X-Men First Class Minimates Revealed by Art Asylum

Posted on February 17, 2011 at 7:23 am by Joe Moore under Minimates Toy News

Art Asylum has revealed a new series of Marvel Minimates. The newly unveiled figures are based on the upcoming film X-Men First Class.

“Hi everyone, Barry Bradfield here (or, DSTBarry), colourist and designer for Minimates. I’ve had the chance to work on a number of Minimates based on fantastic Marvel movies since I began working on Minimates, but I came to the game just a bit too late to work on the X-Men Last Stand series. So, Wolverine aside (he’s really his own franchise character now in my mind), I never got a chance to work on X-Men movie characters. That changed recently when we were given the chance to design the X-Men First Class series based on this summer’s film!

Just like the film’s fast-tracked release, we had to move quickly to get these figures ready. While DSTUriel, our lead designer got to work on character faces, I set about choosing colours that best fit the reference provided. I would also block (no pun intended) out the characters so they were ready to have Uriel’s part of the design added. Once he sent his art along, I placed it in and tweak it according to suggestions made by DSTRobert. We would also look at new reference as it became available and decide on changes that could be made to make a more accurate figure.

While some characters went through minor alterations (almost none at all) others got revised heavily based on better costume suggestions from the licencor. I have to say the figures are better for it to! I’m quite partial to the lovely Emma Frost Minimate that came about due to a suggested costume change!

In the end, all involved are really excited to have added these characters to the Marvel Movie Minimates Family, and personally, it’s pretty cool to have added X-Men to my own list of ‘Mates worked on.“

So what was the biggest hit at Toy Fair 2011? What was the biggest dud? Did the toy line you were excited for make a good impression? What was the biggest shock?

    Let us know below!

Biggest hit for me was DCUC Young Justice Artimus.
Coming close behind are a new Ahsoka representing her somewhat matured animation model, and Baress.
Biggest dud, Transformers being nothing but movie. (Not that I expected anything else)

Edit, since I forgot about this line when I originally posted this message:
    Biggest shock is KRE-O!
This may cause me to strat up into Legos again.

Biggest hit and biggest shock (for me) were the same thing: The retooled G.I. Joe Skystriker. G.I. Joe in general had a pretty good showing compared to most brands not named "Star Wars" (But very little that was presented by the Star Wars team was a surprise).

Biggest dud? Jazwares' worthless packaging mock-ups for their Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter lines narrowly edge out the fact that there's no comic-based line for the Thor figures.

Biggest shock to me were the MVC3 minimates. Did not see that one coming. Though I don't know why as it makes perfect sense now.

Biggest pleaser was definitely MU with X-23 and Darkhawk, though wonderman was pure pleasant shock too.

The supergirl She-ra TRU pack was also a very Hell yes moment for me.
(Now just bring on Hordak and Darkseid.)

Loved the GI Joe renegades Cobra Commander.

Thundercats had a lot of oomph as well. Loved the playsets and nods. Sold me on getting more than just the new Lion-O and thundertank now. Definitely going to have to get that Tower of Omens playset, alongside the full team and thundertank.

The biggest disappointments for me were YJ and Jazwares.
I get that they were mostly sculpts, and place holder art, but c'mon. I want to get excited for the figures, not the possibilities of what the figures could look like. I want to see the articulation and dynamics of them. So these were pure letdowns, though I'll keep my eyes on them to see how the finals look. I love the 3 cyber ninja pack, but without seeing the figures, I have no clue if I'll bother.

PR was also a minor disappointment. I love the badguy molds but there were just too few of em. No retro fire DragonZord with Megazord limbs was also a really big disappointment. That's the figure I really want in retrofire. So all this dancing around the coolest design from the original is starting to piss me off.

Biggest dud, Transformers being nothing but movie. (Not that I expected anything else)
    Transformers: Prime
    Transformers Kre-O's (Lego-type figures)
    Transformers Rescue Bots
    Star Wars Transformers

Those were all huge parts of Hasbro's Transformers offerings. It was far from being just movie toys.

gotta agree with jetty on the dud side. only movie tf's? crap.

    Leaderclass Sentinel Prime

DOTM Ultimate Optimus Prime. To be expected, ROTF Leaderclass Prime was PERFECT.

    SKY STRIKER!

God damn it it's about time and if you knew of me before HISS Tank, you KNEW this was the main thing I clamored for!

I'd have to say, Play Arts Kai SFIV was VERY surprising for me! As soon as I saw the images I was literally OMG and had to post them! Funny too...I made a wishlist for these a while back, and stated that there aren't many fully articulated fighting game toys...with NECA stopping their SFIV line short, et al. I did also voice that Play Arts Kai would be a good choice for SFIV...so seeing this actually reach fruition....

    FUUUUUUUUUUUUUCKKKKKKKKKK YYYYYAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Republic Attack Shuttle for Star Wars is cool, gonna buy that. The DOTM Transformers...believe it or not, what I got real excited about was the Cyberverse Commanders and Battle stations. Mad fun at a small scale! POWERGLIDE? Oh god! Cool! Also the DOTM voyagers look better now, and the LEADER figures..fucking time we got Ironhide! Sentinel is beast too...just wondering if his swords separate or if it's a Darth Maul-esque thing permanently connected.

