Diamond Select Toys has many different types of products in their arsenal beyond Select and Minimates. Today we’re taking a look at one of the Gallery pieces. These are PVC statues, so significantly less heavy and expensive than a proper polystone statue. Since I am not a big statue collector, pieces like this are an easier pill to swallow when one hits the right notes. This particular Spider-Man here today was one of them. It’s got a sleek profile and classic feel that instantly stood out for me when first seeing it. We’ve done up some pics so read on and check them out along with some quick thoughts!
Diamond Select Toys Marvel Gallery Spider-Man
As I said, not a big statue guy. This piece however hit the right spot. I loved the sculpt of him balancing on a rooftop decoration with one foot, highlighting his tight flat suit. I’m cool with the modern bulk out of superhero suits generally, but I think Spidey works best with a more streamlined get up, and this highlights that perfectly. The colors and design scream 70s/80s Spider-Man which was my first interaction with him as a kid so having a representation of that on the shelf is welcome. Being 9 inches, he doesn’t quite fit anywhere in scale, so it’s more of a Spidey area highlight piece for me, sticking up and hovering over Legends, Selects and the lot.
A couple nitpicks – The right hand – not sure if this is referencing a comic panel/cover or not, but I don’t dig the open gripping state. Looks like he should be holding something. A closed fist or something similar to the left hand would have been better IMO. Washing – sloppy on my copy. The recessed webbing lines in the suit are great, but the wash to fill them in with black got all over the place. There are blobs and smudges all over the red parts of the figure. From a distance, not a big deal, but any up close inspection (or picture) and they are noticeable. I’d check the window before grabbing if possible.
Overall great piece, and happy to have it in the rotation. I’ll be keeping an eye on future Marvel Gallery items now that I know they can shine.
