Square Enix has been on a tear with the Play Arts Kai Variants this year. They’ve expanded the DC offerings to include a very full Justice League roster, done a full round of Batman alternate takes, launched Star Wars with a fury, and now they are attacking Marvel. The PAK Variants are just that – non-screen/comic-accurate takes on the classic characters, just meant to be a cool alternate version from Square’s artistic eye. Marvel launched with Iron Man, but we decided to wait for Spider-Man. When they showed him off back at Toy Fair 2015, we were hyped. He is finally out in both Japan and at US retailers importing them so we are going to take a look after the break courtesy of site sponsor Entertainment Earth!

Star Wars Play Arts Kai figures started dropping back in June and it’s been a furious release schedule since, one a month leading up to today’s look at Darth Maul. These are alternate takes on classic Star Wars characters, merging the unique design styling of Square Enix with recognizable elements from the originals.
On quick glance, Darth Maul looks like any Darth Maul, but when you dig in changes in the robes and legs give off a more “future tech” vibe. The heads are pretty similar to classic Maul, and the lightsaber is also standard fare with a double or combined dual saber setup. We’ve run him through the motions so check out over 40 shots of him in action after the break courtesy of Big Bad Toy Store!

SQUARE ENIX’S 2015 NEW YORK COMIC CON EXCLUSIVE!
A symbolic letter “A” emblazoned on his chest, mechanical armor, army fatigues – this figure shows off a wide range of different realistic textures. During sculpting we paid special attention to keeping a sharp silhouette all around. His helmet, that looks very similar to that of the BATMAN, has a translucent visor. There are two interchangeable helmet pieces: one to recreate his default appearance, and a second one painted so as to give off a glowing eye effect. Other accessories include: a sniper rifle, two handguns, and three interchangeable hands to allow for a variety of action poses.
In this New York Comic Con 2015 Exclusive limited color version, we have highlighted the fine details with metallic paintwork in bright blue and burnished silver.
Figure includes display stand.

Square Enix has sent out photos and info for their upcoming Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain – The Third Child “Tretij Rebenok” Play Arts Kai Figure. The name clears up speculation and we now know that this is a character similar to Psycho Mantis, but is not “Kid Mantis“, as many had assumed. The figure comes in a straight jacket, wearing a gas mask. The only accessory listed is the figure stand. Details from SE:
Clad in a gas mask and an ill-fitting black straitjacket, here’s Enix’s Play Arts Kai version of Tretij Rebenok, the 3rd Child from “Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain.” WIth the sleeves hanging down dismally and with bare feet, the 3rd Child projects a feeling of eeriness and mystery.
The Third Child Play Arts Kai Figure is scheduled for release in November. It’s listed at 9,800 Yen (about $79 USD). Toyark sponsor HobbyLink Japan has the pre-order for $67 plus shipping.
