Scott “Toy Guru” Neitlich Resigns From Mattel

Posted on October 18, 2014 at 11:12 pm by Joe Moore under DC Toy News, General Toy News, Masters Of The Universe Toy News

For the most part, I usually don’t report on the organizational personnel from assorted toy companies. Hirings, firings and shuffling occur all the time. However, some people work so closely with their customers that they become the face of the brand they represent. Such is the case with Scott Neitlich, aka Toy Guru, who, for nearly a decade, has been the personality fans and collectors thought of when they talked about MattyCollector. Yesterday, a report over at Action Figure Insider has revealed that Scott is no longer with MattyCollector. On Friday he had handed in his resignation with the company and is moving on to work with another toy company. The new company is not named.

AFI posted an audio interview and you can listen to it Here. Sounds like the MOTU figures revealed are still set for 2015, so no need to panic there.

You know, I know a lot of people will cheer and be happy about this, but I think Scott took a lot of crap over the years that was out of his control. He has bosses also. Now some stuff , and the way he would report it, was not the best, but I can not even imagine dealing with all the hate that got tossed his way.

My problem is not the bull**** Scott gave us, it was his lack of enthusiasm for DCU. He showed a lot of love and care for the MOTUC line, but did not care to give us that much for DCU.

I appreciate Scott Neitlich and most everything he did at Mattel. I'm really interested to know where he's going. Hopefully Hasbro so we can get some characters other than Iron Man and Captain America.

yeah well.. i don't think his bosses were the ones constantly telling him to blame the fans for not buying shit. the things he says, and just the way he comes off just screams total douche.

i didn't collect either the DC or MOTU figures.. (well, besides batzarro).. but i've heard TONS of people complaining about them.. and there's nothing i hate more than a subscription service.. to me, it just seems like the biggest load of BS ever. i wanted a lot of those ghostbuster figures, but i'm sure as hell not going to sign up for a subscription to get them.. and hell, i found all four of the 12" figures at big lots .. two per set for $30 each. and they came with all of the accessories you could ask for.

I doubt he'd be on anything Marvel. The reboot of Marvel Legends has been pretty successful leading me to believe that this individual (or group/team) is safe. I'm not really sure what the status is with Marvel Universe. It seems to also be doing well, but I don't follow the line and I'm not really certain. In addition, Star Wars seems to be enjoying a robust fan-base. Transformers? Well, Hasbro has listed an opening for the position Global Brand Manager. This may mean nothing, but there is a void that needs filling and he seems to fit the bill...

I cannot not imagine Hasbro would Hire him namely because being competition you need to kind of look over and see what they are doing. Hasbro would have to be thick to not see what happened at Mattel. In reality they would have to say Do we want to sell one Item and get a Profit in general or not sell anything and sit on a property. Over the last 2 years Scotts only Successful property has been Masters of the Universe. Everything else has failed weather it was directly his fault or not he will be blamed and Scapegoated. Much of what happened had a sent of Indifference from him, This is bad simply because the Customers will react to that and in the end it will result in either the Manager getting terminated (as I expected), asked to Resign (most likely), or Resigning on their own (what probably happened here) knowing that they would be forced out.

    @CMIII
You have followed this guy's exploits far more than I have, so I'll give you credit for being aware of the finer details of his time at Mattel. However, he did end on a very high note with the MOTUC line. That MOTUC subscription success may outweigh his misgivings with a niche base of DC comics fans. I'm not invested in MOTUC, but there are people referring to it as "the best toyline ever" on the web (Hyperbolic? For sure...). Additionally, I'm reading ALOT of praise and support for this dude on various sites. Don't get me wrong, the little I've read of his comments, specifically to DCUC fans (of which I am one), has betrayed him as insensitive (at times) to customers. Companies like Hasbro may decide that the pros outweigh the cons. But this is all just speculation on my part....

I honestly do not see Hasbro going his route. He'll likely go to a Smaller company. The problem with him going Hasbro is he brings the Baggage of what's happened at Mattel with him. And yes he has gotten a lot of Support but a lot of people won't say anything bad about him now that he's leaving. It's like a President nobody will say anything bad about them when they leave office unless they get impeached, Hell I am a Civil War Reenactor and was at an event in Easter Tennessee where they Had Andrew Johnston Days. People were Sparking about how he was one of the Greatest Presidents, but look at the facts. The man Assumed the Role when Abraham Lincoln got assassinated then after 3 years he was Impeached for basically abusing the power of the Office of the President. I think it's time to move on and take the next step to undo what damage has been do to the Customers and try and rebuild the support of the lost customers

They say he was head Hunted... In other words someone with big pockets went for him to do a job. He knew his future with Mattel was bleak. After 2015 there is nothing for him to do as opposed to being asked to resign he moved on, I honestly do not blame him for that what would anyone else do???? I know if a Company came to me and Said "Hey we know what you are doing with this company is coming to an end so we're going to give you X amount of money to start a line with us." I may not like the guy but he is doing the right thing and this will be beneficial for everyone.

Here is hoping unnamed new toy company doesn't make anything I like.

He will say the end of MOTUC happened because he left, that if he stayed the line would have continued forever.

Hey, maybe he was fighting them on making He-man stuff for retail, maybe those mini asters will make it to retail ha.

Which part? I was just messing around well aside from the part where I hope he doesn't go to any toy company/brand I like.

I wish Scott all the best in his new venture. I highly doubt he will be anywhere near a sub based modeled program since I am pretty sure he signed an NDA with Mattel. As much as people give him crap with his work at Matty, I think his fan interaction was superb. He knew the pulse of his target market. I kind of wish he was going to Hasbro to work on GI Joe to breath some fresh air into that mainline or Transformers...so I can have a fan wanted Trypticon to go toe to toe with my Metroplex.

I think a lot of people forget that outside of Zach at DST, most companies rarely let you know what they are doing or show you new product coming, outside of a show like Toyfare or SDCC. Yes Scott was very MOTU oriented, and only talked DC when he had to, but at least we got to see stuff. I listened to the 30 min interview that was posted with Scott and He just seems to have gotten an offer and decided to move on for his non toy life. He says he will be still working in the industry but not like he was at Matty.

I hope he ends uyp at some no name kids toy company where he belongs. Never cared for the guy. Hasbro wouldn't be so foolish as to pick him up either.

To be fair, the guy might have been a pompous ass, but he was the ONLY Person I see in the entire toy industry that is actually talking to fans, doing videos to promote new products on a constant basis, and answering their questions no matter how bs the answers were. I have to give him the credit for that as no one else, especially the jackmeoffs at Hasblow, do that.

I kinda sorda agree and disagree with Kain.

Sure he made the videos... but all the ones I saw was him begging for my money and trying to scare me if I didn't give him my money.
