Street Fighter Figure Kickstarter Update

Posted on August 4, 2014 at 8:50 am by Joe Moore under Video Game Toy News

Sculptor Rocco Tartamella has sent along an update on the status of Capo Toys and the Street Fighter Ryu Kickstarter Campaign. After Toy Fair, a legal dispute arose between Rocco and the other members of Capo Toys, in which the partners claimed ownership over Rocco’s work. You can read up on the original dispute at Little Plastic Men. However, Rocco has officially come to a legal settlement with his ex-partners and is now the sole owner of Capo Toys and all of their properties.

This is where the Kickstarter comes in. Capo Toys is in need of funding to get the line off the ground. They are looking for fans to help kick it off with the Ryu figure. They have also added a stretch goal that will fully fund the creation of Sagat as well. The Kickstarter has 16 days to go and is at $6,855 of the $85,000 needed to get this line going.

Capo Toys Announces Their Street Fighter Action Figure Series Live Via Kickstarter!

Capo Toys successfully debuted their first wave of Street Fighter Action Figures, sculpted by Rocco Tartamella, at Toy Fair earlier this year and was awarded the Best New Toy line of 2014 from InsidePulse.com. This series of highly articulated Street Fighter action figures features in game design, style and scale in a 6 to 9 inch range with select figures outfitted with micro fiber clothing for added detail and motion.
The first five have been prototyped, Ryu, Sagat, Guile, Blanka and Chun-Li, with plans to continue the full series of Street Fighter characters. Capo Toys is featuring Ryu as the first figure to be funded on Kickstarter. With the support of the Street Fighter community, we can make this happen in a big way! We are offering exclusive incentives available only to backers, so come out, support and be among the first to get them!

Wait...these things weren't a go to begin with and need a kickstarter?

*sighs. As a huge fan of the Street Fighter series, It pains me to say this...but I'm not dropping a single penny for yet another Ryu. At this point, it's like dropping a large sum of cash on another Snake Eyes, Iron Man, or Wolverine figure.

I know Ryu's important, and the most easily recognizable character, but if I had been in Capo Toy's shoes and was starting a kickstarter, as crazy as it would sound, I would have started with some characters that SOTA missed out on the first time around, like Deejay, Rolento, Rose, Juli, Charlie, and some of the newer characters such as Juri, Seth, and El Fuerte. I'm willing to bet that those of us with the holes in our collection from Sota's sudden demise would have been more than enough to get them up and running. But like other lines that have tried before it, I think this line either lives or dies with Ryu, and being that Ryu has been done as many times as he has, it's a steep hill to climb. Its a shame too, because the sculpts they have look tremendous. Hopefully good things will come to them from the rest of the community.

Just a thought, the timing of their decision to announce this kickstarter was absolutely terrible. EVO was just this past week, and had they announced it at the beginning of the tournament on last Friday night, both online and on site in Las Vegas, I'm willing to bet that they could have gotten all they needed to get going by the end of the tournament, considering the fanaticism and attendance of the event (both attendees and contestants), not to mention the amount of people who were streaming it live this year.

So...I'm really curious how Capcom, a notoriously difficult company to work with with ACTUAL companies, feels about this.

This line isn't happening. I have a feeling. I know that Tartamella had a lawsuit with his original partners, which forced them out. However, with THEM, it sounds like the line was a go, and only now is becoming a Kickstarter. I mean...just...effed every which way.

I wish they'd make all 5 characters available in this "Series 1" at least since I only really wanted that Chun Li and Blanka. And is it just me or does this just seem like a poorly constructed KS?

I'm curious as well. I remember watching an interview with the then head of Sota toys a while back, who said that Capcom fought with him on everything, from the choice of characters they wanted to make (they argued bitterly when they discovered Sodom was to be featured in wave 1 of the line) to their variants (the infamous bloody Ryu/Sagat two pack being pulled). They then were burned pretty badly by Jazwares, whose toy line sucked quite honestly, and NECA just couldn't generate interest with their slim pickings of characters (Ryu, Ken and Akuma....again?) Hopefully Capcom is itching for a little bit of success from the toy front again and will ease up a bit, but like you said they are a huge wild card in all of this.

But...if Skeleton Warriors could get funded (something I NEVER saw coming...) I suppose anything can these days.

