New Behind The Scenes Look at NECA Stalker Predator

Posted on June 22, 2016 at 9:58 am by Joe Moore under Aliens and Predator Toy News

Predator Series 16 is now scheduled for release this October. Included in the line up is the Kenner inspired glow-in-the-dark Stalker Predator. NECA shared a new behind the scenes look at the figure, which shows off all of the accessories that will be included.

The 16th series of our longest running figure collection is an homage to the classic Kenner Expanded Universe Predators of the early 1990s!

Series 16 includes Spiked Tail, Stalker and Ghost. Taking inspiration from those designs, our team has applied modern sculpting, detail and articulation to upgrade these vintage Predators for the new millennium. Each Predator comes with character-specific accessories, removable masks, and Stalker glows in the dark just as the original figure did! These highly detailed figures stand approximately 8″ tall and feature nearly 30 points of articulation.

The special blister card packaging is an homage to the classic card art as well, featuring custom illustrations and a color palette that ties back to the toy shelves of the early ’90s.

Usually in most toy waves, certain figures are packed per case in higher or lower numbers for whatever reason. Certain characters will be two or three per case, whereas others can be as little as one per case. We're hoping Ghost will be a one-per-case kinda guy in this instance.

That would be Stalker with the whip, not Ghost.

No thanks, I personally wish one-per-case figures would go the way of the dodo. This archaic practice still occurs far too much, and it's an unnecessary stress to collectors and children alike everywhere.

That said, even though he's not based off of any particular Kenner Predator, I kinda dig Ghost. I like the bio-helmet design and the paint deco in particular.

Well thankfully no Predator toy is ever one-per-case but somebody is always packed less than the others which means that that's the one you can't pre-order on its own from BBTS.

The Kenner one didn't, it was just that its dreads were really long and tied together at the end with a spiked club.

Oh man Leader looks super sweet. I was interested in the Kenner updates back when NECA started them, and I'm currently kicking myself for not picking up Nightstorm when he came out because I think he'd be a great enemy to display with Leader. With him being a Super Predator Elder and all.

But oh well, I'm getting Leader as my first NECA Kenner-Pred now, and he’s amazing. NECA really knocked it out of the park with this one. Not that the others were bad, but I think this is the best one yet.

And I think NECA will do the same with this one; you can see the spiked club hanging from his back in the Toy Fair display.

Spiked Tail is also pretty great looking by the way, I really like his half-masked look. Gives me a Star Wars Bounty Hunter-vibe for some reason.

Is Spiked Tail supposed to be a cyborg, or just a really high-tech dude like the Battle Armor Lost Predator?

Also, is anyone privy to the logic behind what figures are over/under-packed in any given action figure wave? Is it based on anticipated popularity/demand or just a flip of a coin?

We don't know, unless NECA says something about this in the new bio they'll make for him I'd say that's up for your imagination to decide

A mix of both probably. Ghost is not that impressive looking compared to Spiked Tail and Stalker, and his original toy was some sort of exclusive I think. At least he wasn't part of the regular line-up.

    Welcome to the Ark.
I have a hypothesis that NECA might say in Leader's bio that maybe he's the guy who beat Nightstorm and thus earned his leader status, since Nightstorm's bio is basically described as the first and original killer of predators (like their Sauron) in ancient times so what with Leader here clearly being ancient himself their stories could intertwine.

Yeah I had a similar idea I played around with. Basically that Leader killed Nightstorm and cast out the other Super Predators who followed him which created their eternal feud.

Since Nightstorm lived 4000 years ago, I kind of want to imagine Leader survived and is alive in the present timeline, maybe even in Warhammer 40K Emperor Style – with a life support system similar to the Golden Throne, but Leader can awaken and leave the throne again if necessary.

I kind of want Darkhorse or whoever has the license currently to tackle this story. One part starring Nightstorm and Leader in the past, the other with Scavage, Renegade and their teacher Broken Tusk in the present. And of course other Kenner Preds as side characters. Obviously won’t happen, but still.

The same character, the Clan Leader. I would post a picture but I'm not allowed to yet, just google "Kenner Clan Leader".

Yup. They said it fits him more because he's supposed to be bigger than the other Kenner Preds.

