The original Friday The 13th had one of the great swerves of early 80’s slashers, as it’s revealed that Pamela Voorhees is committing the murders at Camp Crystal Lake as revenge for her son’s supposed drowning years earlier. In the second film, it is revealed that not only is Jason Voorhees alive, but that he likely witnessed the murder of his mother and now seeks revenge on anyone foolish enough to intrude on Crystal Lake. While this was our true introduction to Jason, he wouldn’t get his trademark look until Part 3. Here, the filmmakers pulled inspiration from another slasher film; The Town That Dreaded Sundown. Jason is severely deformed and covers his face with a burlap sack, which has a single eye hole cut out.
NECA had two prior releases of a Part 2 Jason Voorhees in their 7″ scale line up. The first was a release in their Cult Classics Hall of Fame series in 2006, while the other was an amazing set featuring Jason, his Mother and the shrine alter in a diorama set. That was released in 2005 I believe. Their newest take on the figure features an all-new body sculpt to match their modern articulation style! With this release, you get masked and unmasked heads, a severed Pamela Voorhees head sculpt, a campfire, and an assortment of weapons. The figure is available in stores now. Toyark sponsor Entertainment Earth sent the figure along for us to check out. See my photo shoot and thoughts on the figure by reading on.

Overall
This release of Jason Voorhees is packaged in the standard flapped window box that NECA uses for their Ultimate figures. The front of the box features the classic Friday The 13th Part 2 poster. The back of the box showcases a few photos of Jason and his accessories. Inside, Jason sits in a plastic tray along with is accessories. Jason includes masked and unmasked portraits, a pick axe, a machete, a knife, a spear, a pitchfork, a campfire, and a severed mummified Mrs. Voorhees head sculpt.
Jason Voorhees releases have made up some of my favorite Ultimate figures from NECA. They typically include some great weapons and one or two fun dio style accessories. I’m happy to see that the Part 2 continued that trend. The weapons selection here is nice and varied, with each used for unique kills in the film. The real prize accessory is the campfire. That not only includes the wood and stone, but a nice semi-translucent flame effect piece. The campfire is a great addition to the previously released Crystal Lake Accessory Pack. For the body sculpt, NECA went in and sculpted a new articulated body to match their current releases. The masked head sculpt looks pretty much the same as the old releases, while the unamsked head sculpt looks like a big improvement. If the unmasked portrait is using the old sculpt, then the new paint application they used here is far superior (judging by old pics of the original). There’s great details work throughout the figure, with the paint really bringing out the small textures on the clothing and the portraits.
Paint application is done well, with nice clean apps for stuff like the eyes. The heads swap out very easily, and joints on my figure were solid with no looseness or paint locking issues. Articulation is decent with an average range of motion. I’d always prefer at least double jointed elbows, but it doesn’t prevent any iconic poses here. The only real thing missing for me (aside from an axe), is a display base of some kind for Pamela’s severed head sculpt. NECA had sculpted the full shrine for an older release. While it wouldn’t be feasible to have that entire dio in a $25 package, I do wish there was at last a small part of that included, or a variation on it, to really give a good display for the head sculpt.
Regardless of that, this is absolutely a worthwhile pick up for fans of the franchise. It’s a version of Jason that is truly different compared to most theatrical iterations that followed (at least until Part 7). It’s a well done figure with some excellent accessories. Check out some highlight photos below and the full gallery after that.
Note: The Pamela Voorhees Diorama is from a previous Friday the 13th Part 2 Set from NECA Toys.
