In the 1994 film Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, the aquatic mascot from the Miami Dolphins is stolen from their stadium. They call in an eccentric “Pet Detective” named Ace Ventura to investigate the disappearance of the beloved dolphin. As the investigation goes on, all signs point to disgraced former Dolphins punter Ray Finkle as the culprit. Looking to find clues to Finkle’s motives and whereabouts, Ace goes undercover as an incoming patient to Shady Acres. While there, he finds out that police lieutenant Lois Einhorn is somehow involved.
A new figure is now available from NECA from the classic comedy. The Shady Acres Ace Ventura 8″ Scale Clothed Figure includes two new head sculpts, a business card, and Wiggles the dog as an accessory. Our friends at NECA have sent over the figure to check out. Read on for our gallery and impressions of the new figure.
Ace Ventura: Pet Detective – Shady Acres Ace Ventura 8″ Scale Clothed Figure by NECA
Pros
- Improved head sculpts over the first Ace Ventura release
- Solid paint work
Cons
- The bare arms look too bulky for the character
Overall
The Shady Acres Ace Figure comes packed in a collector friendly window box. Ace includes a tailored fabric outfit, two portraits, a Wiggles the dog accessory, and a business card.
For the most part, this is a pretty basic figure release. The main draw, for fans of the character, is going to be the improved head sculpts compared to their first Ace Ventura release. While not a spot on likeness, they are definitely on the right track, especially on the “surprised” head sculpt. Paint work is mostly clean, and there were no bleeding or misaligned paint applications. The two portraits swap out easily, as I didn’t need to heat them up to remove or pop onto the ball joint. The figure, I believe, uses the 3.0 retro body from NECA. It offers some decent articulation, but anywhere the body is exposed doesn’t quite work. The pins in the arms are pretty large, and the arms are much more muscular than Jim Carrey would have been at the time. The outfit, on the other hand, works really well. It’s not too bulky, and falls pretty naturally over the figures body. The dog is a fun looking accessory.
If you’re a fan of the movie, and looking for an Ace Ventura to add to your Mego style collection, then this is a solid pick up. It’s not for everyone for sure. However, in my opinion, it’s a marked improvement over the first Ace release. Check out a selection of images below. After that, you can see all of the photos.
