Overall
The concept Chewbacca mini-bust comes in Gentle Giant’s standardized Star Wars bust packaging. The black box features a few photos of the included bust. The rear of the box includes a quick history lesson on the origins of the concept chewie bust, showing the original artwork and sketches. The bottom of the box showcases the edition number. As the one that Gentle Giant sent doesn’t appear to count towards the 400 being offered, this one is listed as “0 of 400”. Once opened, you’ll be treated the the collectible card which also acts as a certificate of authenticity and also features your edition number. The styrofam box has nicely molded Star Wars logo on it.
No assembly is required, and the Chewbacca bust is ready to display right out of the box. It is cast in polystone, so it’s got a nice weight to it. Gentle Giant took great care in matching the features as closely as possible to the pre-production art. The original sketches of Chewie were meant to invoke a lemur-like creature, and the bust certainly has those qualities. The bright, large yellow eyes really pop against the more muted colors of the fur, vest and bandolier. The overall sculpt is stellar, with some great little details in the vest and ammo belts. The fur is nicely detailed as well, with a nice contrasting texture compared to the gloves, vest and rifle. The paint work is strong here, with nice gradations and soft washes to add depth and bring out the sculpted details. The weapons have a nice metallic paint to them adding to the nice overall look.
If you have any of the previous Gentle Giant Ralph McQuarrie Concept Busts, then this is going to fit in nicely. We want to thank Gentle Giant for letting us share in the fun.
