godsandmonsters

Yesterday we got a look at DC’s Justice League Gods and Monsters with a video showing off the trailer, announcement of a companion comic book series, and first glimpses at the action figures from DC Collectibles.  We now have additional high resolution images of the figures from DCC featuring Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman in the alternate universe costumes.  As we thought yesterday, these 6 inch figures are definitely taking on design cues and articulation from the Batman Animated series figures rather than the 7 inch less articulated versions.  Check them out after the break!

DC Entertainment rolled out new info on their upcoming Gods and Monsters direct to video animated film today, showing off an alternate universe version of Batman, Wonder Woman, and Superman.  In the below video, animation lord Bruce Timm explains the process and reasoning behind the new adventure, which will also include a daily digital only comic explaining the backstory of these new versions of the heroes.

Near the end, we get our first glimpse at action figures from DC Collectibles which are said to be 6 inch, and seem to have some articulation similar to the recent Batman Animated figures as opposed to the larger but less articulated offerings we’ve been getting for the animated films so far.  Check out the video below and screen caps after the break!

Animated Joker 14

The Toyark’s Wave 2 Batman Animated Galleries wrap up (for now) with none other than The Joker! The iconic, demonic trickster is shown off in his traditional Batman The Animated Series purple suit, white face, red lips, and black/green hair. He comes with episode specific accessories including a gas mask like dome, pick, comb, necklace and telescope, not to mention 3 pairs of interchangeable hands. Does the animated look hold up after all these years since we’ve seen The Joker get more menacing and evil in the movies and books? Find out after the break courtesy of site sponsor Big Bad Toy Store!

Designers Series Dodson Starfire Concept

It’s been a fairly uneventful news day, so it seems like a good time to share this cool feature from DC Collectibles. They take a look at three different figures from their DC Designer Series, and talk about the challenges in creating those figures. They look at the concept and artwork, the original clay sculpt and then the final figure. It’s a pretty fun read, and it’s always cool to see the whole process laid out by companies. Here’s a snippet:

It’s one of our more exciting, original lines, but it’s not without its challenges. Nailing down the artist’s very particular style can be difficult. Especially since we’re talking about a style developed for 2D, hand drawn art, not for 3D sculpture.

In these illustrations, you can see some of our sculptors working though a number of issues, particularly in the head sculpt as they try to capture the unique traits of three of our most popular artists.

Articulation is limited in this line, as adding too much would compromise the look of the character. (Though we try to add as many articulation points as possible!) You also may have noticed that paint application is key, as well. All three artists use unique coloring schemes in the comics, so when painting our action figures, a lot of technique and thought comes into play.

Animated Robin 32

The Toyark’s Wave 2 Batman Animated galleries continue today with Robin! This is the Dick Grayson Batman The Animated Series (BTAS) version, featuring a teen/late teen build that will eventually graduate into Nightwing in The New Batman Adventures (TNBA) later on. He comes with a wide array of extra hands, grappling launchers, a whip, display stand, and two capes. And yes, QC issues seen in wave one are addressed here. Check out over 30 shots and our thoughts after the break, courtesy of site sponsor Big Bad Toy Store!

Animated Man Bat 16

DC Collectibles launched an all new line of 6 inch Batman The Animated Series figures last year. The line initially had some QC issues but aside from that they were well received, finally giving the fans high end versions of these characters truly representative of the now classic cartoon series. The line continues this month with the next wave of figures – Man Bat (BTAS), Robin (BTAS) and Joker (BTAS). Poison Ivy was supposed to ship with these guys but has been delayed. We are starting off our galleries with Man Bat, check him out along with some quick thoughts after the break courtesy of site sponsor Big Bad Toy Store!

DCC Icon Breakdown

DC Collectibles has posted a new article. It details the type of articulation you can expect from their much anticipated DC Comics Icons Figures. The figures look to have well over 30 points of articulation. The diagram uses their upcoming Batman figure to detail each pivot and ball joint. Highlights include ab crunch, double joints at the knees and elbows, hinges at the wrists, and swivels on the biceps and shins. Look for the figures to be released in November. You can see our pictures of the figures from our DC Collectibles Toy Fair Coverage.
