Playmates BW TMNT Set 005

Playmates Toys revealed a comic inspired Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Black and White Figure 4-Pack, which will be exclusive to Walmart. The set features the four comic inspired Turtles that Playmates released a few years back, only in black and white. The set includes a reprint of TMNT #1, with a new cover by Kevin Eastman.

While pricing has not been revealed, a release date has! The figures will be available on Walmart.com starting on Thursday, August 18th. They will then be released in Walmart stores in mid-August. Check out the new photos after the jump.

The packaging alone makes it worth it. Lord knows playmates has to do something. Between Neca, dc collectibles and now super7, they need something new. That new cartoon along with toys are going over like a lead balloon.

Indeed, and I don't know if these will do something, given that Neca already release their black and white turtles. Not sure if the ones that might be interested in them already have the neca ones.

The package is tight but these look like the old comic figures released in the last toy line. Honestly those figures were garbage compared to the rest of the line. I know playmates is trying but I feel like they drop the ball in big ways not just with TMNT but other toy lines as well. At this point I’d think almost any company would be better even Bandai of America and I hate BoA.

I'll have to see these at the store. Promo shots haven't wowed me. $50 or less and I'll consider it. I have my NECA ko's for comics TMNT, but I do like the B&W look.

Not everyone wants to pay $25+ a turtle for NECA. There are all sorts of level of "collector" and I'm certain there are tons of people who would buy this.

Interesting point, but I doubt that people looking for cheaper versions might be interested in black&white version(just a hunch, could be wrong though)

Considering the Black & White Neca goes for $300+, I know I'm interested. I just want to see these in person. I almost bought the colored TRU ones a few years ago.

I can't count the number of times I've seen parents (most of the time dads) show a kid a retro figure as "Hey, look! This is what I grew up with!" and often dropping it in the cart. Happens often at Walmart. I think Walmart is the "gateway drug" to eventually moving on to NECA or Mezco. I fully support Playmates for trying to take a sliver of the collectibles pie. They've been putting out TMNT consistently for 30+ years.

    More repaints?

It feels like a joke when you consider the capability of playmates to deliver the BEST, and most popular, TMNT stuff, while all these other companies are having a go at it.

I like that the packaging nods to the other incarnations of the turtles but graphically this package is a hot mess. It's a visual cacophony and not in a good way.

I passed on these turtles when they came out before and I'll pass on this B&w release. I think the sculpt is subpar, especially compared to NECA. Glad there's a budget option for people but this one isn't for me.

I used to own the colored version of these Turtles when they came out a few years ago (2014?). These actually look superior to the colored ones but they still have the weird wrists.

Yeah I have those too and my only gripe is they don’t have wrist swivels which normally would be ok but they positioned the hands in an awkward position.

I don't think they pulled off the black and white comic effect. They look more like zombies/demons to me.

It’s almost hard to believe that Playmates Toys is releasing these same sculpts again. Fourth time I think? I got b&w Raphael at SDCC 2014. Not only that, but why Black & White with Red bandanas? The old comics featured full color covers with black and white inner pages. I don’t recall seeing this look much, and I think it was ultimately a bad judgement call. These could have been some kind of substitute for NECA, but Playmates couldn’t even get the idea of b&w turtles right. Couldn’t they have added the wrist articulation also?
