NECA Friday The 13th Part 3 – Ultimate Jason Voorhees – Toyark Photo Shoot

Posted on November 9, 2016 at 10:31 am by Joe Moore under Horror Toy News, Random Photo Shoot

The latest Ultimate 7″ Scale Figure from NECA is now available in stores. Jason Voorhees gets his second appearance in the Ultimate format. The first figure was the Friday the 13th Part 6 Ultimate Jason Voorhees. Following that extremely popular release is a Jason Voorhees based on one of the characters most important appearances; Friday The 13th Part 3. The film continues the story of Jason Voorhees as he kills anyone foolish enough to visit Camp Crystal Lake. The most notable aspect of the movie, though, is that Jason dons a hockey mask for the very first time! The Friday The 13th Part 3 Jason Voorhees Figure includes two head sculpts, two masks, and numerous weapons.

We’ve picked up the figure from Toyark sponsor Big Bad Toy Store. We have over 80 high resolution photos to check out! Read on for the photos and our review.

Friday The 13th Part 3 – Ultimate Jason Voorhees 7″ Scale Figure

Pros

  • A lot of accessories
  • Two very good head sculpts
  • Axe can be attached to damaged mask
  • Good articulation
  • Paint application is handled well
  • Masks look like an improvement over original prototypes shown
  • 3D lenticular packaging is a fun touch

Cons

  • Could have used a non-bloody alternate neck

Overall
Jason is packaged in a flapped window box. The front of the box features a 3D lenticular version of the movie poster, paying homage to the 3D roots of the film. The back of the box includes some photos of the figure as well as the byline for the film. There’s a single large photo of Jason Voorhees on the interior flap. Jason sits in a plastic tray, along with the alternate head/mask combo and his numerous accessories. The figure is held in with a single twist tie. The package includes regular and battle damaged head sculpts and masks, a machete, an axe, a pitchfork, a knife, a wrench, a fireplace poker and the all important harpoon gun. It’s a fun overall package, with the lenticular cover being especially impressive.

The figure is a mix of two version of Jason that NECA previously released. It takes parts from the standard and battle damaged Part 3 Jason Voorhees figures and adds in a bunch of accessories. The head sculpts and masks from each version are included. Unlike many other Ultimate Series figures, Part 3 Jason Voorhees features no new articulation. The original releases of the figure were already fully articulated. The new weapons are what a lot of fans will look forward to. All of the weapons are handled quite well. The Machete is pictured bloody in the official photos, but comes clean in the box. Of the new stuff, the pitchfork is probably my favorite addition. The weapons are mostly the more solid plastic pieces. The knife, poker and machete are a little softer, but far from the rubbery feel that can cause warping.

Paint applications look very similar to the prior releases, with this version looking a little darker in overall skin color, with a more apparent dark paint wash over it. It’s not quite as natural looking as the prototype version, but definitely gives a very gruesome visage to both head sculpts. The paint itself is handled well, with blood splatter looking quite vibrant and realistic against the face and neck. I do wish they had created a neck cut in the mold, allowing them to include bloody and non-bloody necks with the release, just to put it over the top. The hockey masks look to be an improvement over the prototype versions we had seen earlier this year. The shape seems much more in line with the film version now. The head sculpts and both masks all switch out with no trouble. Joints are solid, but never over tight or paint locked. The waist has good movement under the vinyl upper body overlay.

What NECA really focused on here was bringing two previous versions together in a cohesive package, all while adding in some new weapons for Jason to wield. The result is a comprehensive and definitive version of the Friday the 13th Part 3 Jason. As someone who missed out on the 2012 release of the originals, this is a version I was really happy to see offered. It’s a figure that holds up well with the other Ultimate horror figures and offers a lot of stuff in the box, giving fans plenty of display options. Check out some of the highlight photos below, as well as 80+ photos in the full gallery after that.

This release to me was essentially right up there with the recent Aliens and Predator releases, and was a 22 dollar accessory pack. Outside the mask and tools, there were no improvements that were made and it really felt like a missed opportunity by NECA to improve on some issues that the original figures had. Instead, they took a step backward with the heavy handed wash which causes the skin tones to be off, the cartoony and very poor blood applications on the clothes (compare it to the blood apps on the original battle damaged figure, and especially the Final Chapter bloody Jason for a clear example of how cartoony it is...,) and some issues that the original figures didn't have managed to creep into this one (the wobbly hips issue that plagued the part 6 figure.) If my original part 3 (battle damaged) figure had not taken a tumble off the shelf and broke at the hip, I would have very easily passed on this one, as the original releases were superior in the paint app department. A twenty dollar replacement figure over a 65 dollar and up on the secondary market replacement sure is nice on the wallet, especially when the Hockey mask is finally accurate to the one Richard Brooker wore on screen in the film.

