One of the surprises from SDCC 2019 was that not only was Mattel relaunching MOTU in a new retro format with WWE Origins, but that they were taking that body style and applying it to the WWE universe in a big cross over. Titled Masters of the WWE Universe – the mash up takes MOTU vintage style bodies, with the new articulation points seen on Origins figures, and works WWE personalities into the mix.
Each are decked out with armor and weapons like a MOTU figure would be, all while keeping their unique WWE traits. Cena gets a He-Man sword and shield plus his chest armor, while keeping his trademark jorts and fade. HHH gets a celtic themed skull helmet and hammer inspired by his crazy ring entrances. And so on. To go along with all this, they also put out a Grayskull inspired ring with green rocky sides and skull based ring posts, complete with two additional figures (Cena and an alt HHH). These are all Wal-Mart exclusives in the USA, and are available now.
I really enjoyed the Origins He-Man set from SDCC, and I like the idea. I do think some refinement will be welcome, and they have some time to do that. This extension is not something I would jump in on normally, but they are cool for what they are, and introduces the format to a younger generation. Plus, for MOTU customizers, I can see these bodies and parts working wonders.
Mattel sent through the first wave and the ring to check out, so we’ve run them through some pics to show what they can do. Check it all out after the break, and hit Walmart if you dig em!
