Reign Of Superman Toys Canceled

Posted on December 6, 2011 at 7:44 am by Joe Moore under DC Toy News

Well, that didn’t take long. Only a few short days after the listing popped up, Big Bad Toy Store pulled the pre-orders for the Reign of Superman figures. Forum member malcontentman emailed BBTS about the situation. They responded that Mattel has canceled the figures. Definitely a bummer for those who were interested.

I'm guessing it'll be an offshoot line similar to the Green Lantern Classics and Batman Legacy lines.

Wow. . .seems like they found a way get more mileage out of their toy molds. Speculation of course, but it probably is just a re-packaging of DCSH Doomsday, Steel, and Cyborg Superman (who already had a re-release in a two-pack), and DCUC Superboy and Eradicator.

Personally, it's the set I had dreamed of since reading the Death of Superman comics when they originally came out -- 1992? But I have them all already. If it is as it seems, that's a great opportunity for folks just getting in to DCUC collecting. Nice find OP!

This is probably the start of the "warm up" to Man of Steel...or would have been if it had stayed on track for a Winter 2012 release. Now it's gonna be a loooong roll up.

Still, isn't next year the 20th anniversary of "The Death of Superman" story arc?

The only way these will be worthwhile is if:

    Superboy has a "Modern" variant.

Doomsday gets a new, larger-size mold. Doesn't have to be full-on BAF size (though it'd be nice), just...bigger. Actually I could see a "new" Doomsday being sold here IF all the other figures are straight repaints/rereleases.

Nice for folks that don't have Steel (One of the best of the "DCSH" line and still holds up VERY well with current DCUC offerings) or Eradicator yet.

Is that the one that came packed with the DOS trade and Supes?

Yeah, that first link is the set I have, got it half price at a Borders forever ago. That second one is signifigantly smaller though right?

If this is like the DCSH. I'm glad! I missed out on the DCSH line. YAY!

At this price, I can't see a new sculpt Doomsday being any larger than the DCSH one. So it's probably just a repaint or reissue.
Which makes me sad, because that likely kills any chance at getting an oversized Doomsday from the club, within the next few years.
    I'll probably get it though.

For Superboy, I doubt they'll give him a modern version, given that everything about this line screams anniversary for Reign of the Supermen... especially since it's named that! And it seems Mattel's days of variants/chases are over with with DCU figures. Most likely it's a fairly straight rerelease of the superboy that was out last year. Have it, so pass on this.

Steel, whether reissue or new, I need it.

Cyborg Superman, I have the Sinestro Corps Cyborg Supes, and that's the only version of this character that matters to me.

Erradicator, reissue or new, couldn't care less either way.

Nah, it's DCUC size. DC Superheroes (DCSH or Select Sculpt Series or S3) was what DCUC was before there was DCUC. At the time, they only had license to do Batman and Superman figures. When Mattel got the license to do all DC characters, they rebranded it as DC Universe Classics (and started the Collect 'n Connect gimmick at the same time).

Unless you meant the DCSH one is significantly smaller than the DC Direct one in that 2pack. . .I don't know if it is; I've never had the DC Direct one.

Oh, I could have sworn the the Doomsday from the 2 pack stood taller then Supes. I could be wrong though, I haven't had either off the shelf in ages lol.

Wouldn't it be funny (not funny "haha" but funny like when a skateboarder falls off and does a faceplant or busts his crotch) if that Steel ended up being Natasha Irons?

Not necessarily - If all the other figures in the set are straight repaints, they could use the savings to make a new Doomsday. I'm pretty sure Mattel is well aware of the demand for a larger Doomsday. Maybe not BAF size, just...bigger. But we'll see. Plus I don't think a straight re-release here would stop the club from making an "oversize" one in the subscription.

I know a modern Superboy (Well, semi-modern since now we have DCnu Superboy) is a long shot.

So new toys based on the Death and Return of Superman comics? I have been dying to get a Cyborg Superman, without having to get a second figure I don't want or paying outrageous prices. So I may actually get this whole set since it appears to be a nice contained line. Will wait for pics though.

I'm a little pissed I just bought a Doomsday and may get Superboy for Christmas. Any word if this wave will have a CNC fig with it? It's great news for Steele and Cyborg Sups, even Eradicator. I've been really getting into this DC line. Mostly female characters CNC's, bad guys and favs like the Reign of Supermen. I hope we get official pics soon.

I know there isn't much chance, but I would love a more detailed DCUC version of the Cyborg Superman like the DC Direct version, a larger Steel around the height of DCUC Ares, a Doomsday around the size of Kilowog, and a Modern version of Connor... well might as well throw in a clear visor for the Eradicator and energy blast for for his hands.

I still need to get the Batman: Knight Fall figures and now these are coming out. I have the DC Direct version of Cyborg Sup and if they took the DC Direct detail and added the Mattel articulation I would be very happy. I do prefer the Sinestro Corp uniform more than his traditional look too. Doomsday should definitely be a larger CNC sized figure. Mattel should take a lesson from S.H.Figuarts/Figmas and include more interchangable heads, hands, accessories. I like options.

Honestly I think the Bigger Doomsday is needed If Bane could be made in a 7 inch all figure and the C&C Figures Range between Bane and Stel/STRIPE I would say make him as big as Darkseid or maybe a little shorter They had seen each other twice and were comperable in size

I would do the same for Mongul.

As for Superboy, Cyborg Superman, Eradicator, and Steel all Repaints.... Why not Do Zod, Supergirl, Superwoman (All Star Superman version), Maxima, and A Larger Parasite

I would love that if they did, at least that would somewhat justify them keeping the $15 price tag on the DCUC figures even though they killed the CNC parts.

Yes and Yes... we definitely need a bigger Mongul as well, and he could be worked into a Reign of Supermen set of figures easily

The 4H have been wanting to redo Doomsday since the DCSH one they made was too small. Given the msrp of this set and the assumed repaints, I HOPE the added cost went into tooling a larger Doomsday.

Already have Steel and Cyborg Superman. Missed out on Eradicator and now I don't feel bad about missing out on Superboy. Most likely will buy this set depending on if Doomsday is new.
