MASK, Micronauts, Action Man and More Being Revived by Hasbro

Posted on July 20, 2015 at 9:42 am by Joe Moore under General Toy News

Our good friend Silver Optimus covered the Hasbro Q2 Financial Call with the investors and media. They talk about a lot of thing, but big news for toy fans came in the form of a slide showing upcoming brand revivals. Among the revivals were

  • M.A.S.K.
  • Micronauts
  • Stretch Armstrong
  • Action Man

We reported on the possible revival of M.A.S.K. back in December. Not much was shared about the revival of these properties, but we’ll keep our eyes peeled for new info. For more detaisl on the call, check out the stories on TFW2005 and HissTank.

GI Joe is still ongoing; hence, there's no need to "revive" it.

*EDIT* Duuh, now I see what you mean. It's not even listed in the "Franchise Brands" section.

I wonder what that means? They have new Joes hitting stores next month, and Hasbro has been talking about attempting to make the brand viable at retail once again. Hmm.

GI Joe isn't even listed under their franchise brands on the slide.

Yeah, I just caught that. See my edit up above.

I think the problem is that no one there has any idea how to properly handle the GI Joe franchise to get enough kids and adults to like a single focused line. They need to get younger people into the brand, but we all know doing so is going to alienate the older collectors. And kids clearly have no interest in the "collectors friendly" items they've tried to put out.

If they bring M.A.S.K. back, they could use it for bringing GI Joe back more too. Those two properties always felt like a great interconnection point. They did play with some possibilities of it over in Human Alliance transformers too as well as those non robot form transforming vehicles too. M.A.S.K. as a GI Joe splinter group could do well to boost both properties and maybe start helping to establish a unified Hasbro universe.

Part of the problem with GI Joe is as Joe Moore said. Finding a way to make it interesting to kids, but I think Hasbro is underestimating themselves. They have the potential to do that from something that was in Renegades. At least one wave of the Cyber Ninjas like Jinx from the cutting edge episode might really catch kids' eyes and collectors are known for being interested in the offshoots like that. It also fits to their classic era like the colorful ninja wave they did back in the day. From there, they can build on that sub-line and maybe even bring back the Ashiko Bike mold which could play to more diverse sensibilities. The colorful nature to that kind of line as well as the designs, and the gear could really play up well to both kids and collectors. But one problem to it is that it'd need a media push somehow. For kids at least, the property would need a media presence in some manner. Even if it's only a cameo over in one of the other shows. So I'd honestly suggest having M.A.S.K. connected to renegades to allow for that would be a great idea. Like a 10 years after.

Micronauts has been on the drawing board for awhile too. There's supposed to be a movie and new cartoon series at some point. That's been in the works since right before the Hub days.

I think the fact that they haven't nailed down GI Joe popularity lately will severely affect MASK's new line. If Joe was already popular, MASK would be an instant hit I would think. The good news about MASK is there is a good chance we'll get a new show out of it. Fingers crossed on that one.

Im trying to work out what the Action Man brand means, this is what GI Joe was called in the UK in the 60s, 70s and 80s, not sure how its relevant with the GI Joe brand out as well

I hope its not that subpar version they tried to revive in the 90s

It's basically transformers and GI Joe combined. The transforming vehicles were the brands selling point, and they've been testing that with Human Alliance and other TF movie offshoots to see how well it could sell. A lot of M.A.S.K.'s appeal to kids is the vehicle interactions whereas with GI Joe it's more towards military stuff, and military stuff is currently on a downswing a little bit right now(which is why they need to go more unorthodox GI Joe sublines to experiment with those like they did in the 80s-90s when the same happened then).

Action Man is also a spy line, and had his own cartoon previously. That's probably the version they're going to expand on because spy things tend to do well in the current market. The whole stunt man by day but international spy by night could be an interesting fun property that covers a diverse area of figure interactions.

They've tried this one before, so I could see why they'd want to try again.

I hate to say it, but my guess is that Mask will be a side-shoot of the current 2.5" marvel stuff. I doubt they will be connected in anyway, but I feel like the scale will be the same. I just can't see Hasbro putting more money into a Vintage license than they have put into their Marvel one.

They said when they created this new scale that they wanted to have a scale where vehicles and playsets were more abundant, which sounds a lot like Mask if you ask me.

Let's hear some noise for the return of Micronauts!!!

About the missing Gi Joe franchise, weren't there some rumors about it getting relaunched as a 6" scale line? Maybe the grapevine rumblings were more than just idle speculation...although, a larger scale would make vehicles unlikely.

    Some notes to remember:
GI Joe hasn't been on that brand sheet for YEARS, not even when Retaliation was released.

Micronauts has been ON that page for several years now. So just because something is listed on that brand sheet, doesn't mean anything is going to happen anytime soon.
Stretch Armstrong has similarly been appear for several years now without anything to show for it.

Jem appeared last year as things started going for the new movie, as of yet, Hasbro hasn't talked about anything with the brand aside from the next range of collector dolls.

Doesn't Hasbro do this type of thing every once in a while? I think I read something like this at Hisstank, almost same reactions. And then there were no products released. Maybe they just want to renew their properties and trademarks, I don't know...

^or gauge fan reaction... unfortunately I think K Dub is right, Mask and probably Micronauts will likely be 2.5" and hell while there at it shift Gi joe that way as well. If they really want to revive a brand I suggest Marvel Universe 3.75" figures... just sayin.

I think that's just to screw with people because they also have Kre-o and I thought that line died a year ago when it became a TRU exclusive line. I still haven't seen the Kre-o Transformers Warrior sets or any of the new R.I.D. sets. But I'm in for Micronauts and M.A.S.K. if they are coming out again..
