The S.H. Figuarts Dragonball Z galleries are officially caught up today with a look at Super Saiyan Trunks! Trunks just released in Asia and is making his way into the hands of collectors now, due to drop in the US soon. This new Trunks is the upgraded version from the Cell Saga, showing his beefed up frame and training armor from the Hyperbolic Time Chamber. The traditional Saiyan armor from his father gives us another perfect Father/Son lineup option. Let’s take a look courtesy of site sponsor The Toy Source!

S.H. Figuarts Dragonball Z Super Saiyan Armor Trunks
Overall
Hmm. Torn on this one. Saiyan Armor Trunks – awesome. SS SG hair, awesome. Long regular purple hair, awesome. New tech in the legs – should be awesome, but not quite. The new crotch tech bothers me.
The legs come up, and layer over the piece that eventually plugs into the hips. From a distance, that’s fine, it’s functional and from a pure functionality standpoint – they are better. However, this style of leg articulation bugs the heck outta me. It looks like he has armor on top of his legs, and that they end at the upper thigh. Doesn’t quite work for fabric or spandex based looks. If this was a military guy or metal plated armor styled look, it wouldn’t be that big a deal. But anything that’s supposed to be streamlined, a single piece of fabric, no good. Same would apply to Batman, Superman, etc. Example – Fine | Weird. Same goes here. Functionally – they are way better than previous Vegeta legs. Can hold a pose, don’t detach from the crotch piece and leave gaps. Oh, and the plastic color is slightly different between all those pieces, so that’s another distraction.
The new tech in chest / torso is good too, allowing for some range in posing, though I didn’t really come across major uses for it. It offers a slight increase in poseability.
The head uses a different size peg from most other figures, a bigger ball joint. So this head won’t swap to other bodies and work. Nor will original Trunks’ head work on this body. I hope that was functionally necessary because otherwise it’s a d*** move. If you fold down the peg, you can balance other heads on there, I did so with Goku in the shoot below and it mostly works. But if you bump him, it’s rolling off.
One other nitpick – the standard serious face, non angry, eyes are painted to look sideways. So not straight on serious face in Super Saiyan mode.
Bottom line, I’m really happy to have a SS Trunks in Saiyan Armor, but the legs and head peg take it down from being great. Still worth a pick up tho!
