looks like someone with a really bad sense of fashion. Why not go with one of the iconic costumes? Yes, she is supposed to be crazy, but the entire point of the comics was that she wasn't completely bonkers! Reminds me of the scene from Tropic Thunder and the words of RDJ's character, "You never go full *****".

I agree with you that Suicide Squad design was bad. But. how is this any better? Its like some getup that was patched up together. So many good designs to go for, and they went with this crap. If they were going realistic, the Arkham City or Arkham Knight game's Harley costume would have been good, no? This is just bad, and as someone above put it, they took a beautiful looking actress and turned her into an unrecognizable "disgusting, disease-ridden juggalo crack whore". I mean come on!!!

That's a different scale, but I agree with you. Both Figuarts and Mafex I think have a better likeness thank this. I think even the last few Hot Toys Harley's have had better likenesses, maybes it's the smirk. Something about it just doesn't look like Margot Robbie, still a great sculpt.

I didn't say anything about her being sexualised. I just said she looks completely gross.

And the costume isn't "interesting," IMO. It looks like she mugged a homeless 70's roller skater after escaping from the methadone clinic.

This is hardly the first time I've heard this criticism, but if this is true, then I wonder why it is sooooo many girls cosplay this specific version of her?

I go to 2 anime conventions a year, and since Suicide Squad's trailer (Not the release of the actual movie, just the first trailer) I've seen no less than 10 SS Harley Cosplayers per convention. I've seen classic, Arkham, gender-bent, and variants of Harley in this same time frame, but the overwhelming majority have been of the SS version.

Ask the cosplayers. But the interesting thing about the BoP costume was the initial reaction from women online was "wow, you can tell the costume designer for this was a woman", and there are already lots of cosplayers making their own designs for it.

I’m guessing Hot Toys will make a few versions, but this expression isn’t very desirable. I think the likeness is good, but maybe an extra happier head would have been nice.

No, you'll find this toy is very tame being a DC licensed product.

Speaking of which, what Phicen body would go best with that Harley Quinn head?
I'm thinking Suntan mid 23b (extra detailed bits), as 12d would be an overkill.

I think the reason why there are so many cosplays of SS Harley is that the costume is easy to put together. Even if it was because they liked it, that does not mean it’s a good design though. The design is extremely gaudy looking. There is no coherence to it. Neither does it communicate a harlequin look. Even the Eldar Harlequins had the right idea

If they liked it, they thought it was a good design. There's not really such a thing as "objectively good" or "objectively bad" in this kind of thing.

I mean, if there was a Batman costume with a eye mask, ripped black jeans and a T-shirt with a Batman logo, its possible that many would adopt it for cosplay. Its even possible that many would like it. That does not make it a good design though, right?

Perhaps to put it differently, you can always evaluate between designs comparatively at least. One design can be said to communicate a character better than a different design. In that sense, since Harley is supposed to be a Harlequin, you would expect that fact to be communicated (just like Joker should communicate that he is a clown/jester). The more clearly these truths are communicated, the better the design.

As an aside though, if you subscribe to a realist view rather than a nominalist/conceptualist view, then art does become an objective field. The Harley costume here would qualify under such a realist analysis as objectively ugly. But, that is outside of the scope of a toy forum for sure haha.

Again, another person who doesn't understand. I don't think Harley looks sexualized in this movie at all. I just think her character design makes her look like a super-disgusting white trash drug addict, which is the farthest from her original concept that you could possibly get.

You're not making sense. There's few Joker costumes that make him out to be a clown or jester. He just wears a purple suit in most of his incarnations.

Sorry you just can't accept that people like the costume. It doesn't have to literally look like a harlequin.

Phicen is the old name of TBLeague who makes seamless bodies. Sideshow even uses them for their Wonder Woman and Court of the Dead figures.

I am not sure the best incarnations of the joker just wears a purple suit. There is usually other colour choices (like the white face) that do convey that he is a clown/joker.

The problem with the Harley in SS was that she looked more like a prostitute with her attire. It would be at least understandable if that was her established costume in the comics, but it wasn't the case either. Dressed like a prostitute does not communicate that one is aiming to be funny as well. So it is a mixed message i.e. incoherent.

As for Harley looking like a harlequin, if she DID look like a harlequin, then the design would be coherent. Otherwise, one must concede that the design is incoherent.
