New In-Package Photos of Muhammad Ali v Superman 2-Pack by NECA

Posted on January 12, 2017 at 7:00 am by Joe Moore under DC Toy News

On Christmas weekend, NECA released our first look at the Muhammad Ali v Superman 2-Pack in its final packaging. Now, NECA has posted more photos of the packaging, giving us a great look at the final packaged set. The box pays homage to the classic DC Comics issue pitting the two against each other.

One of the most famous matches of all time comes to action figure form!

In 1978, legendary boxer Muhammad Ali proved that he truly was “the greatest of all time” by defeating the strongest man on Earth – Superman. Far from a grudge match, this battle in the pages of DC Comics’ historic Superman vs. Muhammad Ali would ultimately set the two up to save the planet from an alien invasion. Now for the first time ever, that iconic team-up comes to action figure form in a stylized set that pays tribute to the philanthropist, social activist and three-time World Heavyweight Champion.

Both 7” scale figures have over 25 points of articulation and feature comic-stylized deco based on Neal Adams’ spectacular cover art. Superman includes alternate ungloved hands.

This set is shipping to stores at the end of the month. Don’t be surprised to see it pop up on their Ebay and Amazon stores before that. Read on for all of the new photos.

This is one of those really cool obscure sets that come out that I love so much. Probably won't buy it but this is just really cool.

I just wish the eyes on Superman weren't closed/squinting. I love the comic style coloring and they nailed the ink lines on Superman. Also think Ali looks really cool.

not a fan of the faux inked comic art paint app but its pretty cool still. and clever reuse of parts as well.

I wonder how many will have a problem with that? I mean, this essentially is the Reeve Superman with a new head sculpt. I could see people complaining that the symbol and the boots aren't like they are in the comics.

Is that supposed to be Jimmy Carter in the front row? On that note, can we get a NECA Jimmy Carter figure while we're at it?

Well, this is really fucking unexpected. It better come with a reprint of the original comic!

The audience on the comic's cover is actually filled with 70's era celebrity cameos...it has a guide inside listing who's who. It's a fun cover.

    ...Tempting.

I mean, I was never really a boxing fan(even though my parents have always been really into the Rocky movies), so I don't know much about Ali(only sport star I really like in anyway is John Cena, and that's because of the meme), thus adding a bit of hesitation, but at the same time, it's a tribute to comic book silliness with a VERY interesting deco, so I might pick it up.

I think this is awesome. The closed eyes are pretty close to the actual art. They're just black lines on the cover, albeit a little thicker than the figure. But, they do look a little off. Maybe just a touch too high on the face. I think if they'd lower them a smudge, they'd look a lot better.

NECA is definitely blowing Mattel out of the water; especially with the Superman soft goods cape. Now where's my Bale Batman 2.0 7"?

Nevermind... I read the Nerdist article. 7" it is. A bit unusual for a comic pack but it was originally an oversized comic and Neca certainly isn;t bound by the way Hasbro does things.

Everything NECA does is either 7" scale or 1/4 scale unless the license wouldn't work well in either scale (such as the Gremlins, Little Big Planet, or the upcoming Child's Play), Mego style figures withstanding since they are not regular plastic figures but dolls and have always been around 8" tall. For whatever exact reason most of the collectible figure companies use the 7" scale (NECA, DC Collectibles, Diamond Select Toys, some Funko, old McFarlane and now McFarlane again) whereas companies that appeal to a wider audience (Hasbro or Mattel) seem to prefer the 6" scale.

I'm surprised that NECA can license and release a Superman figure. I thought only Mattel and DC Direct could do that.

I love the concept of this. I just wish Supes wasn't so slender. He looks deflated.
