NECA Making Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets Figures

Posted on December 22, 2016 at 1:16 pm by Joe Moore under General Toy News

NECA has quietly revealed, in a tweet, that they will be making toys based on the upcoming film Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets. The movie, the latest sci-fi epic from Luc Besson (director of The Fifth Element), features some wildly imaginative character and location designs, all ripe for some quality action figures. Check out the trailer and synopsis below.

In the 28th century, special operatives Valerian (Dane DeHaan) and Laureline (Cara Delevingne) maintain order throughout the universe for the government of the human territories. Under orders from their commander (Clive Owen), the duo embark on a mission to Alpha, an intergalactic city where diverse species share their technology and resources for the betterment of all. The ever-expanding metropolis is also home to sinister forces that jeopardize the future of mankind.

If they just make the aliens in the trailer, they have like 10 waves.

Your pants will stay clean because NO ONE is allowed to do Mad Max toys: George Miller just won't allow the rights.

Mad Max and John Wick are two series that I wish NECA would pick up. I never thought about Valerian and Laureline. This could be a massive and amazing wave. Drenched in Euro-scifi awesomeness. Lord I don't need another NECA line that I want to collect in its entirety. I can't wait.

Yeah, a good 1:12 figure of Mel Gibson as Mad Max would be a grail.

I think Mad Max is on almost everybody's wish list but nobody gets it because it just isn't available. I recall Randy once addressing John Wick and saying that while he enjoyed the flick it probably wouldn't do well in toy form.

That sounds about right. Really past John Wick I don't know how many other figures they could sell.

I don't know where you're getting that from. There was a whole line of figures years ago.

Now that Miller is back in complete control of the license, he refusing to allow any merchandise other than the tie-in video game for Fury Road. NECA has hit him up numerous times to do the entire franchise & Miller won't budge.

Oh, okay. Bummer. A NECA-made Lord Humungus figure would have been awesome.

If they did it in the 6' scale i'm sure they could sell plenty just as custom bases/henchmen for ML/DC collectors

They will most likely make only the lead characters and maybe an alien and/or droid that figure big in the film.

Not sure how excited I am about the movie, but the comic is one of my all time favourites. So, in that regard, I'll gladly buy anything NECA puts out. Plus, it's a good thing that the source material that Lucas so obviously ripped off for Star Wars is finally getting some mainstream attention.

is this the french comic strip from the 70s (before SW) that has a character thats frozen in a carbonite block? i remember seeing that randomly on some blog but couldn't recall the name of it. there were some other things too but i remember it was quite eye opening seeing all the similarities.

Maybe that comic art was just inspired by Peter Cushing, he's kind of always looked like that

The similarities are notable but it's not like Valerian invented most of these things, a lot of classic sci-fi tropes were established in ye ol' Buck Rogers and Flash Gordon stories. There are a ton of sci-fis from before the '70s that clearly set the tone for what would become the sort of standard used by Star Wars and Star Trek before it.

Agreed. Even if Lucas took some elements from Valerian or Kurosawa's movies (among others), Star Wars is its own thing, & is far more popular worldwide than any of the "ripped" properties.
Same could be said for many other characters: Batman (Zorro, The Shadow), Robocop (Japanese Metal Heroes, Marvel's Deathlock), ...

yeah, i originally mentioned tarkin but then edited it out cause i thought it would be silly to say lucas plagiarized that since cushing's looks are all his own.

anyway, yeah, thats it...doesnt seem as shocking as when i first saw it. the frozen guy still stands out but like was already mentioned the rest seemed pulled from sci fi/fantasy tropes...

The Kurosawa influence on Star Wars is a little different since it's a totally different genre but also Lucas was fairly vocal in admitting how much Kurosawa's work influenced him (particularly The Hidden Fortress influencing parts of ANH). At one point Lucas even wanted to cast Toshiro Mifune, a regular leading actor in Kurosawa's films, as Obi Wan but 20th Century was opposed to casting a Japanese actor in a lead role and Toshiro was concerned about how the image of the Samurai would be altered in Western perspective if he were cast.