That said, I feel I should mention really quickly that the heads from the previous releases are interchangeable with this one, with a skin tone that better matches the ultimate figure than the ones NECA included with this one. The mask fits on the heads from the original releases as well. Since the figure comes with two masks, they can be easily swapped onto the original figures to give those figures a upgrade, allowing you to keep the Ultimate figure in the box as a "Break in case of" in the event on of your originals should take a fall.

I personally didn't run into loose hips here. They were fairly tight. Enough so that I eased them into some of the first poses before they loosened up a bit. I can't compare the joints to the original, as I don't have either of those two.

Mine should arrive tomorrow in the mail. I missed out on the first Jasons back in 2012 and since the online prices are stupid I'm more than happy to accept inferior paint compared to previous releases if it means I can finally have a classic Jason to go with the Jason Lives zombie look.

Yeah I don't really agree with all of this statement. The loose hips on the part VI aren't even worth comparing to this version. Not even remotely the same. Cartoony paint is a stretch too, considering the original had a very flat(more tan)color with virtually no breakup in tone. Also, "missed opportunity" you're crazy!

I own nearly every Jason figure, I can tell you first hand that this is the definitive Jason figure. The accessories alone will improve your NECA F13 collection, and the paint is pretty damn good. Things like the discolorations in the pants and bloody axe cut make it stand out like it should.
The packaging is stellar, the price is very good, and the mask is killer! YES, THEY GOT THE MASK RIGHT
What else can you say, look at the pics(great pics by the way) The mask alone(IMO) make this figure a great piece.

If you want a killer Jason figure, this is the one to get!

Overall, this is a great deal for people who missed the original releases. I'd pick it up but I already have both the regular and battle-damaged figures, which brings me to a question for Trivial Psychic- the new mask is altered from the original release? The eyes look bigger to be sure, but otherwise is it that big of an deal in your opinion? I'm not sure if it would be worth the money to pick up this set and swap out the old masks for the new ones. I'm leaning towards no, because I like the additional gore on the old battle damaged mask, but I know you're a total Jason guy so I'm curious what you think.

And yeah, I have to agree, the paintjob on this one is a noticeable downgrade from the original figure. Definitely more simple and cartoony, and the gore is lessened as well. Also, having the bloody neck really makes the figure look odd when you're displaying it with the non-bloody head/mask. Like Joe said (fun photo shoot, BTW!), they should have modded the figure to allow you to swap necks somehow.

Here's a shot of my original battle-damaged version from back in the day...look at the additional/more realistic blood (especially on the mask) as well as the dirt and grime on his clothing. It looks much better. That said, however, I have to repeat that if you don't have the figures already, this new Ultimate version sure as hell beats blowing EvilBay money.

The new mask is much different. The eye holes are the most noticeable difference, but it also has rubber straps. I replaced my original non battle damaged Jason mask with this newer mask, and display the Ultimate as the bloody version. Also, the paint varied like crazy on that original release. Yours looks way different than my original one.

I don't think it's a crazy suggestion at all to say that it's a missed opportunity. There are several little things about this "Ultimate" that bug me. I have no gripes about the accessories, or the mask (especially...because they finally got the size and shape of it correct, and after seeing the prototypes, I was worried they wouldn't...) but the figure itself just left me feeling like the budget for this figure was "sloppy seconds" to the full blown treatments that the Evil Dead and NOES figures have been receiving.

The paints on this figure are bad when compared to the original versions, with skin tones on the arms and neck not matching those on the hands or heads due to the heavy washes on those parts. The blood treatment on the shirt, as well as the head and neck, is okay for the most part, but on the pants, it looks ridiculous...looking more like Jason spilled kool-aid on his leg as opposed to having been stabbed by Christie in the knee. Look at the picture on the inside of the box flap next to the figure tray, and then compare it to the figure, and you'll see what I mean as to how it should look. NECA also failed to paint Jason's white undershirt for some reason, something that was painted on the original releases. It also would have been nice to have an extra outstretched hand for the axe scene finale, as well as an extra gripping hand so he could properly hold the axe and and pitchfork with two hands like the Zombie Jason could. A removable neck piece similar to what NECA did with the T1000 figures would also be awesome like the reviewer stated. I'm reading that not everyone is having the hip issues like my figure did, which means I might have got a bad one, but one thing I will credit is that this one does feel less fragile in my hands and more durable than the previous figures.

I also have nearly every Jason figure out there from NECA, McFarlane, Mezco, as well as a couple of Sideshows, save for the giant sized ones, and when it comes to the definitive version, I still feel it's NECA's bloody Jason from "The Final Chapter," but on that point, it's all just a matter of opinion really. I know that I'm being really nitpicky on the figure...but that's just my passion for the F13 series as a whole (I even named my son after various characters in the series...) but I just want to see Jason treated with the same kind of love that many of NECA's other horror franchises are being treated, and I just don't see it.

