Modern Star Trek Play Arts Kai Kirk and Spock

Posted on January 8, 2014 at 10:12 am by Joe Moore under Star Trek Toy News

Square Enix has released the first photos for two new Play Arts Kai Star Trek Figures. The figures are based off the J.J. Abrams Star Trek Film versions of Captain Kirk and Spock. These first images are just the teasers. We’ll have more images, release dates and prices soon.

EDIT:
When you do as much toy reporting as I do, you tend to forget when you’ve seen something before. We actually did see the Star Trek Play Arts Kai at New York Comic Con. These are the first official photos, but not the first look.

Read on to see the photos.

Curious how the PAK figures are either triumphal wins or apocalyptic fails...! Needless to say, these two are in the second category.

Meh. Should have gone with Bones anyway.

I wonder what look they were trying to go for with these. They clearly weren't trying to make them look anything like the actors these are supposed to be based on. This is sad to say, but I honestly don't want to see them attempt any of the others. Most especially my favorite character Bones.

Those pics are pretty much what I expected when I saw the thread title. Not my thing - then again, I've never really been that into PAK anyway. But as PAK figures, they look fine and will probably fit in well with anyone's existing collection.

When Joe said they were based on the J.J. Abrams film, he meant that film served as the starting point for PAK's "artist's interpretation", as opposed to using TOS as a starting point.

What you have to consider when you look at these is that Play Arts Kai figures are always hyper-stylized versions of characters from various IPs. They are never intended to be identical to any existing source material. Do a Google image search for PAK figures and you'll see what I mean by that.

Damn, I really wanted some good NuTrek figures since it's a forgone conclusion that Playmates is never going to finish its 12" line from 2009. These wouldn't be too horrible for a reasonable price but have you seen PAK prices lately? These are easily going to run $90 like their upcoming Robocops. I don't know how other stores even justify ordering them anymore because I've found them a difficult sell since the last jump from $50 to $70.

    Confirmed, $90 each.

Wow. While I love both Star Trek(including the new movies) and the Play Arts Kai line, these are just horrible. The likenesses are god-awful, the bodies are too big for the characters, and...well, the paint apps and accessories are decent. I guess.

From the side profire they kinda do, but then from any other angle they just look odd.

I think that was the problem, they were trying to make them look like the actors, but done in that Play Arts dynamic comic book style that they usually go for and it just didn't mix.

Aww, man. I was really looking forward to these, too.
I dunno why I'm surprised. In my opinion, they've yet to produce a single male Play Arts sculpt that I've been satisfied with. Many of them aren't even remotely masculine.

the likenness is decent on both, at least for me. plus this is the first chris pine kirk figure (non- kre-o)since 2009 and these are 1,000 times better than the playmate chris pine kirks.
i think play arts is going for "artistic" versions of the real life characters like a comic book. there not meant to look totally realistic. given all that there still must buys for me.
