MattyCollector Talks Snake Mountain, Subs, Power-Con and Thundercats

Posted on July 21, 2015 at 9:13 am by Joe Moore under Masters Of The Universe Toy News, Thundercats Toy News

Over at the MattyCollector Forums, MattyCollector’s own Skeletor’s Love Child posted an update on some questions, comments and concerns stemming from San Diego Comic-Con. Here’s what he had to say:

Hi guys,

We haven’t been ignoring you, it’s more like everyone has been trying to get caught up and back into the regular groove now that Comic Con is over. I’ve seen a few reoccurring questions on the boards so rather than post to the individual threads I thought it would be best to list all the answers here.

Filmation Subscription
The enrollment period for this subscription will begin in October. This sub (like Collector’s Choice) will ship every other month starting in February 2016 and you will be able to receive your products bi-monthly or use the Triple Play option. You can expect lower prices for this line as well. :)

Combining Subscriptions
We are actively working with the team at Digital River to try to make this happen. I’m fully aware of the costly shipping fees, and would like to make things easier for you if possible.

Slides From the Presentation
I will make most of the slides available, some need to be held back for legal purposes.

Power Con Exclusives
Honestly we saw this as a good opportunity to support the He-Man.org crew and Power Con, and help promote the Masters brand to a wider audience. While I know this does not make everyone happy, this is simply one of those times where we will have to “agree to disagree.”

Thundercats
They’re going to be awesome. Period.

The enrollment period for this particular subscription won’t be until early 2016, and the first figure (Lion-O) won’t ship until July 2016. The full lineup will be revealed and yes, you will be pleased. :) There will be a good mix of heroes, villains and allies…seriously I think you’re going to love it.

Snake Mountain
It is gorgeous and magnificent and full of awe and wonder….and going to be resized lol. Seriously, we had no idea it was going to be that huge and while we love everything about it (and we know you do too) we’re going to scale it down between 10-20%. We want you to be able to display this beautiful beast proudly in your homes without having to build a separate room or sell one (or two) of your organs on the black market, and scaling down is the most effective way to make this happen. Oh, and to those of you who were wondering about how the Blue Tooth feature figures into the cost: it was actually cheaper to do the Blue Tooth than the microphone, like a lot cheaper.

Transparency
It was the word of the day at the Mattypalooza panel and it’s still very much alive and well in the office. However let me say this: though we are committed to keeping you guys updated and in the know about what’s going on with the line there are still some things we can’t (and won’t ) divulge due to legal and company policies. Will you know things such as the full lineup of characters in a subscription, cool things coming down the pipeline, or if product will be delayed? Yes. Will you have full access to the inner workings of Mattel and the labyrinth of policies behind making your product, or have answers the exact moment decisions are made? Probably not. Have patience with us; I know it doesn’t seem like it but we have your best interests at heart. :)

I know I always seem to troll the Matty posts, and I kind of do, but this makes no sense to me:

Did they suddenly forget how to combine subscriptions or something? They've been doing it for years.

Oh yeah, kind of messed up with that bait and switch they are pulling with Snake Mountain. Did they even say at the convention itself that the actual product would be smaller?

They talk about Snake Mountain as if it's a statue that requires shelf space. Isn't it going to be a PLAY SET, kinda like how Castle Grayskull is a PLAY SET??? When the castle is open up, it barely fits on most shelves, but now suddenly the size of Snake Mountain is a huge issue. Mattel really needs to stop bullshiting the fans. They want it smaller while keeping the price high, it's called business as usual. The price excuse is just lame, they say they also want to reduce the size to make it affordable, meanwhile most fans would pay $400-$500 for it no matter how big, or small it is. LOL! Truth is it's a size, cost to make versus profit margins issue.

Regarding the Digital River response, It's pretty much the same thing Neitlich used to say over and over again, only slightly different. After 8 years of the same empty promises, they should probably just come clean and say, "Yeah, we know about the problems with Digital River, but it is what it is and were sticking with them." That would at least be more straight forward.

About Snake Mountain, They did say it was going to be reduced in size at SDCC BUT they never said by how much until recently. It's like some kind of precognitive damage control. I don't buy into the reasons given for such a drastic size reduction of 10-20%.

For what it's worth, the tone of Skeletor's Love Child's post seems more sincere than the typical snarky responses from Toy Guru.

Combining shipping shouldn't even be an issue at this point. Troubling that Digital River seems to struggle with this.

I'm not terribly surprised that we have official confirmation that Snake Mountain will be reduced in size. I know it was said during the con, but seems more official now. Would have been nice to keep it that size, though. Same thing happened to Grayskull and that thing is still huge.

Is buying the subscription the only way to get the TCats figures or is it similar to MOTUC where you can still get them, if available, on their website as well?

Some will be released to buy online, while some characters, like Mummy Mumm-Ra, will be sub only exclusives.

Wow thank god they changed lion-o's head sculpt. Yikes! I forgot just how ugly the original was!

One question; Where the hell is Snake Mountain? It's in the latter part of 2016 now and thry are talking about closing doors
