Sideshow brings the thunder with Modern Age Thor and Thor Frog
Verily, Thor, God of Thunder hath become one of the most beloved Marvel superheroes since his comic book debut over fifty years ago, and since then more than just his Shakespearean dialogue that has changed…
It’s been said time and again that superheroes are the gods of modern day mythology, but Marvel’s Thor was the first time the two had ever truly been combined. In the early 1960s, Marvel publishers challenged creator Stan Lee to continue adding to their rapidly growing character roster. As he struggled to find a new hero that was “stronger than the strongest man”, the answer dawned on him: “Don’t make him human — make him a god.” Lee, who felt that Greek and Roman mythology had been visited too frequently already in popular culture, looked instead to Norse legends, transforming Thor into, “the most colorful super hero of all.”
Decades later, as superheroes were ushered into a modern era, updating Thor presented a formidable challenge. In the third volume of Thor, Marvel artist Olivier Coipel introduced a new costume that combined elements from his classic look with just the right touch of realism for the warrior god, featuring chainmail armor, helmet modifications, a leather harness, and armor discs. Thor’s new duds were well-received by fans, lasting through a variety of story arcs, and it was no surprise that they became a primary reference for Chris Hemsworth’s costume in the Thor films and The Avengers.
From the pages of Marvel Comics, Sideshow Collectibles is proud to celebrate Thor’s contemporary look with the Thor Modern Age Premium Format™ Figure.
A champion among gods and men, and one of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, the Asgardian Avenger is renowned across the Nine Worlds for his bravery, strength and fury. Inspired by costume designs defined by Marvel artist Olivier Coipel, the warrior god launches onto the battlefield in a dynamic composition wearing his winged helmet, intricately sculpted metallic mail, a hand-tailored fabric tunic with gold piping and armor disc plates.
With his dramatic sculpted red cape billowing out behind him, the Odinson prepares to deliver swift justice, swinging the divine hammer Mjolnir in a mighty blow against his enemies. Fierce determination etched on his face, it is plain to see that Thor will stop at nothing to defend those who cannot defend themselves.
Sideshow Exclusive
The Sideshow Exclusive edition will also offer collectors the abilty to display Thor with the all-powerful Odinsword, Ragnarok.
“He had the power of the God of Thunder, as well as his hammer. And e’er since, that frog, newly dubbed Throg, uses yon hammer to protect his clan and stands e’er vigilant against any who would threaten them!”
Walt Simonson’s run on Thor may have lasted just a three short years in the mid-80s, but in that time his work was among the most accomplished and definitive for the character. In addition to drama and pathos, Simonson brought a refreshing element of humor to the series. One of the most memorable examples occurred during a three issue story arc, where Thor is cursed by Loki to live as a frog and banished to Central Park in New York City in an almost fairytale scenario. While the mighty Thunder God eventually returns to his Asgardian form, another frog known as Puddlegulp takes up the mantle as Throg, the Frog of Thunder, and continues on to join Lockjaw and the Pet Avengers in a series of exciting adventures.
Lockjaw and the Pet Avengers variant cover by Niko Henrikson“One of the lessons I got from Stan [Lee] and Jack [Kirby] when I was a reader in the 1960s was that if you keep a straight face, you could do anything,” Simonson explained. “Over the years, the two stories I’ve probably heard the most about are Beta Ray Bill and Frog Thor… For the frog story, we got about half positive, three or four crabby letters, and half saying, ‘Is this a funny story? Is this a joke?’ They were confused! They weren’t cranky, but they weren’t sure what to think. 25 years later, people have figured it out.”
Counting ourselves among those who have“figured it out,” Sideshow is delighted to present the Thor Frog Diorama.
Six inches of pure awesome, the fully sculpted Throg comes to life with vibrant colors and incredible detail, wielding his tiny version of the Thunder God’s hammer, Frogjolnir.
An off-the-wall hero from a humorous, fun-loving era of Thor comics, Marvel fans of all ages are certain to find the Thor Frog Diorama simply irresistible!
Both the regular and exclusive versions of the Thor Modern Age Premium Format™ Figure will be priced at $439.99, with optional payment plans available, and the Thor Frog Diorama will be $99.99. Or, buy them together and save $20!
