One of the most devastating events in The Walking Dead, both the comic and the TV Show, was when Rick’s group of Survivors meet Negan and his Saviors. That encounter cost Rick one of his most trusted friends and set them on a course for war that would change the entire direction of the series. On the show, Negan’s introduction brought about the demise of two fan favorites in Abraham and Glenn. The scenario, which played out over two episodes (the Season 6 finale and the Season 7 premiere), was one fans have had mixed reactions to when it aired, but will undoubtedly have a lasting impact on the show for years to come. McFarlane Toys has released a special The Walking Dead Negan and Glenn Deluxe Box Set based on the encounter. The set is part of their 5″ scale series. It includes both Negan and Glenn, a display stand and numerous weapons.
McFarlane Toys has sent along the set for us to check out. Read on for my thoughts and a full photo shoot.
McFarlane Toys The Walking Dead – Negan and Glenn 5″ Scale Deluxe Box Set
Pros
- Good sculpts
- Really good Glenn head sculpt
- Plenty of accessories
- Solid articulation
Cons
- No alternate head for Glenn
Overall
The box set comes in a (fairly oversized) collector friendly window box. The large window allows you to easily see both figures and all of the included accessories. The box has some Walking Dead graphics and the back of the box features previews of other Walking Dead collectibles from McFarlane. Inside the box, you will fine figures for Glenn and Negan. Accessories include two assault rifles, two pistols, a stopwatch, an interchangeable hand for Negan, Lucille – Negan’s barbed wire bat, and a display stand.
This set shows why McFarlane has such a vocal following of fans for their 5″ scale Walking Dead figure line. The figures are far more developed compared to many of the 7″ scale Walking Dead figures in the Color Tops line. Thankfully, it appears as if figures released in the 7″ scale will begin to incorporate the articulation style of these 5″ figures (starting with Stranger Things and Star Trek). Both Glenn and Negan have detailed and fairly accurate sculpts with plenty of articulation. The head sculpts are handled well for the size, with Glenn’s being particularly impressive. There’s lots of tiny details, such as nice fabric texturing on the clothes that help these to hold up well to close inspection. While the articulation joints could be hidden a little better, the range of motion they provide more than makes up for it. As you can see in the photos below, Glenn has no problem kneeling to await his bludgeoning at the hands of Negan. Both figure can wield their included accessories with ease. And there are plenty of accessories included. Both include two guns, as well as character specific items. Negan can hold Lucille with both hands if you wanted to display him that way. Paint on the figures is decent, with noting jumping out as a glaring issue. The heavy red blood splatter does add to the overall look. The only real downside to this set is that Glenn does not include an alternate bludgeoned head sculpt.
With two good figures and a solid assortment of accessories, this box set is likely going to be a must have for fans of the 5″ series. It depicts one of the most memorable scenes in the show, and gives two fan favorite characters. The set is priced at $34.99 and should be in stores now. Check out some select photos below and the full gallery after that.
