Marvel Universe Fury Files 2009 Assortment Breakdown

Posted on December 10, 2008 at 9:11 pm by DESTRO under Marvel Toy News

With the help of ToyFare 138 we now have confirmed information on Marvel Universe 2009 Assortments. When Jerry Jivoin, Senior Brand Manager for Marvel, laid out the list for the first 4 Waves.

“The goal with Universe is to go as broad and as deep as possible. Getting the obscure characters into the mix is part of the fun. Nothing is off the table.”

Why only 3 in wave 4? Are those slots to be filled with Thor, Colossus, and the other guy I'm forgetting?

Most likely. You're forgetting two, Blade and Hobgoblin.

By the way Destro, Wave 2's Cap is 'Ultimate Captain America'.

There's also a variant of Classic Iron Man in Wave 3.

It's the Winged Mask and the Bolted Mask.

Shown here as 'Red And Gold' and 'Bolted Face Mask'.

Geez, my eyes just about popped out of my head because I read the title as Marvel 2099 figs. I thought weird bringing out a line of figures for a failed comic universe now.

Not a problem. I've just been keeping tabs on the line for a while.

But yeah, you can tell by the ammo belt and lack of headwings on Cap.

Really looking forward to 1st Appearance Ms. Marvel especially.

Looks like Hasbro is referring to the 'Winged Mask' as the 'Old School Mask'. So it probably should be 'Old School Mask' and 'Bolted Facemask'.

After reading the "Universal Appeal" in Toy Fare 138 I kind of feel a little let down by the designs and the character selection. I understand they are stepping into new uncharted waters with a 3 3/4 line but it looks like there is going to me a massive learning curve.

There are figures that I think look perfect like "The Thing" and others, both versions of "The Punisher" that hurt my eyes when I look at them.

This is just my break-down of this new information.

Union Jack - Nothing against the character but the Images shown in Toy Fair are awful. They could have used the FireFly 25th mold, kept almost all of the web gear and weapons and did the same paint job and it would have looked 100x better. No new tool cost and much better on the eyes. I hope this body mold goes into retirement real fast. It was already played out in Wave 1.

    Nick Fury FTW
! This may over take Silver Surfer as my favorite figure from the line. Web gear and Weapons look on-point.

    Moon Knight
    - Uses the X-Force Wolverine Mold with a new head that looks great. But then they went ahead and used a molded cape! The first thing that came to mind is the cape they used for the Storm Shadow Comic 2-PK that is 100% identical and is made of cloth that will not hamper the articulation of the figure. Fans of 3 3/4 are going to want way better construction then what the 6 inch stuff got. Molded capes are lame in 3 3/4 scale.

The Thing - Pretty much nailed it and a good example of just how detailed this scale can be. Also a fan favorite figure.

Bolted Facemask Iron Man - From what I could see it looks on-point. I'm a fan of Iron-Man so I can handle as many as they throw at us. Lets hope they do an interchangeable armor series.

Both Punishers - Epic Fail. Same weapons that don't fit the scale and he has clown hands. One of them looks like it belongs to an alien toy (Over Sized Long Fingers). Both head sculpts are ulgy, I guess he looked this way in the comics at one point but I have no connection to these at all.

Hand Ninja - Don't even know what the hell a Hand Ninja is but from the small pic they showed he looks ok. Again no connection to this character at all.

Ms. Marvel - The figure looks nice from what you can see in the pics....However I have never read anything with Ms. Marvel in it that I can remember. Don't care about this character and have no connection with it. We also get 2 of these, with that said I will buy both of them for 1 reason, I want more female characters in this line and if they sit on the pegs we won't get them. There are 30-40 other female characters that should have been done first. Why Ms. Marvel?

I will update my fanboy rant as i go..................

Actually, I'm incredibly happy with molded capes.

Soft goods capes at this scale suck. The material is always too bulky.

It's been a long running issue with Star Wars.

I guess the Joe team has better skills when it comes to the cloth but Molded Capes take the Action out of the Figure.

The image below is the Storm Shadow I was talking about.

I don't like the look of Storm Shadow's cape there. Never liked soft goods.

Plus Moon Knight's cape requires a specific look for the hood.

I guess they could go with a plastic hood and then soft goods cape.

But I'm happier with the molded cape. It just looks better.