The mask is WAY different and is a 100 percent improvement. The mask on the older figures was flattened, with the eye sockets being too small, as well as the mask itself. The mask also didn't have the holes drilled out very well on the original release either. NECA has fixed all of those issues, and this for sure looks like the original vacuformed 1950's Detroit Red Wings mask used in the film. Since you asked about the bloody ones, here's a comparison of the two below.

As you can see, in addition to the new size and shape of the mask finally being correct, NECA did do a much better job with it, especially on the bloody version, as it also has a darker weathered color with drybrushing details, as well as the damaged center chevron, which was something the original damaged mask did not. It's a much improved appearance.

Like I mentioned earlier, my passion for the series is forcing me to nitpick, but I'm just being honest. Is this new figure the Ultimate? No...not really. Would I recommend the figure if you don't have one already? Absolutely. Would I recommend the figure even if you have the originals? Again, absolutely. The new weapon additions and mask improvements are great (I love the wrench,) and are all compatible with the original releases if you prefer them, and if you need a Jason to pose and play around with for photos, this is a safe, cheaper (and I feel more durable) alternative to dropping big bucks on the secondary market for the originals. I hope this figure sells well (my local TRU is already sold out of them, so that's a good sign) so that perhaps we can get an Ultimate Baghead, or Roy, or Reboot,...hell...maybe even an Uber Jason in the near future.

I see your point with the undershirt, I noticed that myself. That's a really small gripe though.
As much as I love the part IV Bloody Jason, they didn't match the color of the wrists to the hands. So you can say the same thing about the version you call definitive. I would say that the non bloody part IV is actually better. The wrists do match on that version.
It sounds like your a F13th diehard, and thaf I can appreciate. Just saying, look at this new figure, and compare it with all your Jasons, this will blow most away. This(IMO)is the best Jason mask to date on a figure. That alone nails it. I'm glad they took extra time on it, well worth the delay.
    If anybody has the original version part 3 non bloody. You must buy this! Toss the old mask, pop this new one on. Here's comparison pictures I took below of the original part 3 Jason with the old mask, then with the new mask;

Totally. I was just looking at it on my shelf, and while there's a big difference between the bloody and non-bloody Part 3 figures, does Part 4 really need a "bloody" version? The regular release is already pretty bloodied up as it is. Hell, here's a shot of both figures side-by-side and you can barely tell the difference:

Nice comparison shots! And just in case anyone was curious, here's a dead-on shot of Jason from the movie to use when judging which NECA mask is truly the best. Honestly, and maybe it's just me, but the new NECA mask STILL looks off...the movie mask appears to be longer/more oval. Plus, while the eye holes on the original NECA mask were indeed too small, the holes on the new mask appear to actually be almost a little too big. Totally screen accurate probably would have been somewhere in-between the old and new masks, perhaps?

And, for giggles, here's a shot of MY original, non-bloody Part 3 Jason. For some reason this particular mask actually looks a little more accurate to the movie (at least at the bottom...alas, it widens and warps towards the top). It's really a subjective, nit-picky thing all-around as to which one is really the best, really.

In-hand, I will say that there is an issue with the flesh-colored paint on the head not matching the paint on the neck and hands. It's not a subtle difference, it's pretty drastic, actually.

Otherwise, I think the Ultimate figure holds up well to the original releases, aside from how off the bloody neck looks when displaying the non-bloody head on it. It's a great value, especially considering how expensive the battle damaged OG release is on ebay right now.

I can't disagree with the notion that the mask looks great on the figure. Even if my old bloody version had not broke, I would have picked up the Ultimate just to hijack parts off of it.

As for the hands being discolored on the bloody Final Chapter, I did notice that, and honestly, I got nothing there. I always just imagined that they were differently colored due to the grime from all of the slaughter he had done up to that point. I mean...he did crush that kid's head against the shower wall, and I'm sure something had to has splash out of poor Crispin Glover's head when he took the cleaver to it. Right? Lol...

There is a difference between the bloody and non bloody final chapter figures, and while not significant, it's enough to make me think that an Ultimate of this figure could eventually be on the horizon. The stock photos of that figure show blood all over both figures, but on the original FC (Final Chapter) figure, it's actually fairly clean, with the only blood on the figure being on his head from the axe wound. The bloody FC figure has blood all over it however (and done rather well I might add...with realistic tones of maroon, copper and brown to simulate dried blood) as well as a bit more dirt and grime on the hands and pants. Both figures come with different accessories, and have different headsculpts. The bloody version has a different facial expression, as well as a wound on the side of his face where Tommy blasts him with the machete in the film's finale. The wound is also large enough to fit the machete in case you want to relive that scene.

