Great looking figure. Feels most inspired by McFarlane (especially with the shape of the mouth).

So I know that I shat all over the revoltech Spidey from about a month ago, but this thing is absolutely fantastic! That mid 90's McFarlane-esque style is the Venom I grew up with.

I don't really see McFarlane at all. This looks much closer to Angel Medina's version of the character if anything.

No, this is classic Larsen Venom. McFarlane always did Venom with a small, pointy mouth. Larsen started the perverse Venom face.

McFarlane didn't draw Venom in the mid-90's. He did Venom's original appearance, in 89/90 with a small mouth. Larsen did the mid 90's stories with the grotesque moosh, and Bagley closed out the 90's with the appearance of Carnage and the reappearance of the smaller jaw and larger eyes.

I see Larsen, but I also see McFarlane. I attached some example images, below.

My mistake. Regardless, it's that square jaw style from the 90's that I really adore and I'm glad you can see it every now and then on merch.

Another good example (sans the weird eye situation) is the 3.75" Stretch Strike Venom. Even though it's a smaller scale figure, that head sculpt may be one of my favorites on a Venom figure so far.

Hmmm... the Revoltech Venom looks NOTHING like either of those artwork to me.

Honestly, even Larsen is a tad bit of a stretch... I think the biggest influence, artwise, is the version of Venom found in the "Spirits of Venom"...
In that, Venom is grotesquely over-muscled, his face is monstrous, and the tongue is wild...

Oh well, regardless of who inspired the figure, or which art is closest, this will definitely be a highly popular figure. Its a pass for me, as I prefer Bagley's version of Venom found in Diamond Select and Marvel Select Venoms. The Revoltech Spidey is tempting tho. I have the Deadpool and it is FANTASTIC.

This is what first came to mind when I saw the figure....but, yeah, I agree, who cares, its a great looking figure. And anyway, who's to say that the design team didn't cherry pick from different interpretations of the character.

Anyway, the joints don't seem too segmented and conspicuous in these pics. So, I'm curious what he looks like in a straight standing pose.

I think we can all agree on that. Definitely looks to be influenced by a range of Venom interpretations. It looks great. Maybe this figure will push me to getting the previous releases as well (DP, SM).

Deadpool is FANTASTIC. I really love everything about it, and it is brimming with personality. Far better than any other 1:12 scale Deadpool figure. I had so much fun posing it for my blog pictoral.

I was pumped for this until I saw these photos. While I'm sure the articulation will be great, this design is a bit too "Deviant Art," for my tastes. I hate the poop tendril/spike thing going on all over his body (a trait I have long hated and I identify to be more in line with Carnage or the current Toxin as opposed to Venom, as Venom in the classic sense was always more smooth and sleek looking,) the Rob Liefeld styled proportions, the veined skin, the Fox animated series eyes, and the clawed toe feet. I'm just not feeling it.

It feels more like a redo of ToyBiz's Spiderman Classics Venom, than anything else. I was hoping for something a bit more smooth and stylized, like the Capcom vs Marvel styled artwork they were using when teasing this thing.

Totally agree. MvC-style would have been PERFECT, especially since 90% of the mold could be reused for other Marvel bruisers like Hulk, Sabretooth, Colossus, etc.

Oh Well. If he's as good as Deadpool, people who like this style will be in for a real treat! Great time for being a collector! Gone are the days of the 7 points of articulation Toybiz Marvel toys!

yeah, not sure what you mean by liefeld proportions when bengus'(capcom artist who drew the venom image that they used for the teaser) proportions are just as crazy and exaggerated. i have to admit though, a venom figure based on the bengus' mvc2 art would be amazing.

Like Liefeld, Bengus had some strange illustrations of Venom for the promotional material, but what I meant by that was I was actually expecting the final result of the figure to be closer to the in game sprites (which were quite better proportionately, in terms of fighting game sprites) than those actual pieces of art. The ridiculously huge upper torso and arms just kill this look for me. How does he wipe his butt?

The Venom look I've always preferred was either Bagley,Cho or Dotson (from their brief work on Venom from Marvel Knights Spiderman,) which was always sleek, lean, and muscular (although Bagley would sometimes push this envelope.) Once artists started taking liberties with him in his various miniseries and started making him Hulk sized, it killed that aesthetic for me. He just seemed less menacing looking at that point (and even less like Spider-Man's antithesis) and more like a giant black blob of goo and teeth.
