Jurassic Park Cryogenic Barbasol Can Replica Coming From Chronicle Collectibles

Posted on July 5, 2018 at 8:21 am by Joe Moore under General Toy News

An officially licensed prop replica of the Cryogenic Barbasol Can from Jurassic Park, which was hiding dinosaur embryos in the film, is coming from Chronicle Collectibles. Io9 was given a first look at the collectible. In the film, Dennis Nedry is shown smuggling stolen embryos from Jurassic Park, cleverly hiding the vials in a working Barbasol shaving cream spray can. The replica from Chronicle Collectibles opens just as it does in the film, and includes an assortment of embryo vials for you to display.

Pre-orders will open later this Summer. They are looking at an estimated price of $200, but that doesn’t seem top be finalized. No details on release date was available at this time. We’ll update with more info once it becomes available. Click the banner image for the full photo.

This is really awesome, probably one of the cooler props from the movie I'd want to own, but I feel like it'll most likely be out of my price range. This shouldn't cost more than $100 but I bet it will.

It depends on material they use and if the vials are removable or not. Also, dual licensing is likely going to drive the cost up a bit.

    Edit:
Looks like they're shooting for a $200 price range on it.

Dang it, $200, that's about what I figured. Granted it's probably made well with quality materials, just a tad bit too pricey for me. Still, it's an awesome piece.

A can of Barbasol costs like 99 cents at walmart.

    Just sayin'.

That's the shell then, and not a movie accurate one. So even if you wanted a non-accurate replica shell, how much will the other stuff cost? You know where fans can find authentic sized vials and a holder that can screw into place? How long will it take to construct it once you have all the correct pieces?

Yeah just split it open, then design threads on the inside, thread the bottom cap that's now destroyed since you opened it, create all the internals and the plastic vials. I'm sure you'll be done for way less than $199 more! /s

I haven't bought any of CC's stuff but I might be in on this. Such a cool piece of the movie.

Woah, people would actually buy this? I mean, if it was the actual prop used for the movie, I can understand. But this is just a replica of an item that just doesn't stand out, no? How would you even "appreciate" this piece lying on the shelf?

How can you say it doesn't stand out? It's an iconic part of the movie; the theft of the dino DNA was the whole reason the plot of the movie happened.

I would leave it opened up on the shelf, that's how I'd appreciate it on a shelf. Just like any other film prop?

That would look awesome on a glass shelf (opened/can on it's side behind the tech) with a Dennis Nedry and Compy Pop.

Sure, but its like an item that is not that unique, right? What would you appreciate about this replica of a prop that is not unique to begin with?

I mean, take the movie Matrix. If someone were to make a prop of the shades worn by Neo, would you buy it? I would hope not, because its not unique! Only way it would have uniqueness is if it were the very prop used on the set!

I guess what I am saying is I don't see the value of something being bought as a collectible when the item itself is commonly available for purchase. Only time such an item would seem like a worthy collectible is if it was actually the original used in the set (at which point it becomes unique by virtue of being that very item you saw in the movie).

You see the pictures that have all the internals of the movie's can and that it's got the Dino DNA vials right? It's not just a can of Barbasol.

Regular Barbasol cans don't have embryo storage units that come out of the bottom.

Of course, it has a false interior to store the vials while a normal can would not. But what I am pointing out is that none of it is actually unique by itself, right? The can is not unique in its appearance. Neither are the vials (which one can abundantly see if they were to visit any lab to give blood). Do you think its worth it to pay $200 just for the functionality of a can that can fit in these vials inside? Is that "uniqueness" worth $200?

I suppose your answers are an overwhelming "yes"!. But objectively speaking, is that actually true? Unless you are planing on pulling the same heist as the fat guy did using this can, I am not sure there is value!

How about this, I don't see anything different between this product and a life size lightsaber hilt. Do you? They're both just movie prop replicas. No one "uses" film props, they display them on a shelf like all of us do for toys. If the can wasn't shaving cream and was just some special sci-fi looking cylinder that had no logo on it would that make it better? The tubes definitely aren't the same type of tubes they collect blood in, not that I've ever done. The embryo vials are much smaller.

Maybe it's like the spy type of thing in me that makes it cool too. Like there must be a dozen easy James Bond type objects that Q gives him that they could do props of that are normal every day objects. You see no value in those if you were a massive Bond fan?

Well, with the saber hilt, I think the reason why it would stand out is that it does not exist in real life, hence there is a uniqueness to it. So it seems valuable from the perspective of it representing in appearance, what the concept art dictates for its appearance.

You could then say that there isn't a can in real life with a hidden compartment for Dino vials. But that seems more on the level of functionality than appearance. In terms of appearances, you are looking at something that you could easily purchase.

I suppose you could say that your focus is actually on the appearance of the vials and its housing. Only issue is that such form of housing is also not that uncommon, though perhaps hard to purchase outside of a laboratory setting, and the cost of the real thing could actually be much more expensive. So yes, I stand corrected that if one really wants to have that appearance of the vials + housing captured, then it does stand out in that sense

I think I see where you are coming from. I guess its a matter of how we enjoy movies too. For me, I tend to remember movies in terms of characters more than what they use. So it seems that I am one of those persons who would buy a Batman figure than spend money buying his utility belt.

But now in discussing this with you, I have come to realize there are others (like yourself) who enjoy the movie in terms of the gadgetry as well. I can now see how in such a scenario, how one would legitimately want to recreate the appearance of that gadget itself.

Think of it as an action figure, but instead of a character it’s an item. It’s, at its base, a toy, like we all here collect. It’s just a 1:1 scale accessory. If they made a hot toy with this as an accessory would you not find it cool?

I think it’s neat as hell. But for 200$ I’d have to use it to smuggle narcotics across the border to pay for it.

I'm not sure why anyone thinks this is the same as a normal can of shaving foam regardless of what they are "into"

I have never seen a can of shaving foam with this in it.
