New In-Hand Photo of Final Packaged Marvel Legends Silver Surfer

Posted on March 28, 2018 at 8:42 am by Joe Moore under Marvel Toy News

The Marvel Legends 6″ Scale Silver Surfer, which was announced back at Toy Fair 2018, looks to be hitting stores soon. The figure will be a Walgreens Exclusive. The figure includes his trademark cosmic surfboard, a few interchangeable hands, and a few effects pieces.

The figure was spotted in Mexico, where it’s apparently hitting stores now. The pic comes via the Marvel Legends Collectors page. Click the thumbnail for the full image.

Walgreens exclusive and all we are getting is (by the looks of it) your standard metallic color and re-used effects/hands. Doesnt look like a new mold either.....
    Thumbs up Hasbro -____-

Why does it need to be a new mold? It's using the Sunfire body, which is a newer mold. I don't see anything wrong with the figure itself, so the reused parts argument is pointless here.

    1. Cause its a Walgreens exclusive (hence more expensive). Mind you that the standard releases have gone up in price since a couple of years ago.

    2. Cause The Surfer is basically your most basic figure mold + paint. No extra stuff to mold onto him (eg. holsters, ponytails, jacket, other accessories). You are basically painting your naked male figure and selling it at the same price as say Rogue.
On top of that, they didnt even bother with some blue shading (from what it seems), even though they clearly acknowledge that it is needed (see promo pic)

Obviously Photoshop is a substantially cheaper way to wow your average consumer.

Meanwhile almost 20 yrs ago, Toybiz actually bothered to throw in some blue shading.

Pointless ? I am not some SJW complaining for the sake of it, or nitpicking. The Surfer is a plain figure, the least they could have done is mold new effects and throw in some shading (in place of all those useless hands)......

Reusing parts on figures like Surfer and Medusa is how they can budget for completely new sculpts like The Thing, just FYI

Yup. There's also nothing about the Surfer's character design that warrants a completely new mold. There's nothing on the figure that looks out of place.

No vac-metal, eh? Alas, at least I have that previous vac-metal surfer from ToyBiz days. Another strike out for me on this Walgreens exclusive, as with the oddly-coloured Super Skrull. Waiting anxiously for the Thing, however.

It's hard to tell from this picture, whether this is the case...but it is possible to achieve a shinier metallic effect without vac-metal. For example, the Gold Metal Men figure on my shelf seems extremely shiny for a mere paint job, whereas Platinum would benefit from a similarly shiny treatment. However, not unlike this upcoming Surfer, she sports the standard "grey" silver look. (I'm wondering whether some "wet-look" clear coat would achieve the sort of metallic look I'd prefer? BTW, I sprayed Iron with Dullcoat and he benefits from the matte look...at least to me.)

Also, I'm tiring of these same ol' "energy effects" and hope that this Surfer AT LEAST comes with a "flying stand" and won't be earthbound like the recent FF Torch was.

Incorrect. At least in NY, Walgreens ML figures are only $19.99, same as everywhere else (some other places charge more, actually). In fact, they're been running a promotion for a while where all their ML figures were on sale for $12.99.

Incorrect again. Rogue didn't come with any accessories (except maybe a BAF part). Surfer has alternate hands, effect pieces, and (of course) the surf board. It all evens out.

The "blue shading" you're referring to is just the shiny blue space background reflecting onto the character for dramatic advertising purposes and clearly not indicative of any painted shading on the figure itself or any "acknowledgement" by Hasbro that it is needed.

Besides, if they DID shade the figure I'd bet anything that there'd be a segment of the fandom bitching about that as well. "But I wanted a SILVER Surfer! GTFO with that blue shading!"

Can't please anyone, I'm tellin' ya.

Ummmmmm....yeah, you're nitpicking. The Surfer design lends itself to a fairly plain figure. You're totally nitpicking.

walgreens exclusives are 35+ GBP in the UK, only available in comic cons or ebay stores
    https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2018-MARV...p2047675.l2557

standard releases range from 23 to 26 GBP (Angela was 27 GBP) in my local comic book store (Forbidden Planet).

They used to be MAXIMUM 23 GBP. So, outside of the US and for the rest of this globe, I do not stand corrected.

By "accessories" I meant everything on the figure which didnt belong originally on the "naked" mold. In case of Rogue, it was straps around hands ("gloves"), jacket, belt, kneecaps and a whole lots of hair. Maybe I should have clarified but then again I thought it was obvious.

Not quite, seeing as Hasbro prefers to overruse "metallic" paint than genuinely add some good old shading.
I didnt confuse myself, Dolemite. The image has a digitally enhanced lighting effect to add to its coolness. Never did I state that they were meant to add shading but didnt.
What I did mention is that they are basically showing a product that looks cooler than what you actually get. They aknowledge that *some* blue would have made the figure better yet they choose not to go that way. Even so they didnt even use a shinier metallic paint..... (Rann got it right)

Exactly. Its a plain design which is why a company that actually cares should have made everything else about the figure (effects and paint, at least) exceptional and special

Bottom line, this is just another Surfer figure, far from definitive. Pity, cause the Silver Surfer is probably the most classic cosmic hero in the Marvel Universe. But ofcouse, how about another Chris Pratt/Starlord figure ? Cause we need one.

Look man, they have released Deadpool, Captain America and Spiderman more times than what I can count. They sell well and they are cheap to make I get it. But there arent multiple version of the Surfer. You only get one chance every what, 5 years ? and you deliver you most standard recycled toy like he is some fodder character in place of who exactly ?
Deadpool with boxers and pink slippers ?

The Silver Surfer is a bald guy comprised of one solid color, and in his underpants. I wasn't anticipating much in the way of sophistication regarding the presentation, because it's the simplest design ever. I think that's been acknowledged.
And despite these things I love him as a character, so this is the version of the Surfer that I will be buying.

What I will grant is that a new effects piece to represent the power cosmic would've actually been pretty cool here, but I'm not really sure what other accessories would be better to pack with this guy. It's not like he's shown us much in the way of belongings.

You have to examine it in a vacuum though. Surfer is only available at Walgreens stores, so they're presumably dictating how much they wanna spend on tooling, and Hasbro's doing the best they can with the budget. I really don't know what more you could want. He's bald, muscly, nude, silver and has his board. Anything else is just nitpicky

Ah, well mate, I didn't know you were in the UK. That changes things a wee bit...comparing exchange rates reveals that you blokes are indeed paying through the ass for this stuff (23 GBP = 32.38 USD, which is fucking nuts).

Oh, I understood what you meant. I thought it was obvious when I replied that the Surfer figure's lack of bells and whistles was made up by the fact that he got extra accessories that Rouge didn't. Maybe I should have clarified?

Serious question: Do you have any custom/painting skills? 'Cause if the figure bums you out that much a simple paint wash would probably really make the details of the Surfer figure pop and improve things greatly. Otherwise, it's likely that this will be the last Surfer figure released for quite some time.

    @Black Arbor & Brownfinger :
Maybe its ridiculous but I would have really liked sth that resembles the Bowen statue (facesculpt and paint). In place of all those stupid extras we have seen million of times. Quality over quantity.

@Dolemite: Yeah exactly, its certainly overpriced for what you get. To be honest, I think the treatment towards the character is a bit crappy. Namor got a new awesome headsculpt, re-worked body parts (and great paint apps). The Surfer got jack.
yeah, I ll touch him up for sure. But I shouldnt have to, y know ?

I could argue the promo-image point further but whatevs, that GIJoe packaging is dope so I concede.