Honestly though, seeing the torso articulation on Clan Leader makes me question why they don’t use that style of articulation going forward. They said they only do it for the AvP Preds because their armor conceals the gap between the upper and lower torso, but seeing it on Leader here where you have no chest armor to cover it up I think it looks okay. Certainly not bad enough to not incorporate this extra point of articulation with future Predator figures.

Spiked Tail back shown. He has the ponytail club!

Re: upgrading the non-AVP bucks with ab joints. I feel like it'd be too much new tooling and money spent for very little difference. I definitely don't like how some people are saying to use the AVP bucks flat out for Jungle Hunter since they have distinctly different designs and builds.

I'm really digging these new figures. I know people aren't digging Ghost but personally I love it. The colors and mask styling are great and I love the new disc holder. As much as I love the Kenner homages I always felt they were a but over-designed, though absolutely cool. I really like the more standard or basic Predator styling with interesting details. Speaking of his mask, has anyone noticed it's basically Ahab's mask with the moth section filled in and some other retooling?

The Clan Leader is bad-ass, and I love the way they used the tendrils so they are removable and re-attachable to his arms. VERY nice.

Stalker is awesome,. I love his armor colors though I'll be looking more to his repaint.

Spike Tail is very cool, though I'm not as into it.

BTW, we're getting ultimate City and Jungle hunters, my hope there is for retooled arms at least. Double jointed elbows and forearm gauntlet rotation. I don't care about mid-torso joints like the AVP figures. I just want better arms. Well...better paints, interchangeable heads, interchangeable hands with closed fists for the right hands, splayed hands and hands for holding spears and trophy skulls and oh, opening arm computers and for ONCE I want City Hunter to have a removable net launcher that he can hold. I don't care if they need to include a net launcher with the hand molded into it to swap the hands, I just want a net launcher he can hold, lol.

Well, I was actually directing that question to anyone who might be familiar with the original Kenner figure. I assume those figures had backstories? Maybe?

  22. En Sabah Nerd's Avatar En Sabah Nerd says

So upon further looking at Spiked Tail's back image I've noticed a couple of things. His rights gauntlet looks like it might just literally be the same as his left gauntlet but without the peg hole for the cannon. Speaking of the cannon, it looks like the end might be on a ball-hinge which could make it possible that when stored on his back you could bend it and it would serve as a regular shoulder cannon.

@ Straker: I don't dislike Ghost but he isn't doing enough to distinguish himself, especially among the other Kenner predators. I do agree that it is groovy that a Jungle hunter figure is being given a disc holder. I understand using the words "over-designed" to describe the Kenner predators as a whole because, well, Kenner but actually Stalker, Spiked Tail, and Leader are the first three from NECA that I'd say really embrace the excess of their '90s designs. Every other Kenner homage figure so far has mainly been a repaint with a few new armor pieces here or there, these three display a lot of new stuff in comparison. Stalker has almost nothing but new armor (which better damn well be used for a comic Broken Tusk!), Spiked Tail has a bunch of new armor bits slapped over some existing pieces as well as what is a mostly new head and his weapons, and Leader has his back piece and tentacles. I guess my point is that Cracked Tusk has a much easier time blending with movie figures than these three ever will.

Oh, I agree. Ghost is basic. Stands right in with Renegade and Cracked Tusk or City and Jungle Hunter or any of the other basic standard equipped Predators...but I think that's why I like it. I just really appreciate it a lot more than others. It's a simple retool with an effective recolor. Kinda reminds me of pretty much all of the Lost Clan in that way.

As for the others, I still think they are great and I'll be getting them all...okay MAYBE not Stalker. I want to get that one in a fully painted figure and while Spiked Tail isn't my favorite, I do love me some Kenner Predator Tribute. This entire line has been like crack to me.

    In order of preference...

Leader - The design work is just phenomenal here
Ghost - It's a basic design, but it's flawless as a result IMO
Spiked Tail - Love the little touches around the back and the gun
Stalker - GITD makes it look cheap somehow and only the whip works IMO

I'll still be buying all of them, cos I might as well at this point! I'll have a real decision to make once they re-release the AvP:R figures - my god that film was dire.

Which Preds would you like to see next? Apart from the obvious Kenner ones that complete the line, I'd like to see versions from the Batman Versus Predator comics assuming that wouldn't be a legal nightmare. But especially the one-armed Pred from BvP 3 that they chickened out with, and who somehow grew it back towards the end of the run!