The problem I find is that the sewn seams are *way* too large to be believable in scale, plus there's usually a fold-over of the cloth to make that seam which just doubles the problem. They need to use semi-plastic fabrics that auto-seal the seam when cut with a heated blade (like Rorschach did for his mask) or the FrayCheck seam 'glue' that doesn't require sewing. Do that with a thin enough fabric (unlike the wooly fabric that's about a whole millimeter thick, which is about 3 inches thick in 18th scale) and it's all good. I like to hope I've become pretty good with fabric capes and such the past couple of years:

Hand Ninjas are the first army builders of this line.
Hand - Marvel Universe: The definitive online source for Marvel super hero bios.
I think it fitting for Ms. Marvel to be the first female figure of this line.
Ms. Marvel (Carol Danvers) - Marvel Universe: The definitive online source for Marvel super hero bios.
Ms. Marvel - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
I really dislike Hulk's head. I think he looks worse than Punisher.
The MU Punisher is by far better than the Showdown version.
Destro do you happen to have any Showdown figures? It would be interesting to see side by side comparison pics in the reviews.

That's what this SS has The Plastic Hood with soft over top. I wish I had better pics of this figure, not that I'm trying to change your mind but this figure looks nicer then the image shown. To each his own and you have already won because its getting made.

There are a ton of new collectors coming into this line like me that want different things out of it then the Core 6" Guys. The character selection is not at all what I expected so far and I hope some of these selections don't clog the pegs. There are no BAF parts to save some of these obscure choices for the first 4 waves.

I hope the Marvel Team has been surfing the other outsider boards for fan want lists and design input. I really do not want a reduced sized 6" style line. I would much rather have a Modern Telling of an old story just like they did with Joes. So far its a huge mix that really has massive potential to be a top 3 brand at Hasbro.

Bring on the full X-Men and X-Force Teams! Avengers and Full Cast Spider-Man and Friends.

The last part of my FanBoy rant needs to tap the Weapons and Gear shortage. Every one of these figure should have one of those energy blast accessory's if the character has the ability to produce one.

I would rather have web gear and not painted on detail. A good balance is nice to have with the 3 3/4 scale.

    Accessory's..........Weapons.....And more of the same..........

    End FanBoy Transmission.

I see where you are coming from but using the torso and arms from Firefly would actually make the figure inaccurate, Union Jack's costume lacks the lined texture found on Firefly's 25th anniversary figure. The gear and weaponry he comes with are accurate as well, but the area between the neck and head is too long! It threw me off, other than that I will be buying him, I LOVED the miniseries from two years ago.

Agreed, and the head sculpt suffers as well. I hope he comes with more weapons, I love his book too!

The one from wave 3 is his current look. Either way the head is still too big.

The Hand Ninja Clan trained Elektra and every now and then Daredevil fights them. This is a great troop builder and I can already tell that these will be used by some joe fans as high ranking

    Red Ninjas
. The head sculpt can also be used for a custom DDP Storm Shadow from the solo series/WWIII storyline, as it looks EXACTLY the same only in white/black!
    Quote:
I would much rather have a Modern Telling of an old story just like they did with Joes.
Judging by the character selection for upcoming waves, I think what Hasbro is trying to do, is make figures of characters who show up in the current and next big storylines, in their current costumes, and then adding in classic versions of them as the line progresses, we are seeing it start with the first 4 waves, I honestly was not expecting to see a classic Iron man that quick, same goes for Punisher.

This toy series ties directly into the current comic book storylines. The end of Secret Invasion ties directly into Dark Reign. I think the New Captain America will be part of the New Avengers as he is on the cover for an upcoming issue which is hyped for having the first new roster change in a long while. There is a group now called Dark Avengers, which is like the bad version of the New Avengers. They have members who look like their New Avengers counterparts, such as Iron Patriot. Brian Michael Bendis wants to see a toy of Iron Patriot with a flip up visor. His identity must be a shocking revelation in the comics. Bendis also wants to see a 7 figure set with a BAF Dr. Doom. I wonder if Doom dons huge armor of some sort, otherwise I can't see why Bendis would want a BAF of him. The Wolverine look alike is Daken, look closely at the claws. Now the person in the Black Spiderman/Venom costume, I have no clue who that is, maybe Carnage?

Anyways since all of these characters are involved in the next storylines, I would not be surprised if they end up in the Marvel Universe toyline. That would rule. I hope we see a Winter Soldier and New Captain America figure early next year!

Ms. Marvel is also the reason Rogue got such amped up powers like super endurance and strength, as well as the ability to fly. Originally, Rogue had the same powers as her movie counterpart, until she tried to drain Carol. It went so far that Rogue not only drained her of all powers, but also absorbed Carol's memories as well which drove Rogue insane and gave Carol severe amnesia. Both conditions were temporary and have since been resolved, though I think there is still some animosity between the two, even today.