Hearing that New Cap is one of the 1st upcoming Marvel Legends..hell yes!

Excited about Jazwares' fighting game stuff but need to see actual prototypes.

Money might be tighter all around for us but I am SURPRISED at how much kick as stuff was shown this year! Hasbro really surprised me with GI Joe and Cyberverse, their new Heroes stuff looks good, and damn..we got great toys all around coming this year!

Also Batman Legacy? 4H, YOU FREAKING ROCK! ARKHAM BATMAN FOR THE GOD DAMN WIN!

Oh and Thundercats? Bandai America you have impressed me. It's a shame that the deluxe figures are underwhelming aside from the bases.

Less Than Awesome: Cap and Thor toys. Ultimate Prime. MOTUC Clawful. Mortal Kombat mockup featuring art a decade old.

Misses: Young Justice, lack of actual figures from Jazwares, lack of new MOTUC reveals, my lack of funds to get everything I want....

You may want to go back over our Transformers coverage at this year's Toy Fair. If there still isn't anything of interest, I can understand. But there was a lot more than just Dark of the Moon toys. A lot more.

Hits: GI Joe Sci-Fi, Zarana, Techno-Viper, Skystriker as Starscream, MOTUC Man-E-Faces and Clawful, Thundercats Classics mock-up packaging, Transformers Cyberverse Commander Powerglide (scout class).

Misses: No TF Generations reveals (Warpath namely), MOTUC Faceless One, GI Joe POC Rock Viper, Young Justice 6" figures heads being too animated looking and the fact that Zarana and the Starscream Skystriker are SDCC exclusives.

Uh, lack of MOTUC reveals? The following were MOTUC reveals:

Catra accessories - comb whip, silver toy mask
    Faceless One
Blonde Bikini Teela (aka Battleground Teela)
    Clawful
    Man-E-Faces
    Megator
    She-Ra vs Supergirl 2-pack

That's pretty on par for MOTUC reveals at Toyfair (last year was Gygor, Whiplash, Count Marzo, She-Ra, Keldor, Tytus, and the second Weapons Pack).

Duds for me was GB. Really didnt show anything too impressive. And as cool as MOTUC is, I'm getting turned off completely.

biggest hit: dotm figures. i know some are hit and miss like ultimate prime (which is sorta growing on me) but then again these are toys and im sure hasbro are just trying to make things a little easier for the younger fans and kids who buy them.

biggest gripe: NO WHIPLASH MARK 2!!! i mean come on it was the climax suit of the film and we havent seen anything of it. the hammer suit is nice but i want whiplash!!!!

Most of this was already known or speculated before Toy Fair. Hence why I said new.

True. I forgot about Kre-O. I've been fighting the urge to get back into legos for years, and I those may break my resistance. But I don't consider them real transformers. Just a side oddity. (Simularly as someone who collects Hasbro Star Wars may not consider Lego Star Wars to be part of the offering).
Rescue Bots, not really interested in collecting toys ment four the youngest fans.
Star Wars Transformers, are Star Wars, not Transformers, they're transforming Star Wars toys, ment for Star Wars fans, and have little to nothing to do with Transformers, or the transformers design team, even. They're TFs in name alone.

Prime, by their designs, by fiction, is just more movie. Heavily movie-inspired designs, very movie inspired setting. It's just basically more movie to me.

    Shock: Leader Class Ironhide
Dud: Marvel Legends...no pictures, precious little info

    Otherwise I'm reserving judgment.

    And incidentally, I found this...
YouTube - Marvel Legends Thor & Captain America Movie 6" Figure Pics

He seems to think they're Legends-size Thor and Cap figures. There's no official info. They look a little tall for 3 3/4" scale. Marvelous News thinks they might be 6" too.

Star Wars: the new clone molds are perfect, they look just like the sideshow 12 inch figures but in 1/18th scale. i'm gettin at least 3 captain Fordos and 2 degobah landing Lukes. can't wait to do a custom battle damaged Fordo.

    HIT:

*The upcoming MU figures. X23, Taskmaster, Silver Samurai, Quicksilver/Wonderman, and Thanos/Warlock! Plus the rest of the single packs are great except for some recolored scrap like Doom, Namor, and Ultron. I hate the other figs though, like the upcoming 2-pack BROWN Wolverine and the old TRU Sabertooth. For god's sake, can't we at least see an Astonishing Wolverine version!? The First Class Cyclops/Jean Grey 2-pack was also kinda weak.

*Playarts KAI Street Fighter. HELL YEAH! There's no doubt about the quality of the figures. My main concern now is the price. Looks like my wallet will cry a river.

*Thundercats! Great figs! I wish though that the 3.75 line was the old school Thundercats. Not much of a fan of the new designs.

*DC Direct Mass Effect 2 figures. I thought they were canceled!? But I saw some pics that they were displayed in the Toy Fair so... yay!

    MISS:

*Jazwares! WTF! Got me all excited on the Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat line... but what the hell, there are no prototypes!? Only placeholders!? Arrgh!
