Toynami Robotech MPC Beta Fighter In-hand Images!

Posted on December 3, 2008 at 12:52 am by Shin Densetsu under Robotech Toy News

New in-hand images of Toynami’s long awaited MPC Beta Fighter have surfaced! After years of waiting, fans will finally be able to dock their Alpha Fighter MPC toys with their larger counterparts. This is the one of only three toys made of the Beta Fighter. The first was made by Gakken/Lansay, in very limited quantities, back in the 1980’s. The second was made from CMs corp earlier this year, and is not widely available outside of Japan. These two releases were sold under the Genesis Climber Mospeada banner as the Tread(the CMs version has only been sold as part of a set with it’s smaller Legioss counterpart). This toy will probably be sold by Aoshima in Japan, in Mospeada packaging, as part of Aoshima’s 1/48 Mospeada Action Model line. The Beta Fighter is a welcome addition to both Toynami’s masterpiece collection, and the fans of the Beta Fighter who never means to obtain one domestically, until now.

Toynami's long awaited MPC Beta Fighter should be arriving shortly to the states, before christmas. Quite possibly the most anticipated release for the MPC collection, fans have waited years for a Beta Fighter toy in general, as Mospeada is often neglected by many companies. This is the very first Beta Fighter toy that will be domestically available. Just in time for the holidays, this is also the biggest MPC toy to date.

It doesnt mean anything if my one and only Alpha Fighter is broken .

I have a green Alpha of theirs that has actually survived rather well- might be interested in this thing if I find it for cheap sometime.

I wish I could be excited for this toy, but my experiences with one Toynami Alpha and one Aoshima Legioss have left me with pretty much zero interest or hope for the Beta. I'm also pretty happy with the CMs set, so I don't really need a Beta/Tlead in my collection anyway.

Glad to see this is finally a reality though, and I hope it holds up well for the people who get one. It's just a shame Toynami didn't remake the Alpha without the diecast and reissue it alongside this Beta.

Mine has a shoulder pin that was not inserted all the way in the factory, so I guess mine can be said to be broken too, as since the pin is not all the way in, the entire arm falls off. As a bandaid, I shoved one of the twisty ties from packaging for a Transformer that I bought, into the spot. The arm stays on but the hinge is significantly looser.

Same here. Truly the first domestic release of a Beta fighter, and one that isn't very limited at that. I hope the quality is very high as well as the durability. Durability actually wasn't a concern for me at all with the VF-1 MPCs(which I actually liked), but on the Alphas you had to be very careful with certain areas such as the arms.

I have a green Alpha so I'll be waiting for the green colored Beta.

I've heard the horror stories regarding the Alphas so I never transformed it. Which is just as well since I like it in armo-fighter mode anyways. It really a darn shame regarding the issues since the sculpt is pretty good. Better than CMs toy IMHO.

I sure hope the Beta to Alpha connection system is better than the CMs effort. I could've forgiven CMs exagerrated sculpt if the connection system was better.

Same here. If you are able to grab the combined toy from any angle and swoosh it around the house, it beats the CM in combined mode.

Oh MY GOD!! I can't wait to have this in my hands!!!! Best $140 I have spent this year. I hear it actually WORKS unlike the CMs model... which is a plus.

It depends on which area you compare it to. The connection on the Toynami version is already winning fans over. However the Legioss(Alpha Fighter) for CMs is a better toy than the Toynami Alpha. Will the Toynami Beta trump the CMs completely?? That has yet to be seen, so far it is superior in one area.

Things that look good: It looks nice and bulky, and hopefully that connection boom functions a sight better than the CM's version. Also, the chest missile doors open all the way, so unlike the CM's version it wont be blowing up its own chest when it fires a volley. The backpack sensor array (is that what that is? I honestly don't know) folds away completely in fighter mode.

Things that make me go "GAH": The big, bulbous fighter cockpit doesn't go anywhere, it just folds down and looks silly. I love the head-hiding mechanism on the CM's version. The lack of a concealment mechanism on the MP version makes me a sad panda.

Now the big question: Will they be reissuing the MP Alphas, hopefully with a better eye on QC and some massive redesigns? Hmm... <consults magic 8 ball>

Doubt it, the Maya Sterling version on our frontpage doesn't have any of the actual improvements that the Aoshimas had(aside from the questionable qc, the improvements I speak of include the attachable missles, ratcheting hips, and other areas).

From what I have studied on the red one that I have and pics from online reviews, I'd have to say no. Maybe a little stiffer but that is about it.

The Aoshimas only added ratcheting joints to the hips, as far as joints go. The shoulders and elbows were unchanged, leading to inevitable floppylimbs.

The shoulders should have been ratcheted, and the elbows/bicep swivels constructed of POM at least, the way they are designed to transform, the bicep swivel area is put under a lot of strain and the plastic feels like it might even be PVC! PVC is not a good material to make a piece that will be put under much strain.

Oh man! I got my BETA FIGHTER in a few days ago and all I can say is... AMAZING! It is FAR better than the Alpha fighter in every way. It is on par with the old "chunky monkey" Valk's of days of old. It is HUGE and is a very menacing sight on the shelf even next to the big SOC's.

    Well done Aoshima, well done!

I received mine as a Christmas gift from my wife. It is a spectacular piece, as I'm sure you all know. My only complaint is that the connector bar that allows you to add the Alpha Fighter in fighter mode is missing. I contacted RT.com by email twice, and by phone, and have yet to get a responce other than that I can ship it back to them at my expense for a replacement Beta. The fighter is great, the customer service is terrible. After the hundred of dollars I've spent with them, they have been unwilling or unable to send me the piece that is missing. I'll not be buying anything from them again.

Hey man you might want to try emailing Toynami too.

I've heard that the only flaw on the toy is that the hips are kind of loose due to the weight of the diecast in the lower legs. Other than that, I've heard it is quite awesome. I love being able to hear an audible click whenever a ratchet goes to work. In Beast Wars it was said that "diecast" was a lost art. Years later and with more diecast releases emerging, I think that ratchets are a lost art.

I'll be getting mine shortly but my biggest complaint about them is the lack of detail. Not that the alpha had much to it either but the lack of detail on such a large toy is disappointing.

I emailed one of the Captains over at the Robotec.com boards, and he got me in touch with a person, who requested to remain nameless, who is seeing about helping me out. I'll update when it's all finished.
