Discussion Of The Week- Marvel Universe 2010 Wolverine

Posted on January 31, 2010 at 6:03 pm by Shin Densetsu under Marvel Toy News

The Marvel Universe line debuted in 2009 and fulfilled the desire of 3-3/4″ fans to have a Marvel line made by the same company who makes G.I. Joe. The 1st Wolverine figure released had Wolverine’s current X-Force costume. Yet something has been missing from the Marvel Universe lineup….

…Wolverine’s blue and yellow costume(s)! Yes, the Marvel Universe line has yet to feature Wolverine in either his current costume(which debuted in Astonishing X-Men), or his classic tiger stripe costume(the one made popular in the 90’s and also showed up in the cartoon). While it can be said that the X-Men Origins Wolverine versions fit the bill, let’s face it, fans want Marvel Universe versions! With the release of Jean Grey and the standard outfit blue/yellow X-Men costumed Wolverine late last year, we take it it’s a good sign that the tiger stripe and Astonishing X-men costumes for Wolverine are inevitable in the Marvel Universe line.

So the question is, which one do you want more? For the discussion of the week, that’s just what we are trying to figure out! Click on the discuss button to vote in this week’s poll/discussion of the week, tiger stripe Wolverine VS Astosnishing X-Men Wolverine for the Marvel Universe line!

The Marvel Universe line is missing 2 notable figures of Wolverine:

    • Tiger Stripe classic 90's version(cartoon version too)
    • Astonishing X-Men version(current costume)
Arguably the tiger stripe design from the 90's is the most popular and recognizable. So popular in fact, that it is the primary influence for the Astonishing X-Men costume(which in turn was a return to the spandex costumes after the Morrison run).

Now the ASX costume has had some changes since it's debut. It now has the guard panels on the gloves and boots, seen 1st in Civil War. Depending on who the penciler is, Wolverine tends to have the long eared mask. The 1st drawings of the ASX costume were with the shorter ears, influenced by his 1st costume.

Out of all the Wolverines in the Marvel Universe line, I am surprised that we are missing these 2. Ideally we would get both in 1 year, but if we had to choose just 1 for 2010,

Which would you want more for Marvel Universe, Astonishing X-Men Wolverine, or the classic Tiger Stripe Wolverine?

I'd buy both too but I want a tiger stripe version 1st to replace my XMO Wolverine version; the latter is lacking!

I want both as well, but I prefer the Astonishing costume a little more over the tiger stripe.

Oh, and welcome back Discussion of the Week. I missed you.

I'd rather get the Astonishing X-Men version, because we did get the full tiger stripe with the movie line, and the Astonishing one fits better with previously released characters and costumes in the MU line... Mostly the New Avengers (Ronin, Bucky Cap, Luke Cage) and that makes me want the Astonishing one more.

I hope they fix the mold to be a bit shorter though. Wolverine dwarfing Magneto is an embarassment to Hasbro.

I really want a correct X-Force version. Which is the ASX costume in the black and silver. But wolverine def needs to be way shorter.

I'm gonna have to agree with everybody basically. I'd get both but I'd like an ASX version because XMO gave us a (crappy but legit) Tiger strip costume

I'd have to agree with most on here that I'd buy both but even though the tiger stripe is what I remember growing up the ASX would be more current and the one I bought first if given the choice since we have had the tiger stripe in XMO.

If i bought the line i'd go for the tiger stripe, axm is nice but just doesn't compare to the old school look.

I'm throwing my vote in for the Astonishing look. I also want to see the tiger stripe look, but Astonishing X-Men is just that cool that it comes out on top for me.

To tough, the yellow one was a pivotal part of my childhood but the Astonishing costume is so nice. I'd say Astonishing since we technically already got a tiger Wolverine.

Hmm, ya know that DOES work for Hasbro, as it gives them an excuse to pop out a repaint in X-Force colors. They have made a few figures based on the Astonishing X-Men design, and judging by the sculpt, it's cool that they know the differences between the initial ASX costume, and the refinements made later on:
    • Marvel Legends wave 12(initial Astonishing X-Men costume, no panels)
    • SuperHero Squad(has the refined panel lines on the gloves/boots and panels
    • XMO Wolverine deluxe w/Colossus(has panels)
When the Gigantic Battles Sentinel w/Wolverine was 1st rumored, my 1st thought was "YES this might be the Astonishing X-Men/modernized Wolverine for Marvel Universe!". It was either that or a Classic Sentinel pairing with tiger stripe Wolverine.

I grew up with the tiger stripe wolverine, since we already have the jim lee jean grey, and a nightcrawler, colossus, archangel coming, it will make the jim lee xmen group look more complete, it will also look better if they release a Gambit or jim lee cyclops. Hasbro haven't even made any astonishing versions yet, why would you throw astonishing wolverine with the xmen we have so far? It dosent even fit or make sense. Well, i'm only collecting the original costumes of each superhero of marvel. I won't buy astonishing versions. I can speak for other friends of mine that will agree with me, for we are old school Marvel fans. Besides, most of the people that already posted their comments said they would buy both, please release the tiger version first, then they can start releasing astonishing xmen.

I must be in the minority cuz I actually love the Wolverine Origins figure - his small stature works perfectly with the MU figures opposed to the hulking MU wolverines.

If they did do one it would have to be the Astonishing x-men outfit as we only had that in UNMASKED form in the WO line

  18. Johnnyakiba's Avatar Johnnyakiba says

    02-01-2010, 09:43 AM

I would love both but I think they need to re-do the body they have now.

I like that wolvie has open hands to hold weapons but it looks horrid when you have him stabbing badguys. I also don't care for his physique. Most of the Marvel characters are buff but they over do it with the figures.

Well its much of a muchness really, I mean they are very similar. I'd prefer the current Astonishing costume because the X-Men origins figures fit the bill for both his 'Tiger Stripe' and brown/orange costumes, and I'm trying to pull together a collection of the current New Avengers team.

I'd like to see the astonishing/civil war wolverine already.

Tiger stripe is good enough in XMO, but we only got the unmasked version of the civil war/astonishing outfit.

His small stature is cool but I don't like the plastic quality, and his elbows are some what restricted in movement. I prefer the way the MU Wolverine feels in comparison, plastic is more rigid, sculpt looks more detailed, plastic doesn't feel as cheap, the only bad thing is that he is too tall.

Well to be honest it got its start in the 70s.....Jim Lee brought it back for XMen number 1....Joe Cockrum and John Byrne drew him in it and he began his first appearance with the Xmen in it.

I have the WO one which looks better compared to the MU one (Shorter). Id rather have a short AXM Wolverine.....

I already got my iconic Wolverine twice in brown costume. I know these two costumes in the poll will be coming to MU eventually, but I'm not looking forward to them unless they shrink Wolverine down to size and fix his neck. I'll stick to the MU's and XMO I've already got, though I will buy and Sentinel w/wolvy Gigantic Battle if its ever made.

I'd still like to see a re-done Tiger Stripe, especially since I skipped the XMO version for that very reason. I'll gladly take an AXM version in MU as well, as long as both fix the height/scale issue. But Tiger Stripe first, please. First, classic costume; second, modern; third, whatever other redecos that can be made from the mold.

Of course, I'd really like to see him in his debut costume since it hardly ever gets done. Or even the Days of Futures Past version (with Sentinel, natch).
