DC Collectibles continues their New 52 themed figures concurrently with lines based on TV, Video Games, Cartoons, and Animated Movies. They’ve just released a Deluxe sized Armored Lex Luthor (Mecha Lex if you will). A new take on his classic look originating in Action Comics #544. The “Warsuit” has evolved over the years, and this is no different incorporating futuristic military themes (as we see it today) with the trademark green and purple deco. We’ve done up a shoot showing off all this guy can do, check it out along with our thoughts after the break!
DC Collectibles Deluxe Lex Luthor
Pros
Big
Great sculpt
Faithful to the comics
Mecha + Lex Luthor = Win
Cons
Face is weak, forced cheesy smile
Paint is a bit sloppy, face and elsewhere
Hose from wings to arm constantly falls out
Once leg/foot joints are moved several times, get a bit loose
T bar in crotch is clear plastic and legs are attached tight, scared of breakage
Colors a bit too muted
Overall
Overall, happy with this figure. It’s big, and represents a way for Superman’s arch nemesis to actually stand a chance against him if you toss in some Kryptonite and a techno backstory. My problem isn’t with the toy so much, but rather the original concept as it appears in the comics. It’s a bit too “buggy-alien” themed, I prefer a more “military mech” feel. A Stormtrooper on steroids. This has a feel closer to the designs seen in DC Universe Online, though not the Lex Luthor from there, more like the Brianiac themed armor. Cool, but not exactly what I would want if I had decision making capabilities at DC :). However, since meched-out Lex Luthor is my thing, he was an instant buy. He works well with Superman, and will tower over the other villains on the DC shelf, the way it should be. MechaLex FTW.
