Posted on June 19, 2018 at 6:16 pm by DESTRO under DC Toy News, San Diego Comic Con

More breaking SDCC 2018 action figure news from Hollywood Reporter, this time Mattel shows off the Aqua Man Who Destroys the Sea King Box set and Hot Wheels DC Superman Action Comics No. 1. The box set includes Aquaman, Ocean Master and Black Manta as 6″ scale figures. Each has about 23 points of articulation. That set will be priced at $60. The Hot Wheels exclusive is a mini pack designed to look like the first appearance of superman, complete with a tiny figure. That will be priced at $20.

Critical fail! The Aquafigures are too big and the Superfigure is too small. Mattel STILL can't do anything right.

Aren't the figures from the Aquaman set repainted DCUC? Why are they too big?

You cannot do the Superman set in 6". It would be too expensive, but you can do it in 3.75/4" scale. but they did not. If they had, they would have theirs, we would have ours, everybody happy.

This actually looks awesome especially Ocean master. Since Multiverse is kinda shit on I doubt these will be too expensive on the secondary market anyway.

Well from the waist down at least it looks like they are new molds. No DCUC gaping crotch pits, slimmer thighs and double jointed knees. I'm not 100% sure but there looks like there is something different with the elbows

I have avoided this line almost entirely. The figures just don't look thst great to me, but that Black Manta seems to be the only six inch one we have... so I MAY go for it if I can find a decent price. Have these figures gotten ANY better though?

I understand why Mattel went with the joint celebration of 80 yrs of Superman and 50 you’re of hotwheels. I would drop the cash for this as a gift for my son in law who’s a huge fan of both, and it would go with his hotwheels collection as any bigger scale would not go well and I think the quality would be the bigger price.

The Superman one would be cool if it was a figure instead of a figurine.

An Action #1 Superman action figure would have been more interesting to me than a Hot Wheels release of the generic green car Superman smashed on the cover that just happens to include a tiny Supes figurine.

Not really. They are soft 3D sculpts with cheap quality.

I didn't say anything about the Superman set. I asked why you think the Aquaman figures are too big, if they're 75% reused DC Universe Classics. Or do you just want everything in 3 3/4" scale?

I give Mattel a hard time, but these are really neat. The elbows on the Multiverse figures don't look double jointed to me, which is disappointing, but Aquaman's face has a lot more personality and character than we've seen from DCUC or Multiverse before. I hope it's a sign of things to come.

and I told you why, you just weren't paying attention. The Aquaset is 6 inch. The Superset is 2 inch. Obviously I collect 4 inch, so one is too big and the other is too small! Mattel ignored the 4 inch collector yet again.

    Critical Fail Confirmed.

Oh, and from what I am seeing so far, I am not the only one not impressed by Mattel. Oh well, there is always that old adage: The customer is always right.

Oops, sorry Mattel, I forgot you don't like that one because it makes good business sense.

I do not give Mattel a hard time anymore. That was 10 years ago, hard time is too Rita Rudner, Born to be Mild, Tame......

Love this Aquaman set. Love that they all got the new multiverse bodies they've sloooooowly been transitioning to (year one Batman was the first I think) then most of the last wave. Not only that, but Mattel is the only company that doesn't make it a nightmare to get the exclusives (pre-order on-line and pick up at show or brave the lines of you want- I wish Hasbro would pick up on that.)

To be fair just because you want 4inch figs doesn’t mean Mattel should make them or that everyone else wants them. Hasbro also dropped the 4 inch marvel line almost completely because of sales. 6 inch figs sell better then 4inch ones hence why a majority of lines do strictly 1/12th scale figures

...Since when? They're preeetty good sellers, at least in my area, and presumably many many others' going by their experiences, including those of people who actually work in the stores they're sold in. Hasbro wouldn't be pumping out 9-10 waves a year + multi-packs and the MCU 10th anniversary subline if the line weren't doing well.

Anyway, I don't want to turn this into a discussion about the success of an unrelated line, so back on topic: this multi-pack looks pretty nice. I'd still much prefer that Mattel give us double-jointed elbows, but these figures still look fairly nice with the upgrades that we have gotten.

Heeheeheehee I can’t look at classic Aquaman and NOT think of the mean robot chicken and YouTube skits towards Aquaman.
Batman: “Aquaman, your mission is to...”
Aquaman: “infiltrate the enemy base? Take on the Super Villain?”
Batman: “summon us tuna sandwiches. We’ll be hungry when we get back”
    **other Justice League members snicker**
    Aquaman: “...”
