Gentle Giant Reveals Jumbo Retro Marvel Secret Wars Figures

Posted on November 20, 2014 at 9:49 am by Joe Moore under Marvel Toy News

Gentle Giant is really expanding their Jumbo Retro Figure line in surprising and exciting ways. Marvel.com and Gentle Giant have revealed that the company will be taking the classic 1980’s Marvel Secret Wars Figures by Mattel, 3D scanning them and creating 12″ versions of the line. This is the same thing they are doing with G.I. Joe and have been doing with Star Wars. The figures will come in resealable card backers inspired by the original packaging design.

The first two figures revealed are Symbiote Suit Spider-Man and Hobgoblin, who are due in the 3rd quarter of 2015. A teaser image also shows silhouettes of Wolverine and Kang. You can pre-order the Spider-Man Here. Figures look to be priced at $90 each. Check out some photos by reading on.

Wow! Did not see this one coming. Can't say I'd buy them all, but the Iron Man, Captain America and Doctor Doom are must haves! They were some of my favorite figures growing up.

Wish someone would do this with Super Powers. But it would probably be Mattel and they'd probably charge $100+ for each figure. >ugh<

No thank you, not for me. Plus I bet they price is going to be high, well if people want this I hope they check out ebay for Toybiz toys from the 90s that were around this size. So who owns the original mold Marvel or Matell, do they have to share profits?

Wow. I'd buy Cap and Doom. But then I'd feel compelled to get IM, both Spidey's, Doc Ock, Wolvie, and Kang.

Wait...is that all of them (besides Hoblin)?

    This is very very cool!!
While I can live without these two, this is going to be hard to resist a Captain America or a Dr Doom figure...

Nostalgia my ass. For almost $100, I better get better than this....

Why not go full nostalgia and bring back the nostalgic price point too.

Marvel bought Toybiz which became Marvel toys early on therefore I conclude that Marvel is using the old Toybiz molds. Not sure how I feel about these as I prefer more than 5POA

I'm not sure there's much to conclude as it says how they're doing it right on the front page. Gentle Giant's process for creating these oversized versions of older figures is posted on every pre-order page they put up:

    Quote:
Digitally scanned from the original Mattel Secret Wars figures and reproduced in 12” scale, no detail has been overlooked. Roto and injection molded and made of durable plastics, this fully-articulated jumbo figure includes a faithfully re-produced lenticular shield.
They've been doing the same thing with the Star Wars figures for about a decade, and have been using the same technique on their upcoming GI Joe jumbo figures as well.
