Tis The Season Spotlight – Donating Toys

Posted on November 14, 2011at 10:38 amby Deefuzzunder Toyark Spotlight

The holiday season is right around the corner, and with all of the crazy deal shopping and gift pandemonium hoopla there is one aspect of it that sometimes may go unnoticed. The Toys for Tots foundation is a charity program run by the United States Marine Corps Reserve which serves to provide toys to children of less fortunate families for Christmas.

As early as October, donation bins will begin to appear at Toys R US and Babies R US locations to collect new and unwrapped toys from those wishing to donate. There are other ways to donate so those who may be interested should visit the Toys For Tots website to find their local drop off locations.

There has been some discussion taking place on this topic recently. Do you ever make an effort to donate during this time of year? If you donate do you buy some new toys for donation or do you have some leftovers in your collection at home that are unopened and ready to donate? Have any charitable alternatives to Toys for Toys? Join the discussion thread and sound off!

I know its a little early but Ive already started seeing bins put up so I was wondering does anyone donate to toys for tots or any other orginazation like it? I will be donating this year and I urge others to do the same.

I make sure to donate yearly. My dad's a Retired Marine, so it's more or less a family tradition.

I put aside toys all year, some great and some not so much, in order to contribute to groups like Toy for Tots. I'm really glad you brought this up, thank you. As collectors we should try our best to at least give a few of our own toys back to the community, and through organizations like this we know that they will go to a proper home.

They can have the cards and boxes from my toys- that way they'll have the greatest toy of all: imagination.

See? I'm awesome in my total dickery!

I dont think so. I think you RULE!! Back in my day us turds had to play with widdled-wood toys that we made ourselves. It was the "widdled people" VS the "Stick-men" back in my day dammit. These spoiled homeless youths need nothing BUT imagination! You want an action figure punk? Stick little twigs in that stolen orange!!!

Im defensive when it comes to kids) I am actually a little excited about getting to donate. Me and my brother plan to buy some stuff soon but knowing me I will keep going till christmas lol.

Oh get your panties un-wadded man, no one was serious at all. A little levity brother.I was actually just makeing fun of the thread name initially. I always thought the name "Toys for Tots" sounded stupid. I have given away plenty to kids and will continue to.

My observation since joining this forum is that it seems almost pointless to talk about donating toys on here. I realize most of us are obsessed with toy collecting, and some of you think it is preachy to suggest giving up any of your precious stash, but get over it. We live in a shitty world where kids sit around with nothing. I once met a kid when I was younger who was so poor and bored that he one day decided to stick a nail into his nostril, and learned that he could insert things into his cranium without major harm. Most of you would have just died trying to do that, so try not to be so selfish next time you think about what kids do when they don't have proper toys to use while trying to learn and adapt.
    Serious? Yes. Unnecessary? No.
You might be grown men with vast toy collections, but imagine what half of that stuff you squander your money on could do to brighten the lives of kids across the world. Instead, it all just sits in your apartments and man caves for your own amusement. If you want to collect, at least respect the kids out there that share a bit of what you once had - "imagination".

I have a children's cancer center right near my house- last year they got five long boxes of (screened for content) comics- this year I'll likely do the same (damn, but I have a ton of useless 90's comic books!).

I open my figs, so giving extras away that way is kinda crappy- but I could see buying a bunch of those cheap Big Lots soldiers for the kids...the "imagination" joke is sorta on though- I'd rather buy kids coloring books and stuff to draw with than toys- more universal appeal there so the girls dont get left out.

And I already donate to my local food bank- helps balance the Karma...or possibly I'm saving it up for something truly awful. I'll be all like
"But your honor! I donate toa food bank!"
"Case Dismissed! Just dont let me hear your still chopping up tourists, young man!"

    (scandal ensues)

I love donating GI Joes, Star wars and Barbies. Maybe I will start doing spider-man and MUs now. Also thanks dog fashion disco. You actually opened my eyes a bit to the fact I could be buying stuff all year to put up for toys for tots and not just starting in november.