And if anyone is wondering, the heads from the FC figures fit on the new Ultimate with no retooling needed, although the pants color would be inaccurate if you did, because apparently Jason swapped pants with someone between the time of his battle with Christie and his waking up in the morgue.

Good points on the mask...I've thought about that myself. The new mask on the ultimate looks to be an amalgamation of three different masks, the part 3 (colors and design,) part 8 (the shape and placement of eyeholes) and the reboot (overall contours and shape). The mask also might look a bit different too simply because we can see Jason's eyes in the original film, something that wasn't quite so easy to do or even possible in the sequels, and that factor alone can give the mask an entirely different appearance, as it plays into the trickery that comes with lights and shadows.

Interestingly enough...after taking a closer look at the mask on the Ultimate, and one of my full sized NECA made masks (Video Game Version,) it's nearly the same, exact build. Perhaps NECA used a hyper scaled down version of that mold...

Yeah, you're right...more significant differences between the bloody/non-bloody Part 4 figures than the stock photo displays. And the battle damaged fig came with those decapitated heads he can lug around? Cool.

All that being the case, I'd love it if NECA did an Ultimate Part 4 figure as well, as the battle damaged version, while less pricey than it's Part 3 counterpart, is still going for stupid dough on the secondary market.

BTW...MAN, is the unmasked head of Jason from Part 4 one of the most horrific and downright menacing versions of him ever. It's really only rivaled by his unmasked look in Part 7, IMO.

The decapitated heads came with the Headless Horseman from the McFarlane Sleepy Hollow line. I've always liked using them in set ups with various horror figures.

After looking through my figures, I'd have to say the most accurate part 3 mask goes to the Revoltech Jason...which is an awesome figure, and has a TON of accessories, including a diorama piece, but it's far from perfect, as the scale is all over the place. Look at the size of those hands and weapons!

Part 4 is probably my favorite appearance of Jason under the mask, as it is truly ghastly, maybe even more so than his Zombie appearances. That is a dude I would not want to meet in the woods at night.

I still say the NECA part 3 is the best. The Revoltech version would be better if it looked like the prototype, i.e the pictures on the box. That mask isn't even close to matching the prototype. I have that one as well, it falls a little short on the mask IMO.

So my Jason finally arrived in the mail earlier today and my streak of reliably buying figures online ended as he had two left feet and the actual left foot was crazy loose, like it made the part VI Jason hips seem pretty tight. I went to TRU and was able to pick up a replacement so I can now actually comment on the proper figure. I really like it and am very glad to finally have a classic Jason in my collection as up until now the only modern figure of Jason I had was last year's ultimate part VI Jason. The bloody paint apps on the skin are pretty weak compared to how well NECA handles blood on other figures but it's not terrible either. The contrast between the head skin tone and the neck skin tone is pretty apparent but overall it isn't really detracting to the looks department in my opinion. The masks are great and the accessories are a fun little arsenal so at the end of the day I'm very forgiving of the cumulative shortcomings. I do still think I prefer the overall look of the zombie Jason figure more as the sculpt and paint are stronger but none of the joints on this part III figure are nearly as loose as part VI's hips (which in all fairness didn't really hurt that figure much since he's still standing fine).

For this last picture I just thought about the fact that somehow becoming a rotting corpse actually fixed Jason's teeth.

Bummer, but at least you were able to get a replacement. And yeah, that hip problem with the VI Jason was annoying and apparently widespread throughout the release. Did NECA ever address it, as far as you know?

Yeah, I still maintain that the blood effects on this figure pale compared to how they were on the original release...looking at them both now, you can see that the gore on the original battle damaged version's head ends in a fine spray of blood, whereas on the new Ultimate figure it's large dollops that almost look like it was finger painted. Still, as you said, it's not terrible.

Honestly, my Part VI hasn't fallen once. Aside from an ever-so-slight backwards lean, he stands just fine.

By this point he had sequel money and could afford a good orthodontist.

I remember some people on Twitter couldn't stand the loose hips and Randy said that if they contacted the NECA_CS account they could get a replacement figure sent but it wouldn't surprise me if those hips were no better. I think the problem was fairly consistent in the factory on account of how many people experienced the issue but (as we keep saying) it doesn't truly hurt the figure's display value.

Yeah my Jason Lives has never fallen in almost a year and I just have him standing upright with no support. I have him fully upright so his hips can't go any further back.

Jason obviously had a will with clear instructions that an orthodontist fix up his mouth so he'd look good for his funeral (he thought he'd have one).