It's kind of a shame that Capo didn't choose to go after the Mortal Kombat license instead now that I think about it. After how terribly disappointing the Jazwares line was, I'd imagine Ed Boon would drop the cash himself if MK were to be done with sculpts of this quality. And since there's never really been a solid and well articulated palette swapped ninja from the series done thus far, I would have been all over that! Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Reptile...pick a color...I would have been all in!

It does seem poorly constructed and thought out. I'm sorry, but you're not getting this thing funded by offering Ryu in seven different colors, even if for some reason they happen to make one of them to be Evil Ryu.

You answered your own question there bud. they probably spent all their funds on the actual license, and have nothin' left to make the dang toys!

I want them to succeed because I want to see Bison and Vega being made...$35 really is not bad, for cloth and if I pay $40 for my japan figuarts then $35 isn't that pricey...

If these were Marvel Legends, I would be upset....but SF with real cloth, amazing face detail and paint detailing at least on the proto's, I'm in.

I am disappointed, this seems to be poorly planned. No pre-kickstarter hype so people know that it is happening, 7 of the same character and no international backing. As much as I want this to succeed, I doubt we will see much beyond ryu. What they should be doing is offering ken, dan, akuma, shin akuma or evil ryu alongside to make this more interesting.

So a company that got an official license from Capcom needs crowdfunding to actually produce the figures? I'll pass. I'm all for supprting the little guy or stuff that has a limited appeal. But These guys had a display at Toy Fair and obviously impressed the people at Capcom enough to get the deal , but they can't actually make them? Kickstarter is not an online shop. Here's a wild theory Capo, make the figures, get them to retailers and I'll give you money for them

    Hey Guys,
I just read through the posts. Here is the thing, Capo had 3 partners in the company during Toy Fair, there was a copyright dispute over ownership of my art (among other issues I cannot disclose), and a suit against me took place from the other 2 members, I counter sued and a settlement was agreed on (which I cannot disclose either). There is a public record of the lawsuit, so I can say just that much and nothing more.

Well, now I need to raise capital since I own the company and retain the license over these figures. I would love noting more then to make all the figures immediately! I have planned out 5 waves with Capcom based on their popularity and demand, but all figures have been worked into a schedule.

Video coming this week to the Kickstarter.

The Ryu Kickstarter has been approved by Capcom, they have been a dream to work with and are super supportive over the figures! I do want offer Evil Ryu and Ken as alternate rewards in this Kickstarter, (Akuma and Dan have different body types and cannot be offered in this Kickstarter) I need approval first, and SDCC has made schedules tight. Keep checking back to the project. Please hang in there with me and continue supporting an artist founded company. Thanks you!

capcom loses nothing if this fails, the way i see it they are cashing in on the license without taking any risk themselves, and after the praise this got at the toy fair, abandoning the company that is making them could be a bad PR move, it is odd though, that a popular license wouldnt have more regular investors, or given to a company with a more established line of production in the first place.

So myself, being in the UK can ONLY get in if they hit an end stretch goal. So I have to wait for region 1 to support launching to Europe? Also, I guess they wouldn't be interested in these in Japan??? Seems to me INTERNATIONAL should be your FIRST concern, not just a last minute 'maybe' goal.

Also, I support all sorts of art projects on KS and am an avid visitor to the site. I have to say, this is the FIRST project that I have seen that won't allow you to donate a single $1.... a fiver is the minimum. That comes off as cocky and arrogant to me.

That really sucks, I will admit. At least the Kickstarter campaign makes sense now (sorta) but I have to wonder, why doesn't Capcom pump some money into the project themselves?

*sighs... Those bold characters that I highlighted...they unfortunately are part of the problem. Important characters to the series yes, but they've been done to death. Might as well put an Iron Man and a Captain America in there as well as part of the first wave.

On a serious note, Capo Toys has updated their Kickstarter page with more info on the rewards and goals, but there was yet another piece of info on the site that left me both facepalming and scratching my head. They now have a new stretchgoal, which unlocks the tooling for Sagat. Sagat will then be getting HIS OWN kickstarter to get that figure made!?!

Is this seriously how they intend the line to be made? By offering a Kickstarter for each individual figure?

Like I said, hopefully something good comes their way, but for me personally, I really don't see this line maturing and coming to fruition. It holds too much hope and work on the consumer. This is not entirely Capo Toys fault, I'm sure that Mega Man's dive in popularity hasn't hurt Capcom THAT much in that they can't support the most recognizable franchise that they have a bit more. I'll hold out to see what PCS has in store for us in the near future....
