New Preview of Xenomorph from Alien Covenant by NECA

Posted on April 27, 2017 at 9:02 am by Joe Moore under Aliens and Predator Toy News

Yesterday, we got our first look at the upcoming Alien: Covenant Xenomorph by NECA. That image came from a series of reveals for Alien Day, courtesy of Fox. Later in the day, NECA released their own photo of the upcoming Covenant Alien figure. The new image showcases the amazing range of motion and articulation the figure will have. The figure will have over 30 points of articulation as well as a bendable tail. It’s due for release in June. Check out the photo by clicking the banner image above.

I dunno those fingers look a little weird. I see hairdryers in the future of many buyers

What the hell is that! So creepy, why are the back tubes sticking straight up? What is up with its hands? why is its tail so short and round? I am having an attack will there be any neomorphs?

Looks pretty awesome to me. I don't think the hands look any more or less goofy than big chap's do.

Interesting take on the Big Chap design. I like it!

It's funny, though...it seems that the further we get away from the original Alien movie, the less biomechanical the Alien itself appears. This new design harkens back to the original in many ways, but overall it looks more like a flesh-and-blood creature.

Y'know, it's funny: I think part of the reason this figure looks so creepy to some people is because we've gotten so used to the old style of Xenomorph design, that when they change it subtly, just enough, not too little and not too much, it kind of evokes the uncanny valley effect, but for Xenomorphs instead of human faces or overall reality.

Exposed muscle fibers? The Xenomorph has finally gone the way of all other horror schlock design; I'm betting the movie has too...

My thoughts exactly. This is probably closer to what Giger was aiming for to begin with, but the classic Alien look has become so ingrained to most.

That said, while I like this new design overall, there are a few personal nits:
    - I've never been a fan of the human skull, either on this or the original Big Chap. To me, it kind of defeats the conceit of the Alien not having eyes; even though the sockets of the skull are empty, there's enough there for me to imagine eyes in the face.
    - As someone said upthread, the exposed veins are a little eyebrow-raising.
    - I'm hoping the two tubes attached at the collarbone region are posable, since I'm pretty sure they don't stand up like that in the footage I've seen of the new design.

    Otherwise, looks awesome.

Um...Giger created the classic Alien. He designed it in his signature biomechanical style and put together the suit and airbrushed it and everything. So, I'm pretty sure the original Alien was what he was aiming for, but that's not to say his design wouldn't evolve over time.

Wow... pretty ugly paint apps. Look at the veins, the teeth. Really sloppy. I guess they're not raising the bar very high for the factory painters... And why is it kind of a poopy brown? The Xeno seems pretty black in the trailers. Paint aside, sculpt looks great. I have a feeling the tubes on the back will be moveable.

Wow, what a bunch of whiney comments in this thread. The details are excellent, especially for a mass market toy. The design itself may not be what we're used to with the Xenos, but there's no denying it looks scary and imposing.

Definitely worthy of adding to the collection.

Well... yes and no. While it is true that he put together the suit personally, Giger was also not wholly satisfied with the results in the first film, both because of design compromises he had to make, and the on-screen appearance. During the brief period he was involved with the designs for Alien 3, he saw it as an opportunity to improve on some of those aspects with which he wasn't satisfied the first time round -- the site Monster Legacy has more info on that.

There's also a snippet from the letter he wrote to Fox concerning the initial omission of his name in the credits of Alien Resurrection (also on the Monster Legacy site):
    Quote:
The creatures in ALIEN:RESURRECTION are even closer to my original Alien designs than the ones which appear in ALIENS and ALIEN 3.
(Though it is worth noting he later said the Resurrection Aliens "looked like turds," so I suppose the above quote could be taken with a grain of salt.)

I do agree with your latter point, though, that it makes sense for the initial Alien design to have evolved over time.

I'd be surprised given how obvioius the human characters are there only to die. Did NECA even bother with human characters for Prometheus?

They did David, yes he's an android but I still say he counts as a "human" figure. In the upcoming "lost" wave they're releasing Shaw and Vickers whom they intended to release back when Prometheus was new.

I think that this odd(for a xenomorph)look now makes sense after seeing the movie.
