It sounds like he's begging. I dunno. I know they have to do what is needed to advertise and get this message out there, but it sounds kind of pathetic. Makes them look like a Micky Mouse operation.

I mean, what would he be doing if he didn't have this Mattel gig?

People who complain about the price are probably also people who don't understand why 3rd party Transformers cost so much, or why Hot Toys figures are so much. . IT'S SIMPLE, Non-mass market toys cost more. PERIOD!! If you don't want to pay then don't buy the product or bitch about it, stick to the mass market garbage that is cheep and shut up. Also people who don't realize that prices have went up IN ALL TOYS just are not wanting to deal with reality. I remember 5-6 years ago when GI Joes were 5$, now they are 10$, Marvel Legends were 8$ in the past, now they are 15$ or more. MOTUC have went up 5$ in the last 5 years, that is LESS than most other toys on the market. Deal with it people.

I must say I agree with you, I have always thought the same thing about 3rd party transformers, they tend to cost a kidney and a lung and quite frankly, and this is my opinion, they tend to look like cheap toys (despite all transformation engineering behind them). On the other hand, with Masters of the Universe, well, to me they look like higher quality figures regarding material, detail, paint, etc. So they do not feel that expensive.
I´m not too much into collecting Masters, but I feel that many collectors like me are not as pissed by the price, but for the fact that Matty is basically forcing you to buy stuff you do not want just to get the few figures you might be interested in. Don´t know if this strategy will work in the long term.
They should have probably raised the prices and released more "interesting" figures (and it seems they are kind of aware now...), plus looking for more distribution channels (which has been greatly discussed)
Hot Toys on the other hand... that´s of the few thing I can say you definitely get what you are paying for, detail on those guys simply has no words to describe it (even if I don´t own any)

the only thing that is really bothering me is the fact that if not enough people sub...they might only do 4-8 figures! I liked everything I saw in the SDCC photos from Matty and I want things to carry on as planned. really hope we don't lose out on some of those, let the line live on for another 5 years at least!

5 YEARS? wow. All I want is nice Grayskull display, and I'm done. I only have He-Man, Skeletor, and Battlecat, but if money was no object, I'd still only have less than a dozen figures.

He-Man, Skeletor, Battlecat, Man-At-Arms, Teela, Orko, Merman, Beastman, Evil Lyn, Sorceress, and Trapjaw are the only characters I'd get... the rest I have little to zero interest in.

Lol. Yeah, this guy is something. I imagine his pitch to his first date went something like that. Hand drawn graph and all.

I DO like BBTS's statement regarding this:

Please Note: As the MOTU Classic Subscription figures become more and more obscure, the demand for the less popular figures is drastically lower. Because we are forced to buy all the figures in the subscriptions, the prices on popular figures will be higher than normal. We apologize for this, but in order to bring in the volume of popular characters everyone wants, we need to use proceeds of their sales to pay for the less desirable figures that could be in our inventory for the long term and may end up on clearance.

I understand what you are saying, inflation sucks but like I have been saying in the past Mattel is still pretending they are doing nothing wrong. If you have a company your job is to create a demand for your product, buyers will buy if they like it. Look at Apple products are they overpriced? yes, but Apple sells them, why its their job.

So that means on top of their already way too high prices, they're just going to be higher lol. I would only purchase from BBTS as a near last resort.

that doesn't explain why they sell less and less each year. you cant blame the consumer for your shortcomings. the line itself is running its course at this point and nobody wants to pay in advance when the majority of figures that come out are NOT what people want. its not that ONE figure costs as much as it does, its that in order to get that one or two figures you want that year you have to buy into all the rest you have zero interest in.

add in a all the QC and distribution/shipping issues they have been having with digital river and you have people jumping ship left and right. the line it great, but due to things out of the consumers control it has become less and less worth the investment every year...that's just the reality of the situation.

Trust me , I know about not wanting every character that comes with MOTUC, but I have been getting every figure since the SDCC Greyskull, so I am going to get whatever they put out, I don't care for about 40% of what gets made (I love the Horde and the main Skeletor bad guys) and I don't think matty shoud beg for subs like a GAMESTOP begging for magazine subscriptions, but it is what happens. I understand costs going up, I understand that the line is not mainstream, I understand they have lost main character focus, I am just tired of people complaining about it. I want the toys , good and bad, so I will get them, end of story. If they end the line just like Ghostbusters, and if it does, oh well, I will buy something else.

Seems like "Toy Guru" will be out of a job if these subs don't sell. Didn't he introduce himself in the video as Brand Manager for MOTUC, DCUC, and Voltron? All things that don't have much life left in them.

  19. pud333's Avatar pud333 says

    07-30-2012, 07:39 PM

See here's my thing about subscriptions: I have never owned any MOTUC or Voltron, but I've been collecting DCUC for a while, so I'll say it from that perspective: I have no desire to pay for a subscription, when the majority of figures are ones I have no interest in, especially since I have to buy all of them. I don't mind paying for quality (I frequently pay top dollar for the high end toys). The thing about DCUC, is that I am not paying to buy every figure in a line where it is full of frankenfigures with very little evolution or imagination to them. I know body parts swapping is nothing new, but this is ridiculous. Nothing in the new 2013 sub is exciting at all. I don't mind higher prices - heck, charge $5 per figure more. whatever. So long as I get quality: new sculpts, accessories, etc. Instead, we get rising costs on figures (thanks to inflation) that are basically the EXACT same as they were back in the DCSH line. I know superheroes don't come with many accessories, but be imaginative.

Instead, what are they doing? Begging people to buy the same stuff they created five years ago. Whatever. I'm over it. Clearly other collectors are the same way, considering the reluctance for fans to re-up their subs. Money is tight for everyone these days. More and more people are being smarter with their money, and if you want your product to sell, it has to be current, it has to be innovative, and it has to be what people want. Sorry, but another Flash repaint? Not interested, bro. Imagine another company (Apple, Ford, Sony, Armani, etc) basically putting a youtube video up begging people to buy. Sheesh. If you're gonna do that, at least throw in some hot girls or something.

I was thinking about getting one of the Club Infinite Earths subscriptions, but the fact that you can't cancel them and prices might increase if subs are low scared me off.

Here's what annoys me though, people are complaining about $25 for an MotUC figure. In Australia, it costs $18 (RRP) for a Marvel Universe 3 3/4" figure at Target. Speciality stores sell Movie Masters for $40 a piece.

These are not nearly as gorgeous or high quality as the MotUC figures. I've never even see He-Man, but I can still easily see the beauty in the figures and it drives me mad that people complain about $25 when if someone outside of the Americas were to try and order them (or the Club Infinite Earths sub) they would have to pay for shipping as well, which would bump the figures up to at least $35 each.

  23. DogFashionDisco's Avatar DogFashionDisco says

I get where you're coming from, but imported goods tend to reflect an inflated cost. Personally, I think you shouldn't have to pay that much. By the way, I just want to point out that they said it COSTS $25 to MAKE a figure.
