Behind The Scenes Look at NECA’s Pacific Rim Mutavore

Posted on August 10, 2015 at 9:10 pm by Joe Moore under Robot and Mecha Toy News

Back at San Diego Comic-Con 2015, we got our first look at NECA‘s newest Pacific Rim Kaiju; the ultra-deluxe Mutavore! Today they have shared a cool behind the scenes image. It shows off some detailed images and a look at the articulation breakdown. Here’s more info on Mutavore straight from NECA:

From the epic Pacific Rim movie, our newest boxed, ultra-deluxe kaiju action figure is Mutavore!

Just when the world thought that the alien invasion was over, this Category IV kaiju emerged from the breach and easily broke through Sydney’s Anti-Kaiju Wall. At over 8” tall and over 6” wide, Mutavore is massive – larger than the previously released Trespasser, Scunner and Knifehead! This movie-accurate figure utilizes 100% new tooling, features over 30 points of articulation, and is to scale with our Jaeger action figures.

Release Date: November 2015

Read on to see the new images.

I'll wait for Hardship, who should be quite smaller than Mutavore here. I like just about all of the PR Kaiju but Mutavore ranks lower for me because he is perhaps too weird. His eyes are on the side of his head and positioned beneath his mouth, he has a scissor tail, and he has those blade-shaped protrusions on his back. He's fascinating to look at but I prefer the more animal kaiju like Otachi the lizard-bat and Leatherback the gorilla.

I want Mutavore to go with the new Striker coming.

I almost wish they would remake Leatherback. For some reason I feel like he is smaller than he should be.

Leatherback is the right size, he is one of the shorter kaiju featured in the film. His category 4 rating comes from his weight and bulk. If they did a Leatherback v2 it could only really benefit paint. His articulation is limited on the existing toy but his fat gorilla body doesn't leave much room for improvement. NECA has repeatedly said on Twitter that if they do anything further with Leatherback it'll just be more re-releases.

I would be happy with a re release of Leatherback. I could never bring myself to buy the first because I did not like the damaged Gypsy it came with.

It was released as an individual figure in series 2 but distribution apparently sucked and then they did the two pack which is how I got mine, some people say the two pack version actually has better paint but I'm not sure. I am way happier with it than I should be given its lack of pose options but it just looks so good especially next to Otachi, they make a happy couple. A re-release would be nice for those who missed out but still want the figure and it would be an opportunity for upgrading the paint on his teeth. In the movie his chompers are clearly bone colored but the toy has them as the same dark bluish color as the rest of him, not a real issue but a nitpick I'll point out. His ebay prices are stupid, I'm genuinely amazed that I found a small toy store that had two mint in box and only wanted $30 for each.

I was always more reminded of the Bioraptors from Pitch Black, just the head being that crescent shape and the weird lankiness of the rest of it.