Nobody disrespected children guy. Get off your trip. What me and the other guy were doing was adding a little levity to a sad thread. As Ive said before Ive donated plenty to kids and continue to. But there are far worse problems in the world. People die of hunger and disease everyday. Is it a nice thing to donate toys? Absolutly. Will it end all the worlds woes? Not at all. However if one very rich man decided to end hunger he could...but when he doesnt does he get an earfull? No. Why? Cause he worked for what he has...just like I have. For many years. Im entitled to myown amusement friend. And its not one bit at the expense of any kid.

Now if you guys wanna make yourselves feel better about all that scalping because you gave a few chewed-up Joes to Billy down the block and wanna pat eachother on the backs about it fine.

Most those wealthy men don't sit around joking about how they could help on a public forum. Nice try by trying to put us down by calling us scalpers. I mean really nice try for a second I thought I might actually be a scalper and didnt know it

this thread is not to be depressing. It is simply to get the word out and remind people to get out and do what they can. I in no way want a "pat on the back" thats why I reframe from stating exactly how much I do or do not donate. All I want is to remind everyone to get out and do what you can. No kid deserves to go without during christmas time.

Also remember if you buy all those pegwarmers you can donate them then your store must restock with new stuff. Win win to a kid who went without much at all, getting a ninja spider-man it would be like a TF collector getting fort Max or a MU collocter getting Xforce Archanger

Yeah, just make sure ya'llz guys don't be donating any Freddy Krueger dolls elsewise they be all growed up scarred for life and develop multiple personality posting disorder...

You shouldn't go on one thread and go on about the decay of society and we as a whole not doing enough of the small things to make sure that they don't grow up all messed up and then go on another thread and defend your right to amuse yourself by insulting others who have decided to donate toys to the less fortunate. It destroys your credibility and while I don't normally call people out personally, that last sentence pretty much destroyed any respect I had for you as well because that was an extremely immature and generalized attack at everyone donating toys over a personal squabble that you have with one or two posters.

    And ya gotta wonder why.

We werent joking about how we could help donate to kids. Dont twist our actions sir. We were just joking between fellow collectors to help lighten things up a bit, and for that we get attacked? ooookay.

You wanna call me and the other guy the "bad guys" you go right ahead.

@theChris: I insulted no one until I was attacked. Re-read the thread sir. Personally, as I dont know you...I couldnt care less if you wanna think what you want. Must have touched a nerve though lol

Don't drag Jason into this, man. His joke was relatively harmless. Even yours was relatively harmless if not a bit contradictory to your other posts. I just don't think most of us take kindly to being called scalpers for no reason or have you say that we're donating a few chewed up Joes to poor kids to make ourselves feel better about our alledged scalping. Just quit now while you can and don't escalate it any further and hope that in a few days, all will be forgotten.

Take a picture of the thread and post it everyday, allday. Give it to your momma. Pass it out on the street. I couldnt care less. I was verbally attacked. First. I responded in kind. You can either forget it or not forget it. It is YOU who has lost credability to ME sir. If you are not what I said in a moment of frustration why are you so defensive about it?

I read everything just fine. Yeah you did touch a nerve. Getting pissed off for being accused of something or seeing others getting accused of something that isn't true? Hmmm, imagine that. Getting into an argument with one or two people and then insulting everyone seems pretty messed up to me but then again, you did say that you were scarred for life so I'll just chalk that up to your bad upbringing with all those scary toys. Poor guy.

I dont recall saying that once actually. lol
Again you just have a tendancy to add whatever you like to a conversation to serve your purposes it seems Chris.

    Hmm...imagine that.

I never called either of you bad guys. As a matter of fact Jason is on my buddy list. I even apologized in advance in case either of you were joking but warned I get a little defensive when it comes to kids. I didn't get anywhere as defensive as you did. You began throwing insults and attacking.

I don't know how I do it but it seems whenever I post a thread a fight brakes out.

Someone mentioned donating things like coloring books and what not. Does anyone have anymore veiws on this subject. Like whats better. Donating multiple toys for both sexes or a ton of coloring and activity books. Or maybe just toys and throw some books in with it.

I say donate whatever you can. I didn't have a lot as a child and I was happy to get anything at all. A lot of kids aren't that picky as long as it's gender appropriate or gender ambiguous. Boardgames are usually a good bet and have lots of replay value and encourages family/group interaction which is positive. I gave away a ton of older fantasy boardgames like HeroQuest and DarkWorld to the community centre and kids seem to really take to those games.
