Star Wars Death Star Trench Run Set Released

Posted on September 24, 2011 at 6:55 pm by Shin Densetsu under Star Wars Toy News

Here at Toyark, we love us some Original Trilogy. While Hasbro gives a lot of love to the prequels and Clone Wars, sometimes us they toss us OT fans some huge bones, and honestly, today I had to do a double take.

While randomly strolling into Toys R Us today not at all knowing what to expect, I came across the Death Star Trench Run set. Who could forget the epic trench run from A New Hope where Luke blew up the Death Star? We 1st showed you this set at San Diego Comic Con 2011.

The set includes the following figures(they look like VOTC/Saga Legends repaints):

  • X Wing Pilot Luke Skywalker
  • R2D2
  • Darth Vader
Vader’s TIE Advanced X1 Starfighter looks like a repaint of previously released versions, the canopy hatch still has hollow gaps. However, Luke’s Red 5 X Wing was a complete surprise, as it’s a newly retooled version!

While the wings and body look the same mold-wise as the previous Wedge/Luke/Red Leader X Wings(sold exclusively at Target and Toys R Us respectively), the cockpit and nose have been retooled. The cockpit now has a removable dashboard with attached joy stick. In addition, a retractable targeting computer is now in the cockpit. The front landing gear skid also has an opening door. That’s not all, a retractable proton torpedo is now built into the underside of the nose! Perhaps this can now be looked at as the definitive Hasbro X Wing.

I mentioned doing a double take because of this set. 1st, the retooled X Wing was a pleasant surprise. Secondly; the price: $99.99. Yeah…do what I did, just stare at the box, which you can do after the jump!

Yeah that price is diesel man I was like whaaaaatttt?!

Main draw here is the X-Wing. Had the TIE Advanced been retooled too, I think this would've been worth it.

Saw just one at the TRU I went too on my birthday, passed on it cause of the price too.

I'd just want the X-Wing out of the set if they'd release it individually......still hopefully this one will go to discounted price soon.

so ive been looking at the pics for a few minutes and then realized its the same vehicles from the 90s kenner line. right? Just like the AT AT and AT ST? If so, i can go down to my local comic shop and but that same tie fighter for 20 bucks.

they have priced me out of collecting this stuff, figures only and even that is getting to be a bit pricey.

It's a nice looking set, but I'm not a big enough Star Wars fan to even consider buying this. Even if the price was dropped a fair amount from what it is now.

I don't know about the AT-ST, or these, but I'm pretty sure the AT-AT was a completely new sculpt.

TIE Fighter yes, X-Wing no. The 90s Kenner line started with the 77/78 X-Wing sculpt which was stubby and out of proportion. Later by 97 iirc, they made an all new Power FX X-Wing which was a lot bigger and had way better proportions, it didn't look fat like the original toy. However, due to the electronic gimmicks, the pilot figure was not removable.

This mold was later retooled sans electronics and with space for a pilot figure in 2002, the 1st TRU exclusive Dagobah X Wing. In 2004 it was repainted as Red Leader, in 06 as another Dagobah X Wing with swamp vines and monster and in 09 or 10 as Wedge's X Wing.

This new Red 5 is further retooled.

What would you say it cost to manufacture this set? Keep that in mind before you go out and spend your hard earned money on this.

Some say that the main reason for the high cost is due to retooling the X wing, speculating that on it's own it would be $70+ since the retooling is extensive, and since most folks would pass on that due to price, the figures and TIE Advanced are thrown in to make the set more appealing.

We could also look at it like this, using TRU prices(or close):
    R2D2 $10
    Vader $10
    Luke $10
    TIE Advanced $30
    X Wing $40

I'm pretty sure that X Wing would be more than $40 if sold on its own. The Dagobah 2002 X Wing was $40 in 2002, I think same with Red Leader. The 2006 Dagobah one was $45, and Wedge's was $50 iirc. This new one has been retooled quite a bit and that's reason enough for TRU to charge more.

I think I saw a case of these sitting in BoH Friday night. I'm somewhat tempted to pick it up around the holidays- loves me some X-wing.

Sounds about right. I remember saving up for a month to get the Red Leader. Sitting in storage right now, one of the gems of my collection.

At these prices I am very glad that I don't collect SW any more! They are insane to ask that much for these "retooled" ships!

Cool, price doesn't look too bad, but then in Canada, everything costs more.
